Contract Marriage: Married to My Ex-Husband's Alpha Stepfather [BL]
Chapter 288: I’ll Stare Directly At The Sun
[FROLO]
The silence in the doctor’s office was deafening to say the least.
Sergei knew it couldn’t be good news, given the way Mr. Romanov wasn’t even bothering to look at him. That man terrified the living shit out of Sergei if the alpha was being honest.
He’d never really gotten around to having a normal chat with the man, and he was still having nightmares about the day he’d be forced to have that chat with him.
"Okay, I got the res— Mr. Moskowsky?" the doctor spoke, and Sergei nearly let out a groan.
"Focus on the patient, doctor. I’m only here as Chairman Romanov’s friend and nothing else," Sergei said, his tone flat and his face stoic as if to remind the doctor that she needed to remember what she was supposed to do.
"My apologies," the doctor said in earnest before giving the Romanovs copies of the report. There wasn’t a third one because obviously the doctor didn’t know that he’d be there.
"You can have this one," Masha said to Sergei, who was seated on her left side.
"Thank you."
Then they looked at the reports.
The numbers were normal.
Almost.
"Doctor... internal bleeding?" Mr. Romanov asked, and Sergei paused. He didn’t say a word, though, just stared intently at the piece of paper in front of him that he didn’t even understand.
Also, what the fuck did Romanov mean by internal bleeding?
"Yes. But we managed to stop it. One of the old surgical sites was aggravated by the impact of the explosion. The rest of his wounds are minor and will heal in a few weeks," the doctor said.
Sergei stared hopelessly.
"Doctor..." Sergei spoke, and she looked at him, still horrified, probably by the fact that Sergei Moskowsky was in her consultation room.
"He will live, right? He... He’ll be happy again, too, right?"
Sergei’s questions caught everyone by surprise.
Even Masha Romanova who had been teasing him earlier.
And when the three heads turned to the most dangerous alpha in the room, he just bowed his head as he had asked for more than he should have. Maybe he needed to step out, but Sergei needed to know.
He needed to understand that his Solnyshka would live.
He didn’t care about anything else other than that.
"Yes. But his life won’t be the same anymore," the doctor said carefully, and Sergei lifted his head to her. Thankfully, the Romanovs were looking back at the doctor again.
"What is that supposed to mean, doctor?" Masha asked this time.
"The old surgical site may have been fixed, but the impact from the explosion was too harsh on him and his body. Especially after the medical history he has. All the medicines he’d been using and the surgeries he’d undergone," the doctor said.
"What is going on with my son, doctor?" Mr. Romanov asked as if he were not here for a soft landing.
"I don’t know how to say this, so I’ll just give it to you straight. Katya will have a hard time carrying pregnancies should he want kids," the doctor said softly.
The hint of sadness in her tone was a reminder that the entire city of Frolo knew what had been done to Katya Romanov by the medics and at the hands of Milan Popova. It was the cruelest of things and the most unfair of them all.
"But doctor... he only just got proof last year that he had been able to carry kids. That he was in good condition.
"How can you say that about him right now just because of one explosion?" Masha said in agony, her heart shattering for her son, who only ever wanted a family of his own.
Her child, who only ever wanted to have children and live a simple life. Katya had been in so much pain over the years, and just when he was about to catch a break, he was being pulled back under it all.
Sergei didn’t breathe.
He was raging.
They had taken his Solnyshka’s happiness a second time. They were threatening it again. Someone was determined to ruin Katya’s life, and that was something that Sergei was not going to stand for.
"But doctor... That isn’t fair... how can his dream be snatched away from him again like that? Isn’t there anything you can do? I’ll pay whatever the cost is. Whoever you need. Even if it’s a uterine transplant. I’ll pay for it.
"Just... please... He’s only ever dreamed of having a family. Kids of his own. He’s happy with the senator, wants a family with him, you can’t... You can’t just break his heart again. Please tell me what I can do.
"He doesn’t even have to know about it," Sergei begged like this was his only focus. Like Katya’s happiness was the one thing that he’d strived for for so long. Like all he wanted was for Katya.
He had seen Katya around kids; how hopeful he was over the past year since that judgment. How things had gotten for him and how the orphanage’s weekly visits made him happier.
Sergei couldn’t watch Katya suffer again.
He couldn’t watch Katya cry himself to sleep, thinking he was not enough again. There was only so much that an omega could endure.
"I’m sorry, Mr. Moskowsky. There is no need for a transplant or an invasive surgery. And he will be able to carry pregnancies, only that they’ll be extremely high risk," the doctor said, and Sergei thought back to Vitya.
His Vitya, who had died because Vitya wanted to give him a child of their love.
His Vitya, who had an extremely high-risk pregnancy.
His Vitya, who died while he watched, because there was nothing he could do to save him.
His Vitya, who begged him to live and fall in love again.
Funny how he’d listened and fallen in love, and now there was a chance he would lose Katya too because of Katya’s dream that he couldn’t afford to take away from Katya.
What kind of fate was this?
Why was the universe so cruel to him and his family?
Why couldn’t they all just be happy for once in their lives?
Oh, but Sergei could think.
"... Also, we need to keep him sedated for three days to allow him to fully recover," the doctor said, and Mr. Romanov stared at the woman like she was speaking a whole different language to them.
"You just said his injuries are manageable. What do you mean he needs sedation again for three days?" Mr. Romanov asked.
"His body is severely exhausted, Mr. Romanov. It looks like he’s been running himself to the ground for a while now. And that, combined with the explosion and its effects on him, not to mention his previous medical history, Katya needs to take a break.
"One that I am certain he will not let himself take if we release him, especially with the accusations flying around," the doctor said.
Masha and Mr. Romanov turned to Sergei like they were suddenly curious about something.
"I swear I’ve NEVER overworked him," Sergei defended, hands raised in surrender.
It was almost diabolical, yet the genuine look of worry on the alpha’s face was something else altogether.
"Do you trust my son, Mr. Moskowsky?" Mr. Romanov asked unfazed.
"With my life," Sergei said confidently without giving it a second thought.
’He’s my lifeline; I can’t live without him,’ he almost added.
