Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse
Chapter 272 - 269: I Really Am Your Biological Father
Chapter 272: Chapter 269: I Really Am Your Biological Father
Chen Xing didn’t enter the waterfall directly.
Who knew what was up with this water?
She took a few stones from her backpack and tossed them into the cascade.
As electricity flickered, the waterfall lit up in a dazzling array of colors.
Electricity was completely harmless to her.
She pulled a large sun umbrella from the car’s trunk, and the two of them—her and Meng Hu—passed safely under the waterfall.
Since she had gone in first and absorbed the electricity, there was almost no charge left when Meng Hu followed.
After tossing the umbrella to the ground, Chen Xing began searching the lawn for an entrance.
The lawn was vast, and it even had a helipad.
The people here must use a helicopter to come and go.
Chen Xing had only walked halfway around when the ground in front of the waterfall’s southeastern corner opened up, revealing an entrance.
’They know I’m here?’
’Are they really being so considerate as to open the door for me?’
Chen Xing didn’t stand on ceremony. She led Meng Hu right inside.
The entrance wasn’t wide; Meng Hu barely squeezed through.
It was a long, downward-spiraling staircase, giving off the feel of a castle, but not quite so ancient.
The handrails were pristine crystal, and a massive crystal chandelier hung from the center of the ceiling, appearing to extend down several stories.
She lost track of how many floors she descended before finally reaching the bottom.
It was a circular hall with several doors set into the surrounding walls.
Chen Xing casually pulled open one of the doors.
Just by chance, she saw Cao Guangrong’s parents—the same two who had once posed as her grandparents.
The two of them were lying on a double bed, tubes inserted into their bodies, their eyes vacant.
However, they weren’t completely unconscious.
Upon seeing Chen Xing, a look of terror filled their eyes.
Chen Xing was a little curious why Cao Guangrong and his family had pretended to be her relatives.
Just curious, nothing more.
Chen Xing walked over and yanked out the tubes connected to their bodies.
This action, however, only made the elderly couple even more frightened.
The tubes were pulled out before their horrified eyes.
Within a few seconds, both of them were gasping for breath, and then they stopped breathing entirely.
Chen Xing: "..."
She had only wanted to wake them up a bit, to ask who had ordered them to get close to her.
’Who would have thought the tubes were keeping them alive?’
’You really can’t blame me for this.’
In every other Research Institute she’d been in, pulling out the tubes would always wake up the dazed subjects.
’Who knew it would be the opposite here?’
So, Chen Xing had no choice but to enter the next room.
Coincidentally, or not, Cao Guangrong and his wife, Yu Lan, were also lying on a double bed, just like the elderly couple.
These two were even more vacant than the old couple.
They showed no reaction at all when they saw Chen Xing approach.
They had even more tubes sticking out of them than the elderly couple did.
Chen Xing stared at the tubes, a little unsure if she should pull them out this time.
’Forget it!’
’I’ll go deeper and see what’s what first!’
Chen Xing opened another door and went straight through.
Inside was a corridor.
As she walked down it, she saw a lush vegetable patch on the left.
It was planted with common vegetables like eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, green beans, and cabbage.
A large spotlight hung above, bathing the garden in a warm glow.
On the right were paddy fields where the rice was already starting to turn yellow.
Chen Xing didn’t find it too strange.
After all, the outside world was no longer suitable for cultivating anything.
If they didn’t find a way to grow things underground, everyone would starve sooner or later.
Past the cultivation area, a livestock section appeared ahead.
Horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits—they were even raising bears.
It was all enclosed in glass, so the smell wasn’t strong.
Chen Xing was a little confused. Why would they let her into such an important place so easily?
As she moved past the livestock area, she suddenly heard anxious footsteps approaching from ahead.
The person seemed to be in a great hurry, occasionally breaking into a short run.
Chen Xing stopped at the edge of the livestock area.
There was only one person, and she couldn’t sense any malice, so she didn’t act overly guarded.
Before long, the footsteps on the other side of the door suddenly stopped.
It was as if they were mentally preparing themselves, or something.
After ten or so seconds, the door finally opened.
When the door opened, Chen Xing froze.
The person who came was none other than Xu Anguo, a man few people ever got to see.
He was wearing a white lab coat and a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, looking as refined and courteous as ever.
But... was that a hint of nervousness on his face now?
Chen Xing wasn’t sure if her feeling was right.
In any case, Xu Anguo seemed nervous and apprehensive, especially when their eyes met.
He even stopped breathing for a moment before rushing forward, trying to grab her hand.
Chen Xing felt a visceral revulsion and snatched her hand away.
She didn’t understand why he was suddenly acting so... intimate.
Seeing her pull away, his eyes began to redden.
After looking her up and down carefully, he murmured as if to himself, "As long as you’re okay... as long as you’re safe... as long as you’re alive..."
Chen Xing was a bit speechless.
It seemed the Research Institute had never wanted her to have an easy time.
How many people had they sent to her side alone?
Besides... she was an escapee from the Research Institute.
A fresh wave of disgust washed over Chen Xing. Just facing him was repulsive. "My being alive makes you all uncomfortable, doesn’t it?"
Xu Anguo shook his head vigorously, trying to prove he didn’t mean that. "I, that’s not what I meant... Shan—"
"Heh..." Chen Xing cut him off with a cold laugh.
’This guinea pig is still alive, so I must have some value left to their Research Institute, right?’
’Maybe they opened the door so generously today because they want to capture me again.’
Chen Xing took a step back, putting some distance between herself and Xu Anguo. "Number 00007... Heh... Does it piss you off that I’m no longer under your control?"
Xu Anguo gave a bitter smile, his eyes filled with tenderness. "How could that be, Shanshan... Why would I ever want to control you?"
Shanshan?
The moment Chen Xing heard that name, she felt a sharp pang in her heart.
Her gaze slowly lifted from the floor to Xu Anguo, her eyes filled with questions.
Xu Anguo nodded. "Your name is Shanshan. I gave it to you, hoping you would grow to be as beautiful as your name."
Chen Xing froze.
Her eyes were fixed on Xu Anguo.
She looked as if she didn’t understand at all, her eyes devoid of any warmth.
"I really am your biological father, Shanshan..." Xu Anguo didn’t know how to explain this absurd situation, the tenderness in his eyes deepening. "This is a photo of you when you were half a month old..."
As he spoke, Xu Anguo held out a faded photograph to Chen Xing. "This is also the only family photo we have!" Tears finally streamed down his cheeks, unable to be held back.
Chen Xing remained motionless for a long time.
In the end, it was Xu Anguo who had to press the photo into her hand.
Chen Xing’s hand trembled unconsciously as she held the photo. The woman in the picture bore some resemblance to Lu Bingtian, but she looked even more like Lu Yanran.
And in her arms, the woman was holding a baby.
