CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 94: THE UNYIELDING BARRIER

  • Next Chapter

Deep within the silent expanse of Caius’s soul sea, the black waters rippled under an intense, crushing pressure.

For hours, Caius had been trying to project the Flame Demon out of the Crown Core and into reality. The construct—usually a terrifying, towering silhouette of compressed dark fire—was currently battered, exhausted, and visibly wounded. Its fiery form flickered weakly as Caius repeatedly slammed its essence against the outer threshold of his soul space.

Every attempt ended the same way. The moment the Flame Demon reached the boundary separating the soul sea from the physical realm, it hit an invisible, impenetrable wall. The spatial rejection created a localized shockwave, forming a churning black pool of condensed mana at the boundary.

If Caius forced it any harder, the sheer spatial friction would grind the construct to dust.

Caius finally cut the mana flow and stopped.

The Flame Demon collapsed onto the dark water of the soul sea, letting out a low, ragged rumble of pure relief. It looked up at the rotating obsidian sphere of the Crown Core with something akin to gratitude; a few more attempts, and the entity would have been smashed to absolute pulp against that unseen barrier.

In stark contrast to the struggling demon, the male Arachne warrior moved effortlessly across the soul space. Though roughly five feet tall with a dark, spider-like thorax and armored limbs, he had somehow unlocked the secret to entering and exiting the Crown Core at will. The creature seemed thoroughly content inside the domain, traversing the obsidian floor and basking in the incredibly dense, rich dark mana radiating from the core's interior. Every breath he drew in that space seemed to refine his dark chitin, making his heavy silk strands hum with latent power.

Looking past the Arachne, Caius took note of the profound changes taking root within the Crown Core itself.

The liquid obsidian energy hadn't just nourished his soul—it was actively reconstructing the domain. The central island had noticeably expanded, pushing its borders deeper into the dark waters. The ancient, ruined temple atop the rise was undergoing a silent restoration; its collapsed pillars were re-aligning, the cracked stone slabs sealing seamlessly, and the worn geometric lines along the walls glowing with a faint, reborn vitality.

At the heart of the temple sat an ancient stone table. Its surface was etched with a complex, hypnotic spiral carving that seemed to gently twist whenever Caius focused his mind on it.

Planted precisely along the curve of that etched spiral were nine small, recessed indentations. Two of those nine holes were no longer empty. In the first sat a glowing, ember-red orb—the condensed essence bead of the Flame Demon. In the second sat a dark, iridescent violet orb belonging to the Arachne warrior. The remaining seven indentations remained bare, cold, and waiting.

I need to explore the temple properly and study that spiral when I have time, Caius resolved, filing the thought away. There are secrets in those nine positions that the core hasn't fully revealed yet.

Shifting his focus away from the inner domain, Caius withdrew his conscious mind and went back to reality.

He opened his physical eyes to the quiet dawn, finding himself sitting on the worn obsidian steps of the courtyard temple. His elbows rested on his knees as his pale eyes stared thoughtfully into the rising morning mist. The physical morning was cool, but his mind burned with an annoying, persistent puzzle.

There is something missing, he thought, tracing his thumb over his palm. The Flame Demon construct has form, density, and intent. The core has more than enough raw power. Yet reality rejects its transition completely, while the Arachne passes through effortlessly.

He needed to ask Orven. The elder spatial mage had spent centuries studying the boundary between realm-seams, spirit vessels, and physical space.

But how do I frame the question? Caius pondered, leaning his head back against the cold stone pillar.

If he asked directly about summoning or projecting a living core construct through a soul boundary, Orven would immediately realize Caius possessed a high-tier ancient core structure—or worse, that he was attempting grand-scale soul-manifestation. He couldn't mention the Crown Core, nor could he reveal the existence of the Flame Demon.

He needed a theoretical disguise. A hypothetical question about high-level spatial barriers and mana translation that sounded like a student simply trying to understand the limits of Orven's own spatial magic.

Caius closed his eyes, mapping out the precise wording in his mind as he waited on the temple steps for the sun to rise. He would frame it as a problem of spatial displacement and density translation—asking why a dense dark-mana spell construct would shatter against a realm seam if forced through without a spatial anchor.

Orven would think Caius was merely probing the advanced theory behind Void-Stride. He wouldn't suspect for a second that the boy was trying to unleash a nightmare from within his own soul.
