Chapter 94: Chapter 94: Do You Believe It?

Name-calling for hundreds of people took quite a while; the commander drank water a few times mid-way. When he got Jay Monroe’s card, a hint of a smile flickered across his face, and he spoke into the microphone: "Our team has two snipers in total. Jay Monroe is one of them. Welcome, Jay."

This was obviously special treatment that other roles didn’t get, and everyone’s gaze focused on Jay Monroe, followed by thunderous applause.

The strong admire the strong; as the most crucial role in the team, many people looked at Jay with envy and awe.

This competition depended on individual ability—tested, screened through several rounds—they got their assigned roles based on assessments by the base.

No one questioned whether Jay Monroe could handle the sniper position.

Jay stood up with his high-powered sniper rifle, nodded to everyone, and then sat back down.

His face calm as hell, he sat down, lips curling into a grin as he flashed a dazzling smile at Renee Morgan: "Hey Renee, you think this bro’s got your back?"

Such confidence.

Renee’s lips twitched, and she looked away, honestly couldn’t bear to watch.

The commander kept rolling down the list; near the end, there were only a few cards left in his hand.

Jay sensed something off, turned to look at Renee: "Why haven’t I heard your name?"

He was honestly curious about Renee’s role. He’d thought maybe medic, but after seeing plenty of medics in the hall with their distinct gear—boxes with cross marks, and none of them holding guns—Renee clearly wasn’t a medic. He guessed maybe assaulter, but assaulters tended to be reckless, and that didn’t fit her vibe. Was it something else?

Renee looked like a student in class, focused on listening to the commander call names. Hearing Jay’s confused question, she brushed it off: "I got here early, my card must be buried at the bottom..."

Jay glanced at her, then his eyes went to the commander at the front.

The commander, parched, picked up the water cup on the table and took several sips. He continued with the microphone: "Uh... Renee Morgan?"

Renee shot up immediately, called out, "Here!"

The commander saw the young woman, nodded kindly, then leaned over to check her card—looking at the role section...

Wait, is he really getting old and blind?

The commander looked up at Renee, then down at her card, back up again, down at her card one more time...

The previously quiet hall started rumbling softly—what’s with the commander getting stuck?

His face full of shock and confusion?

Did this girl turn out to be an infiltrator?

Everyone’s gaze at Renee shifted.

Traitor!!!

Renee: "..."

Jay furrowed his brows, fingers tapping on his sniper rifle with little metallic clangs.

The commander checked several times, finally sure he wasn’t seeing things—she’s actually a sniper?

Which back door did she use to get here?

This base event is so important, and yet things are getting reckless?

Seeing the commander’s face turn steadily darker with confusion, everyone’s suspicions solidified; their gaze at Renee tinged with thick contempt.

The livestream chat finally caught on—this sniper spot is too important, and the commander really doesn’t want to give it to Renee?

This is gonna be good.

Yesterday it was just disgruntled show team members, easy enough to handle since their skills weren’t great. But here, in front of tons of players, everyone supposedly earned their place, and the instructor gave Renee the sniper role—he’s throwing her into the fire.

"Ahem ahem..." The commander noticed the commotion below, realized his reaction was over the top, and got his act together. He glanced at the card again, looked up at the girl who’d been standing forever: "Renee Morgan, role: sniper."

"Dang—" Jay’s tapping missed, and his fingernail stabbed with a sharp pain.

The hall, which had only been mildly restless, suddenly erupted in chaos.

Everyone’s gaze at Renee was full of shock, doubt, disbelief—mirroring the commander’s shifting expression moments ago.

The commander pursed his lips, still looking at Renee: "She’s also one of Team Blue’s two snipers. Everyone, get acquainted."

Acquainted... More than that. Seriously unforgettable.

Among 500 people, you could forget anyone’s name, but Renee Morgan’s was etched into their brains now.

Letting a girl be the sniper?

Who the hell set up their team to fail?

Everyone was pretty bummed, faces looking grim.

The commander was already moving on with the roll call.

Renee sat back down, turning to glance sideways at Jay Monroe beside her.

Right then, Jay was staring hard at her, his pretty eyes growing cold.

He never imagined that his new partner would end up being a girl.

Look at those skinny arms and legs—can she even run with a gun?

Jay spoke dryly: "How did you get the sniper role?"

How did I get it?

Got the base access pass, didn’t get captured, so got assigned sniper by default.

Renee: "If I say... I got it by skill, would you believe me?"

Pfft. Jay smirked.

Renee: "..."

Roll call finished, the commander started discussing the battle plans with everyone. The projector in the hall displayed the entire competition zone, starting with the huge Team Blue and Team Red buildings, then zooming in on the surrounding area. The two big buildings were quite far apart, with the surroundings even including Seabrook.

Once the environment was explained, the commander outlined the teams’ travel gear. There were ships docked at Seabrook for both sides—hence the captain role.

Both sides had vehicles too. In fact, if needed, you can steal the other team’s cars. Basically, anything on the battlefield is fair game, as long as your skills and authority allow and you don’t break the rules.

Renee listened closely. Cars could be stolen, and it wasn’t against the rules? So, aside from forbidden actions—no killing uncaptured escapees, no betraying teammates, no killing, and no attacking surrendered enemies—everything else is up to their own tricks?

Of course, they had to follow the commander’s orders, or it’d be a rule violation too.

The commander gave a detailed breakdown of each role, snipers placed first. In case of shortage, snipers got priority for gear, ammo, supplies—whatever was scarce, snipers got it first.

"..."

The commander wrapped up, looked at the crowd: "Any questions? Anything unclear or needing clarification?"

Several people quickly raised their hands downstairs—not just one.

The commander gestured to the first row. A member in the middle stood up to ask a question.
