Chapter 1621: Chapter 815: Officially Begun 2
"So weird, why are there only two camps? Didn’t they say it was a triangular defensive layout? Could it be they’ve already found our position and started relocating?"
Actually it wasn’t that; the other camp was just even more hidden.
But even with that setup, it still couldn’t escape Lin Beichen’s eyes. At the critical moment, he immediately spotted the core of the problem and snapped into combat mode. He knew that for everyone, this was the best response; otherwise, the pressure later would keep mounting, and they wouldn’t even have the chance to consider other options.
"Alright, listen to me, now is when it really matters. I’m sure we’ve got to bring our A-game, stay sharp. So, follow me."
Lin Beichen looked at Faraji as he spoke.
Sure enough, after doing a round of recon on the mountaintop, they locked onto the key issue. Turned out there really was a small base not far away.
"Logically, it can’t just be some tiny base. Trust me, the real trouble’s actually behind that mountain."
You could say this wasn’t just simple jungle warfare; it probably involved a complex terrain layout between the mountains as well.
"Question is, how the hell is there a mountain in this place?"
"Come on, that’s nonsense. This is obviously a hilly area."
Lin Beichen laughed.
"You really ought to study up a bit more. Sure, you’re a damn good commander, but every time you run into me, you’re just that little bit short."
Faraji was a bit speechless. What could he do? The guy in front of him was the top ace commander, undefeated before this.
Just like that, they did a detailed survey of the entire terrain. Right now, there were three key positions deep in the jungle, and they more or less knew what to do.
However, just as they were about to leave, Lin Beichen suddenly thought of something.
"Hold up, we still don’t know where the hostages are being held. If we just launch an attack blindly and something goes wrong, the consequences will be disastrous. But if we head straight in to rescue the hostages, we’ll definitely spook them."
"Man..."
Just then, a hint of a grin appeared on Faraji’s face.
"You know what they say, better lucky than early. Since we’ve come all this way, we can’t just slink off with our tails between our legs. We gotta at least leave them a ’welcome present’, right?"
In Faraji’s mind, with just the two of them, there was a decent chance they could pull off the rescue. Once that was done, everything else would fall into place.
"Just the two of us?"
Lin Beichen suddenly remembered that zero-casualty tactics plan, but he wasn’t sure it would work under these circumstances.
They had about two hours until sunrise, which meant they had to locate the target within that window.
"This is our primary research target. If nothing goes wrong, he should be a fairly well-known local figure."
It might sound like just a threat, but everyone knew the implications went far beyond what showed on the surface.
"I want to try first. Maybe that’s how we’ll pinpoint the real crux of the problem."
So they moved out immediately, doing everything they could to establish contact with the target, because they understood only by doing that could they make sure the problem wouldn’t resurface.
As time passed, the situation on the ground gradually became clearer. Only by fully grasping it could they resolve the issue at its root.
The two of them quietly crept up to the outside of one of the camps, but didn’t rush in—their intel still didn’t confirm whether the target was actually inside this one.
"You guys hear? Seems somebody sent people over here, planning to make a move. Thing is, we still gotta protect that VIP in our camp. Total headache."
"I don’t really know. Anyway, they haven’t set off yet. But I heard the boss say that person could show up at any time in any of the three camps, not necessarily ours."
"You gotta be kidding me. Our CO got drunk, brooded over it, and finally decided to keep that guy in our camp tonight."
...
A few of them were chattering away, all talking at once.
Listening in, Lin Beichen gradually pieced it together. If they wanted to pull off a rescue, the best shot was to act in this camp; once the target was being transported on the road, he’d be heavily guarded with guns all around.
"Storm the prison and snatch the guy? That’s my specialty. Relax, I’ll show you how it’s done, haha."
This was exactly Faraji’s signature move; for him, jobs like this were as easy as breathing.
"Yeah, I know how you’re going to play it."
In a situation like this, the tacit understanding between the two of them naturally showed.
But things weren’t that simple. If they wanted to solve this directly, just the two of them like this obviously wasn’t enough.
"Alright then, let’s give it a shot first."
...
However, things didn’t go as smoothly as they’d imagined. They both knew their objective hadn’t been achieved yet.
"I figured it’d turn out like this. Don’t rush it, let’s keep observing."
They decided to find a better angle to infiltrate the camp. Once inside, they discovered that the camp was extremely well run; everyone was on edge, alert to every movement around them.
And those searchlights kept sweeping back and forth, like they meant to light up every corner.
"Looks like breaking through from this side is impossible. We need another approach. Come with me."
Lin Beichen made a hand signal, and they moved along the wall, then quietly climbed into a small room.
Inside, most of the camp’s soldiers were fast asleep.
The two didn’t dare make a sound and carefully edged forward. Before long they reached the edge of the corridor, only to find someone standing guard there.
"No way around it."
They had to grab a couple of uniforms lying around, put them on, and then slowly walk ahead.
"We’re going to the bathroom!"
With that, they walked off.
Not thinking too much about it, they went into the restroom and began carefully checking the surroundings. They both knew that in some foreign facilities, restrooms sometimes hid secret doors.
Nobody would have guessed that there really was something hidden in the bathroom. Sure enough, after tapping and feeling around, they uncovered a mysterious spot.
"Don’t tell me the target’s actually in there?"
Faraji could hardly believe his eyes.
When they stepped inside, sure enough, they saw the target. According to the photo, the man had already been beaten beyond recognition.
But by examining him closely, they still confirmed he was the one they were looking for.
"Holy crap, with him like this, how are we supposed to get him out?"
Faraji was practically ready to back out.
"We’re pulling out."
Lin Beichen shook his head as well. He thought to himself that the man had already lost mobility; if they tried to extract him like this, the fallout could be unimaginable.
Of course, he started thinking hard about what would actually work. This whole thing was definitely not that simple; if it went wrong, the consequences would be severe.
By the time the two of them returned to the command room, it was already morning.
The general, who’d waited all night, finally saw them come back.
"Alright, let’s keep it short. The troops are about to move out. For this op, we focus on the road segments between the three camps. I’ve got intel that our key figure will show up on one of those stretches."...
Lin Beichen quickly relayed the intel to everyone.
"This is actually their usual play. When many countries want to conduct research, they find the target site heavily guarded and full of hostages. Once fighting breaks out, those hostages become the army’s ’Protective Talisman’."
The general’s words left Lin Beichen and Faraji stunned. So this was how some forces were willing to operate, by any means necessary? But they weren’t going to buy it.
"Hah, then they’re in real trouble. Sucks for them they ran into us. Since that’s the case, this won’t be wrapped up so easily."
Lin Beichen’s lips curled in a wicked grin; he had to bring his best game now.
"Faraji, here’s the plan. As soon as the fighting starts, I’ll watch for where the VIP shows up among the various units. This time it’s mainly a feint; our top priority is to get the hostages out."
