Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Reality

[Heh, these idiots arguing for Wendy Aldridge, do they not get this is a live broadcast? Every shot has a replay. Wendy’s move was way too obvious, you could go straight to the police and file a case.]

[Already called the cops, waiting for the official response.]

[Evidence has been saved, just waiting for the official response.]

[Wendy Aldridge is such a snake. Looks all soft and weak, but who knew she’d be this shady—no, toxic, just pure poison.]

[Sigh, calling the cops is useless, she’s overseas, literally out of reach. Gotta wait till she comes back.]

[...]

Renee Morgan tormented Wendy Aldridge to her breaking point; Wendy finally snapped and screamed before Renee let go of her wrist.

Wendy tumbled backward, landing on the ground, glared up furiously at Renee—then remembered all the cameras and sobbed, "I didn’t do it, I didn’t do anything..."

After exposing Wendy’s dirty deeds, Renee couldn’t even be bothered to waste another second. So what if she refused to admit it? With all the cameras, the evidence was ironclad—right and wrong would be judged by the world.

Time for her to reap what she sowed and taste the wrath of millions spitting in her face.

Renee gathered the broken rope, stuffed it in her pack. Ropes were busted, but the evidence was preserved. If Wendy ever tried to deny it, Renee could whip out the proof and crush her with it.

Wendy watched Renee’s back as she walked away, then lowered her gaze, her face covered in tears.

Zara Chapman honestly hadn’t expected Wendy to have the guts to pull something like this. She felt a little regret—Renee really was lucky; the rope snapped, but she didn’t fall in.

Wendy turned to see Zara standing still, put on a pitiful face and stepped closer: "Ms. Chapman, you’re my only witness. You stood right behind me the whole time. You know best whether I cut that rope."

She looked at Zara with a pleading gaze. She hadn’t been here long, but she’d been silently looking after Zara the whole time—back outside the forest, she helped fetch hot water, hang laundry, sometimes helped with cleaning, and in the forest, when Zara didn’t have a kit, she’d lend her supplies, dabbed ointment for insect bites and scratches, always comforted her, gave her emotional support...

Not to mention, they’d schemed together several times—they were supposed to be on the same side.

The truth was, Zara hadn’t seen Wendy do it, but the rope really had failed—right where Wendy was—super unlucky to get caught by Renee. And Wendy just happened to be gripping the combat knife; didn’t look like she’d just "picked it up."

All in all, Zara knew Wendy was done for, getting caught on camera doing this.

This could be minor or major—minor, she could say it was a dispute between teammates and Wendy got impulsive.

Major? Then it could be huge.

The fact was, they were supposed to be teammates. What Wendy did? That’s a backstab. How is that any different from being a traitor? Betraying the team—consequences are serious and the punishment is no joke.

Plus, there’s possible criminal involvement.

Back then, Kyle Beckett’s life was in danger—it was Renee who tossed over the rope so he could hold on and avoid sinking too fast, and that’s why the rescue team had enough time to arrive.

And what did Wendy do? She literally cut off someone’s escape route.

At the time, Renee was desperately pulling Kyle, putting in all her strength, and Wendy, behind her, just cut the rope. If the rescue hadn’t shown up right then, the rope snapping would’ve had Renee lose her grip and definitely fall into the muck...

Trying to harm two people at the same time—that’s a serious crime, way worse than when Wendy locked up Renee and the crew outside the forest.

After all her analysis, Zara realized Wendy asking her to be her witness was pure wishful thinking.

If it weren’t for the cameras, no evidence, she wouldn’t mind helping cover it up, tell a little lie. But with the cameras? If Wendy got hit with a big charge and she vouched for her—even if she wasn’t an accomplice, she’d get destroyed online.

Zara could be reckless sometimes, but not naive. She understood how the world works.

One thing’s for sure—Wendy must absolutely hate Renee now, and honestly, that made Zara happy. Hope those two bite each other and never stop.

"Uh... I was just focused on pulling the rope, didn’t really notice..." Zara shook her head, looking totally clueless.

Wendy hadn’t expected Zara to just desert her—tears fell: "So, that means you stood behind me the whole time and never saw me cut the rope, right?"

Zara nodded. From Wendy’s angle, it was true, she hadn’t seen anything. She didn’t need to lie: "I was desperate to save someone, using all my strength to pull. Then, when the rescue team showed up, the rope snapped. I even fell to the ground."

When the rope broke, Zara was pulling with all her might—of course she’d fall over.

Wendy: "Ugh, I was trying to save them, too. I really didn’t do it, how could I do something like that..."

Wendy understood perfectly well—this was totally different from locking up Renee and the staff. She absolutely could NOT admit to doing such a thing, otherwise she was basically confessing to harming someone. If this got hammered down, forget being a celebrity—she could end up in prison. She’d never admit it, not in a million years.

Zara could see the guilt in her right away, but now wasn’t the time to let her give up. She needed to keep Wendy and Renee at each other’s throats.

"Right, we were all trying to save people... Just don’t be too upset, the fact that everyone’s safe now is luckiest of all." Zara spoke offhandedly.

Exactly—Kyle and Renee were fine. What was there to worry about?

Besides, sure, Renee was accusing her, but did anyone actually see her cut the rope?

If she didn’t admit it, what could anyone really do?

Wendy quickly regained her composure, speaking gently: "Ms. Chapman, I don’t blame Renee at all. I know she has a hot temper, acts on impulse..."

She silently wept, playing the victim but still managing to be generous and forgiving.

Zara wasn’t naïve—not for a second did she buy Wendy’s lame acting—but at least she’d bounced back. Hopefully she’d be back at full strength and take Renee down.

Judging from their current strength, Wendy wasn’t going to win against Renee anytime soon, but who knows? Once a woman goes berserk, no one can stop her. If Wendy managed to drag Renee down with her, would Renee really come out unscathed?

Zara comforted Wendy for a bit. The wild apples were a lost cause, so they headed back. Zara purposely followed the direction Renee had gone off in.
