Ni Mengxue’s voice softened.

"Believe me, if Aunt Ruo were still alive, she wouldn’t want you to spiral into this darkness."

Lu Yucai fell silent.

She gently wiped the tears from his face.

"When she died, she didn’t scream, ’Yucai, come and protect me.’ She might have even made sure you didn’t look in her direction because she didn’t want you to carry the guilt."

"Yucai, tell me. Why did you decide to take this step? I know you wouldn’t do this without a reason. Did someone say something to you? Was it Fu Lin? Did he provoke you?"

As she spoke, Ni Mengxue’s anger began to rise. For the first time, she felt genuine rage.

’If this entire world is destined to kill my husbands, then I’ll destroy this world first.’

That was the conclusion she had reached in her previous life.

Unfortunately, by the time she had reached that conclusion, she had already lost all four of them.

It had been too late.

But this time, she vowed that she would destroy this world before it dared to harm even one of her husbands.

Lu Yucai stared into her eyes. The killing intent within them was so intense that even he was stunned.

He slowly closed his eyes.

"It wasn’t him. I dreamed of Aunt Ruo. She told me that I shouldn’t have survived. Whenever I close my eyes, I see her. I feel as though she’s going to haunt me."

His voice trembled. "Maybe she really is haunting me."

He opened his eyes again, despair filling them. "Mengxue, you shouldn’t save a criminal like me."

Ni Mengxue’s expression softened. "For me, you’re not a criminal."

She reached out and gently touched his face.

"Yucai, if I were in your place, I would still have let Aunt Ruo die if it meant protecting you."

Lu Yucai’s heart tightened.

Ni Mengxue continued calmly, "To me, you’re more precious than this entire world. So what if they died? It must be their fate."

"No!"

Her words seemed to trigger something inside him.

Lu Yucai suddenly shouted, "They didn’t deserve to die! They died because of my foolish mistakes, again and again!"

His chest heaved as he stared at her.

"Mengxue, you can’t talk about people’s lives like they’re nothing!"

Ni Mengxue snorted. "They’re nothing but damn ants. I don’t care whether they live or die."

It was the first time Lu Yucai truly saw how dark Ni Mengxue’s selfishness could be.

He stared at her in disbelief.

Her eyes were completely numb, yet there was a strange obsession within them as she looked at him.

For a moment, Lu Yucai couldn’t find any words. Ni Mengxue eventually sighed.

"I need some time alone." He said he did not want to look at her anymore.

Seeing her not moving, Lu Yucai assured her.

"I won’t do anything stupid. Just leave me here."

Ni Mengxue looked at him for a few seconds before nodding. "All right."

She took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down, returning to her usual expression.

As she walked toward the door, she heard faint footsteps outside.

She didn’t know who had overheard their conversation, but she wasn’t in the mood to care.

Meanwhile, Fu Lin, who had heard everything, sat in his room with a furious expression.

His smile twisted. "That bitch."

His voice was filled with hatred.

"She truly doesn’t care. Even after losing her aunt, she can still say something like that. She didn’t deserve my Chiwu’s devotion or sacrifice."

His fists tightened.

"I should contact Su Yao and have her killed. I shouldn’t have shown her any mercy."

As he continued muttering, he suddenly felt a hand pat his shoulder. Fu Lin turned around and frowned.

"What are you doing, Valer?"

Valer remained calm. "You looked pretty gloomy just now."

"I heard something."

Fu Lin quickly told him everything he had overheard.

In fact, Fu Lin hadn’t been able to sleep properly for the past few nights after losing Ruo Chiwu.

He was consumed by hatred and constantly regretted not reaching her in time to protect her.

That was why he had often lingered around the villa area at night.

Who would have thought that tonight, while wandering nearby, he would overhear Ni Mengxue saying those words to Lu Yucai?

"You will finally take revenge, right?"

Fu Lin stared intently at Valer.

Valer, however, remained as calm as ever. "Do you know why she said those words?"

Fu Lin waved his hand angrily.

"I don’t fucking care why she said them! Even if she has some pitiful reason, I don’t care. She said those words, which means she’s exactly as selfish as she sounds."

He stood up.

"Let’s kill her. We’ll make a plan, and we..."

"Did you ever consider that she was simply trying to make sure that the people who survived would continue to survive?"

Valer interrupted him.

Fu Lin shouted, "It doesn’t matter! In the end, she’s just a heartless bitch. We shouldn’t follow her at all. I’m going to tell everyone what she’s really like!"

With that, he stood up and was about to rush out. Valer clenched his fist.

"Then wait here. There’s something I want to tell you."

Fu Lin frowned and looked at him.

....................................................

Meanwhile, Ni Mengxue began making a different plan.

Since Lu Yucai was struggling to remain in this base and Meng Xiaoni himself had chosen to stay, she had no choice but to leave Meng Xiaoni behind.

After all, Meng Xiaoni didn’t want to leave with her, and keeping Lu Yucai here any longer might push him toward another extreme decision.

She couldn’t allow that to happen.

Even while making her plans, Ni Mengxue arranged for Lu Yucai’s subordinates to keep watch over him.

Once everything was settled, she checked the predicted path of the zombie tide.

By the time they left tomorrow, the Fair Shallow Land will be welcoming its first batch of zombies.

By the time they reached the base, the zombie tide should have already passed and been dealt with. However, there was still a high chance that they would end up clashing with the zombies along the way.
