Chapter 140 - 137: Bronze Wall, Iron Rampart

Chapter 140: Chapter 137: Bronze Wall, Iron Rampart

Chen Xing was the first to notice the corpses stirring and immediately shouted, "Quick, let’s go!"

They couldn’t worry about what lay ahead; anywhere was better than their current spot.

The rising corpses were mutating rapidly. Fur sprouted from their skin at a visible rate, and they were about to turn into the same Hairy Monsters from before.

Fortunately, since they were still transforming, the Hairy Monsters hadn’t yet recovered their speed.

If they were caught between these Hairy Monsters and the forces outside, they would be at a huge disadvantage.

Realizing how dire the situation was, everyone pushed forward, heedless of what dangers might lie ahead.

They were quickly swallowed by the darkness just as the main gate was successfully opened from the outside.

But the newly arrived team was ambushed by pouncing Hairy Monsters before they could even grasp the situation.

Don’t be fooled by the Hairy Monsters’ fluffy appearance, which made them seem harmless. Whenever they encountered prey, every strand of fur on their bodies would stand on end, making them look like hedgehogs.

When the sharp quills pierced a person, they would be instantly paralyzed, their movements severely hindered.

The Hairy Monster would then seize the opportunity to slash them with its long nails, killing them within seconds.

And so, the several hundred people who had entered were wiped out. Not a single one was spared, all of them becoming temporary corpses.

Fortunately, while the base’s gate was easy to open, it also had an automatic closing mechanism.

The door slammed shut after only a small number of the monsters managed to pursue them outside.

In the narrow corridor, corpses were now piled on top of each other. Soon, they too would rise, transforming into more Hairy Monsters lying in wait for the next humans to arrive.

The mutation rate for these creatures was incredibly fast; the area outside would soon become another den of monsters.

Chen Xing witnessed all of this through a small window on the sealed iron door.

It was a good thing her curiosity had compelled her to take that extra glance.

"If we see any more monsters, we must attack from a distance!" Chen Xing’s voice wasn’t loud, but it echoed in the spacious room.

She then gave Meng Hu a command: just stay put and be good.

Vice General Du was now at the head of the group, a spotlight in his hand as he vigilantly scanned their surroundings.

They now found themselves in a vast, empty, circular hall. Straight ahead stood a massive iron gate.

It was currently sealed, but the temperature inside the hall remained extremely low.

"There’s something on the floor!" The hall was so large and everyone was so spread out that it took a while for someone to notice the bodies on the ground.

Thankfully, there weren’t too many of them, only a few dozen.

"Finish them off before they can get up!" Chen Xing warned, already searching for a body to deal with herself.

Although, it was a bit absurd to talk about "killing" them.

Song Yiguo’s men were obedient and cautious. They immediately spread out, fanning across the vast space in a thorough search to dispatch the corpses.

"We still haven’t found Peter’s body!" Song Yiguo pointed out, his observation astute.

This meant that Peter had made it past these dangers and successfully advanced further in.

It seemed the man’s power was just as formidable as the legends claimed.

"A third wave of people is coming in!" The soldier observing the situation outside reported. Though he was panicking on the inside, his face remained a mask of composure.

Upon joining the Superpower Group, they had already prepared to face death, ready to sacrifice themselves for their country and people at any moment.

"Everyone’s getting here so fast!" Song Yiguo felt they had to press deeper inside, and quickly.

Despite the number of monsters outside, there would always be skilled people who could force their way in.

Vice General Du immediately opened the large set of double iron doors ahead of them.

A flood of light instantly poured out, temporarily blinding those who had been in the darkness. One by one, they shielded their eyes.

Chen Xing had no choice but to close her eyes, avoiding the piercing glare.

Just then, she heard a whistling sound of something rushing toward her.

’Was it because I’m too close to the front?’

’Or because I’m the only woman?’

Whatever the reason, she could feel the danger was aimed squarely at her.

Just as the danger was about to reach her, Chen Xing dodged backward, her eyes snapping open at the same time.

Before her stood General Peter, his attack having missed its mark. He wore an expression of sheer disbelief, unable to accept that he had failed.

But in a flash, realizing he had missed the perfect opportunity for a kill, he spun around. A long blade extended from his arm, and he swung it toward Song Yiguo.

His superpower was somewhat of a double-edged sword; it offered no ranged attacks and was only useful for close-quarters combat.

However, his superpower was extremely precise, and combined with his swift movements, almost no one could dodge his attacks.

’Besides, these people still can’t adjust to the sudden brightness. They’re completely blind, aren’t they?’

Just as the blade reached Song Yiguo, a gunshot rang out. It was followed by a sharp CLANG as Peter’s arm was knocked aside, causing his slash to go wide.

Stunned, Peter looked at the pistol in Chen Xing’s hand, and his anger flared.

’If my body weren’t like a fortress of steel, that shot would have probably pierced right through,’ he thought.

Hearing the gunshot, everyone around Chen Xing struggled to adjust to the bright light.

Song Yiguo saw Peter retracting the blade just inches from his face. Cold sweat trickled down his forehead.

Ignoring everyone else, Peter charged straight for Chen Xing.

He wasn’t afraid in the slightest. ’After all, my body is like a fortress of steel.’

’Even with Song Yiguo’s numbers, the most they can do is hit me a few more times.’

Chen Xing understood now. The man’s superpower was the ’fortress of steel’ type, and an upgraded version at that.

She had seen upgraded Superpower Users who could grow long blades from their arms before.

And they truly did grow, because even if you broke them off, they would just grow back, like cutting chives.

It was like he had a cheat ability; ordinary people couldn’t harm him at all.

No wonder he survived.

The crowd made it difficult for Chen Xing to evade. "Everyone, back up! Give me some room!"

Vice General Du led the others in a retreat toward the perimeter, instantly creating an open area.

They had tried attacking Peter with blades and guns, but it was useless. Their only choice was to entrust him to Chen Xing.

Chen Xing didn’t engage him head-on, instead hopping from one spot to another.

She even found a moment to reach into her backpack.

Seeing her toying with him, an enraged General Peter extended his blade further and put even more force into his swings.

But just as he closed in on Chen Xing, she smashed a can of soybean oil on him. A sticky, greasy liquid streamed down from the top of his head.

"Idiot, you think making me lose my footing is enough to beat me?" Peter, relying on his invulnerable body, paid Chen Xing no mind.

The only reason he had attacked her first was that she was the first person he had spotted.

A slight smile curved Chen Xing’s lips as she shouted to the Superpower Users, "All Fire Ability users, light him up!"

Peter: "..."

Before he could react, several jets of flame shot toward him at once, instantly engulfing him.

"Aaaargh..." His miserable screams grew weaker and weaker.

General Peter could never have imagined that his superpower, which made him fear neither heaven nor earth, would be defeated by a can of kitchen-grade soybean oil.

Chen Xing looked at Song Yiguo, her gaze perfectly clear.

She had saved his life. It was time for him to return the favor.

Song Yiguo nodded, understanding completely.

At that moment, Vice General Du, who had been the first to enter the lit area, shouted, "There should be more Hairy Monsters here!"

The floor was densely covered with bodies, and some were already starting to twitch.
