Chapter 139 - 136: Seed Base
Chapter 139: Chapter 136: Seed Base
The food last night had been so good, he was still thinking about it this morning.
Chen Xing: "..."
’She wasn’t his personal chef!’
"It’ll cost you a premium!" Chen Xing said bluntly.
Since Song Yiguo was being so shameless, she might as well demand an exorbitant price.
Song Yiguo didn’t care in the slightest. "Fine!"
Out of consideration for Vice General Du’s hard work, Chen Xing also brought a portion for him, as well as for the Three Wang Brothers at the door.
After a taste of Chen Xing’s cooking, they were all completely won over.
It was just too delicious!
After the meal, they set off.
The Royal Palace was in chaos. They could barely fend for themselves, so who would notice anyone leaving?
Forget Song Yiguo and his group; the entire hotel was empty by noon.
So many people had died in just two days. The place was too unlucky; it was safer to leave early.
Song Yiguo’s plane changed course, heading for the World Seed Bank on a small island in Baling Country.
This small island was located in the Arctic Ocean, within the Arctic Circle. Over sixty percent of its land was covered by glaciers, making most of it uninhabitable.
Its most populated area had only held three thousand people, but more than half had died since the apocalypse. Thankfully, the outbreak was contained in time. Before the apocalypse, polar bears had already outnumbered humans; now, the disparity was even greater.
They arrived on the island at noon, but the temperature was seventeen degrees below zero.
The group was thinly dressed; only Chen Xing had put on a down jacket.
She had no intention of letting herself freeze.
After all, she was the one with the foresight to lug around a huge backpack.
Now, Song Yiguo and the others were green with envy.
’Why didn’t we think to bring an extra bag?’
They could only rely on sheer grit to endure the frigid wind.
However, the landing site wasn’t too far from the seed bank—only about a dozen kilometers away.
They drove toward their destination.
As they were battling the cold wind, the sky decided not to cooperate, and snowflakes began to fall.
It’s often said that the temperature doesn’t feel as cold when it’s snowing, but that’s only when you’re in the north and dressed warmly enough.
Try doing that in thin clothes.
Chen Xing couldn’t feel their chill, nestled contentedly in her down jacket.
The wind was blowing so hard they could barely see the road, forcing them to slow down. "Looks like a blizzard’s coming!"
Just as everyone’s vision was becoming increasingly blurry, Chen Xing spotted a small, two-story building ahead.
From the side, it looked like a triangular structure, as if it extended directly out of the snow.
The front had a rectangular iron door for entry and exit.
The group managed to reach their destination just before the blizzard hit.
Perhaps because it had been unmanned for years, there were no guards at the entrance.
"No one knows what’s inside, so stay on high alert!" Song Yiguo warned. "The intel we gathered said this seed bank didn’t have many guards."
But this was the apocalypse; there were bound to be plenty of people after this place.
It was always better to be cautious.
"Open the door!" Song Yiguo ordered once everyone was ready.
A specialist immediately walked toward the main door.
But before he could even start on the lock, they heard Chen Xing say, "Someone’s coming!"
They were still far away, but Chen Xing could hear the sound of cars.
Everyone: "..." They couldn’t see a thing!
"Let’s find cover and hide first!" Song Yiguo had complete trust in Chen Xing.
She always sensed danger earlier than ordinary people.
Just a few minutes later, after Song Yiguo’s team had all hidden themselves in the deep snowdrifts behind the building, several vehicles pulled up in front of the seed bank.
Song Yiguo’s own vehicles were still parked in the snow.
A group of people got out, shivering one by one.
Just like Song Yiguo’s group, the newcomers were also thinly dressed. Standing in the swirling snow, their lips were turning purple from the cold.
"Just as I thought, someone beat us here. Everyone, be careful from now on! You, open the door!" The speaker was a Western man in his early thirties, nearly two meters tall, with a high-bridged nose and deep-set eyes. He stood ramrod straight in the blizzard, as if the frigid wind couldn’t touch him at all.
Chen Xing had a vague impression of him. At old man Baya’s wedding, he had been sitting in the second row.
At that moment, she was standing right in the blizzard, watching them directly.
But with visibility at less than ten meters, the other party couldn’t see her at all.
Soon, this new group opened the door and entered the seed bank.
When Song Yiguo and the others emerged from the snow, they looked as if they’d been dusted with white flour.
Some of the less physically fit couldn’t help but tremble.
"It’s General Peter from the Roman Country!" Song Yiguo announced the identity of the person who had entered the base while brushing the snow off himself. "If I’m not mistaken, everyone who came to Baling this time is after this seed bank!"
The Roman Country was one of the world’s three major powers; their strength was not to be underestimated.
The Great Commander hadn’t come, which meant he must have complete faith in his general.
"Do we enter the seed bank now, or wait?" Vice General Du asked, looking at his men who were all shivering uncontrollably. He couldn’t bear to watch.
The situation had been urgent, so they’d hidden in the snow. If they stayed hidden any longer, their bodies wouldn’t be able to take it.
More teams were sure to arrive soon. They couldn’t just keep hiding like this.
"Open the door!" Song Yiguo made his decision.
’Better to go in sooner rather than later.’
’We’ll deal with the people inside before the next group arrives.’
’And if we can’t get away in time, we’ll take out each team as they come.’
The group entered through the large iron gate. In the hundred-meter-long corridor that stretched ahead, many bodies lay strewn about haphazardly.
Only a few of the corpses belonged to the Roman Country team.
But the wounds on these corpses were strange.
They were all claw marks, not injuries from knives, guns, or superpowers.
Chen Xing’s sharp senses picked up the scent of blood coming from the large door up ahead.
At that moment, Vice General Du was the first to reach the large iron door ahead.
From within the open doorway, a blast of cold air billowed out from the pitch-black interior.
"Watch out!" Chen Xing, the first to notice something was wrong, shouted as the dagger in her hand flew forward.
Hearing the shout, Vice General Du leaped back several steps and fixed his gaze on the darkness.
With a THUD, a white, humanoid figure fell to the ground, its upper body exposed to everyone.
It was humanoid, yes, but its entire body was covered in white fur.
The sharp nails on the fingertips of its white-furred hands perfectly matched the claw marks on the corpses on the floor.
Vice General Du shot Chen Xing a grateful look, his heart still pounding with fear.
If not for Chen Xing’s speed, he was afraid he would have been injured as well.
"What is this thing?" Wang Si wondered as he studied it.
It had a human-like form and facial features, but the rest of its body resembled a polar bear, with a perfect coat of fur.
"Young Master Song, another group has arrived outside!" the person standing guard at the entrance warned.
"So soon?" Song Yiguo muttered.
’What should we do?’
’We can only go deeper inside and hide for now.’
Ahead, Vice General Du led his men, cautiously probing deeper.
Just then, with pursuers at their backs and unknown dangers ahead, the corpses in the corridor began to stir, lurching to their feet one by one.
