Chapter 255: Chapter 252: This Damned Familiar Feeling

Truthfully, Chen Xing was quite curious about this.

She had been in such a hurry after getting the jewelry that she hadn’t had time to inspect it.

It was also the method she had suddenly thought of to rescue Lu Haoran without harming the Song Family Army.

Apparently, this black vortex could change size at will.

She easily trapped the front row of Superpower Users, immobilizing them completely.

"This way!" Chen Xing whispered, beckoning to Lu Haoran and Brother Jin, who were already looking in her direction.

The two of them retracted their superpowers and ran toward Chen Xing.

Once they were out of the Song Family Army’s attack range, Chen Xing withdrew the vortex.

Even so, they couldn’t shake their pursuers.

Besides the Song Family Army, it seemed the northern boss’s Superpower Team was also in the city, preying on the wealthy.

The name of the "middle-aged tycoon"—Chen Xing’s disguise—was naturally on their list. Who could blame them, given how extravagantly she spent her money?

Chen Xing showed no such courtesy to the northern boss’s people. She killed them without hesitation.

After she fought off the northern boss’s Superpower Users, the Song Family Army caught up again.

This time, the team was led by Secretary Liu.

He wasn’t reckless; in fact, he was quite polite to Chen Xing. "Ma’am, please don’t interfere. This man, Lu Haoran, is someone our Young Master Song wants. I hope you’ll do us the favor of stepping aside."

When it came to capable people, he preferred not to fight if he could avoid it.

Who knew if they might one day be on the same side?

Besides, even though she had just helped Lu Haoran, she hadn’t harmed a single member of the Song Family Army.

But she had been absolutely ruthless toward the Superpower Users from the North, killing them without mercy.

Seeing Secretary Liu’s politeness, Chen Xing softened her stance. "My apologies, but these two are quite important to me."

She even gave him a look that conveyed her reluctance to fight them.

Chen Xing recognized most of the people in his group.

When Secretary Liu heard this, he hesitated for only a moment before turning to find another target.

Lu Haoran wasn’t on their list to begin with.

Even if they tried to take him by force, they probably wouldn’t come out on top.

Chen Xing shot a grateful glance at Secretary Liu’s retreating back, then led the injured Lu Haoran and Brother Jin out of Green City, though they didn’t go far.

They found a small, random building and ducked inside to hide.

The buildings were so dilapidated they looked as though they’d been abandoned for years. Every room was like a pigsty.

Brother Jin seemed to have changed a great deal. Finding no suitable room to rest in, he told the other two to wait and went inside to clean one up himself.

The three entered the room and sat on the wooden floor. Only then did Lu Haoran realize he had overexerted himself.

His entire body was now aching terribly.

He leaned back against the wall, his eyes filled with warmth and gratitude. "Thank you for saving me! May I ask your names?"

"Just call me Xiao Jin," Brother Jin said, his usual arrogance gone. "I only saved you because you looked a little familiar."

He had been trying to escape as well and had spotted him in the crowd.

At a single glance, he felt the man was incredibly familiar.

Before, he hadn’t cared one bit about his own memories.

But ever since meeting Chen Xing, he had wanted to recover them.

That elusive sense of familiarity made him deeply uneasy.

Lu Haoran was speechless.

It wasn’t just Lu Haoran who found Brother Jin odd; Chen Xing also thought his words were strange.

’Based on my deductions, Brother Jin must have been one of the Xingguang Research Institute’s lab rats.’

’It makes sense that he finds me familiar, since I was one of them too. We might have met before.’

’But Lu Haoran has his memories, so he shouldn’t be a lab rat from the Research Institute. Why does Brother Jin find him familiar?’

’Why?’

’A sense of familiarity like that can’t come from a mere fleeting encounter.’

’It must come from spending day after day together, right?’

She herself had experienced flashes of Lu Haoran in her mind, but she couldn’t grasp their significance.

Just then, Brother Jin turned to Chen Xing. "Ma’am, ever since I saw you at the entrance to Green City, I’ve felt you’re really familiar, too."

Chen Xing didn’t answer.

’Of course he finds me familiar.’

’I find him familiar too!’

’I just can’t believe he can still sense it, even with me disguised like this.’

Lu Haoran gave an awkward laugh, steering the conversation away from Brother Jin’s comment. "You’ve offended the Song Family. I’m afraid things won’t be easy for you from now on."

He was a little worried about the two of them.

Chen Xing wasn’t worried in the slightest. "I don’t care."

’So many people who know me haven’t recognized me. Song Yiguo won’t figure it out either.’

"I don’t care either," Brother Jin said with a nonchalant smile. "I’ve joined the rebel army."

Chen Xing was speechless. ’The rebel army?’

’The same rebel army that was a household name in her past life?’

She had only heard of them several years into the apocalypse.

’I can’t believe the rebel army was formed this early.’

’It seems they’re pretty capable, too, already operating in the northern boss’s territory.’

However, Chen Xing wasn’t interested in which faction they had joined.

"I hope you both live well," Chen Xing said sincerely.

Although Brother Jin had done plenty of bad things in the past, he hadn’t harmed her.

’And maybe, in the future, I might even need his help to recover my memories.’

As for Lu Haoran, the image that had suddenly flashed through her mind was already an incredibly important clue.

With that, Chen Xing stood up to leave.

She still had to meet with Ran Gaoyang and Ding Yiyu to get her things back.

But just as she stood up, the sound of footsteps came from outside. The glow of torches pierced the darkness, lighting up the night sky.

She walked to the window and saw that a team of people had surrounded the building.

Some held torches, illuminating the building they were in.

The moment she peeked out, a bolt of lightning shot through the window.

"It’s Yu Laosan’s men!" Lu Haoran was already on his feet.

Chen Xing turned to Lu Haoran. "Yu Laosan is the northern boss?"

Lu Haoran nodded, then looked at the other two.

His meaning was clear.

He definitely wasn’t the northern boss’s target. So, which one of them was?

"Me..." Chen Xing no longer hid the truth. "He’s interested in the one hundred head of cattle I brought. But... I’ve already had someone take them out of Green City for me. He’s barking up the wrong tree."

People were already storming the building. Chen Xing turned to Lu Haoran and Brother Jin. "They’re here for me. You two just get out of here!"

’It’ll be easier for me to escape on my own.’

As she spoke, she detected a scent in the air. It was very fragrant...

Intoxicatingly so.

’Damn it!’

The three of them collapsed to the ground simultaneously.

At that moment, a figure appeared in the doorway and walked toward them, step by step.

The man was about five-foot-three, with average looks. His hair was meticulously slicked to his scalp, giving him an air that was both prim and proper, and yet sinister and cunning.

He wore a vicious grin, his hands clasped casually behind his back as if he was completely confident in the outcome.

He walked up to the three of them, looked down, and finally ambled over to Chen Xing.

His sharp, thin jaw lifted into a slight curve as he nodded.

Chen Xing hadn’t completely lost consciousness.

Through half-lidded eyes, she watched him.

’That damned familiar feeling. This feeling is the worst. Another one... another person who feels familiar!’
