CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 72: THE ASSASSIN'S FLAME

  • Next Chapter

One week later, a private training hall deep within House Vel'drin had been cleared for a single purpose.

There were no clan guards surrounding the chamber and no spectators from the household. Only a handful of elders had been permitted to attend, sitting along the raised stone platform alongside the Patriarch. They watched in absolute silence, their expressions guarded.

Caius was already waiting on the floor below. He sat near the center of the hall with his pair of short swords of fine elven craftsmanship resting across his lap, his back straight and his eyes closed. In his lead hand was Nightdancer, the Macrae heirloom. He had been told nothing beyond the fact that Old Bones had arranged another opponent, but the atmosphere itself told him this encounter would be different. There was an oppressive weight hanging in the cold air that had not been present during his previous spars.

Caius opened his eyes when he heard heavy footsteps approaching from the entrance.

Old Bones entered first, followed by a dark elf.

The moment the stranger stepped into the chamber, Caius felt something deeply unsettling. There was no visible hostility in the elf's expression; his face was calm, almost indifferent, and his posture carried none of the usual tension of a warrior preparing for battle. Yet an invisible, sinister presence seemed to cling to his body like a second skin.

The dark elf looked directly at Caius. For several seconds, neither of them moved. Then Caius noticed the faint glint of pure excitement in the assassin's eyes. He was looking forward to this.

Old Bones stepped between them, his expression unusually pleased. "This is a death match," the old assassin announced, his voice carrying clearly to the raised platform. "You both may kill each other. May fate favor the victor."

The elders remained silent. The Patriarch watched carefully, his jaw set tight.

Caius rose and drew his short swords, the steel catching the dim light of the chamber as Nightdancer led his stance. Across from him, the dark elf drew a lone sword from his side. The blade was simple in appearance, but the moment it was exposed, Caius felt the faint, copper tang of lingering death. It was the residual intent of countless slaughters carried by the steel and its wielder; the dark elf carried the distinct weight of someone who killed without hesitation.

Caius focused his senses. The assassin's mana core flared, burning with a dark red glow that intensified in a fraction of a second.

Caius's eyes narrowed at the speed of the buildup. Far Sight locked onto the core while Inner Sight traced the mana as it surged through the elf's legs and flooded his entire body.

The assassin vanished.

Caius moved instantly as a flicker of intense heat passed across his shoulder. He twisted away just in time to see the stone floor where he had been standing moments earlier begin to glow red, heat shimmering off the surface.

Caius landed several steps away and glanced at the scorched stone. The attack had barely missed him.

The dark elf was already moving again.

From the audience, Old Bones watched with open satisfaction. The Patriarch glanced toward the old assassin, watching his face for several long moments before finally shaking his head. He could not determine whether Old Bones was trying to train Caius or simply murder him.

On the training floor, Caius lowered his stance as his own mana began to circulate, the elven blades held ready. He stepped into the nearest patch of shadow and disappeared completely.

The dark elf's eyes shifted. Caius emerged from a blind spot, sweeping Nightdancer toward the assassin's neck. The dark elf parried smoothly, but Caius twisted instantly, attacking from the opposite side with his second blade. The assassin caught that strike as well.

Caius vanished again. The shadows beneath the high walls seemed to ripple as he reappeared from another direction, his attacks coming from unpredictable angles as he used Shadow Step to manipulate his position around the room.

Yet the assassin blocked every strike with uncanny instinct.

When Caius disappeared once more, Old Bones's expression changed. He leaned forward slightly, his eyes narrowing with disbelief. He had seen this technique before, but Caius was no longer simply using the basic application of Shadow Step. He had already begun moving through the shadows with a level of fluid control that should have taken years of practice to achieve. Old Bones had spent decades mastering the art himself, yet Caius was already crossing the threshold into the second stage.

The battle became a flickering exchange of shadow and dark flame. Caius emerged from one side to strike before vanishing into thin air, while the assassin answered with explosive bursts of dark red energy and waves of heat that scorched the stone wherever they passed.

Neither could gain a decisive advantage. Caius's shadow movements disrupted the assassin's strikes, while the assassin's flames forced Caius back whenever he attempted to close the distance. Their techniques repeatedly canceled one another out.

For a time, the match remained evenly balanced. Then the dark elf shifted his posture.

His mana core flared violently, and a distortion appeared around his frame. There was no visible flame at first, but the air surrounding him began to tremble from intense heat.

The assassin stepped forward, leaving a faint mist of heat in his wake, and accelerated.

Caius barely avoided the first strike. The second came immediately afterward, forcing him to cross his short swords to block. Heat surged across the fine steel and scorched his hands, forcing Caius to withdraw quickly.

The assassin advanced again, his movements growing faster with every second. The invisible flame surrounding his body moved with him, creating a lingering wake of heat that made approaching him increasingly dangerous.

Caius tried to parry another strike, but as he came too close, pain burned across his forearm. He retreated into the darkness immediately, nursing the singed skin.

The assassin's eyes gleamed as he searched the room, but Caius remained hidden within the shadows, watching.

He refused to deploy the Black Domain here. That absolute technique could end the battle instantly, but it would teach him nothing, and it would expose his deepest secret to the elders on the platform. He wanted to defeat this opponent using his own martial refinement.

He studied the invisible fire. His Far Sight followed the flow of mana while his Inner Sight mapped its circulation through the assassin's body.

Caius understood the principle now: the mana was continuously reinforcing the elf's flesh while radiating the invisible flame outward. It was not merely an offensive aura, but a complete technique that turned the wielder's entire body into a weapon.

Caius tried his thread arts. Black threads emerged from the shadows to wrap around the assassin's path, but the radiant heat consumed them instantly.

Caius altered his intent. Slow. The threads tightened, but the fire burned through them just as quickly. Hold. The threads attempted to bind the assassin's limbs, only to be destroyed. Destroy. The threads became denser, yet the flame surrounding the dark elf incinerated them before they could reach his skin.

Caius remained hidden, observing and reflecting. If the threads could not physically restrain the flame, he would have to change how he used them.

His Crown Core stirred, and an idea formed.

Caius began weaving. Black threads emerged from the darkness, but this time they did not spread across the floor. They gathered around his own position, shaping themselves according to his deliberate intent.

A figure emerged from the shadows, perfectly mimicking Caius's height, posture, and twin-blade stance.

The assassin stopped, his eyes widening slightly.

The black construct stepped forward, and the dark elf swung his sword. The flaming blade passed through the shadow, but then the construct struck back. The assassin barely raised his guard in time, the physical impact forcing him backward.

His expression hardened. The shadow had real weight; it was not a mere illusion.

Caius created another, then another, until five identical figures stood around the chamber. Each was formed from condensed black threads and shadow, carrying a physical presence the assassin had not anticipated.

The dark elf lunged at one, but the construct blocked his strike. Another struck from behind, forcing him to spin and deflect it. A third attacked from his flank. The assassin spun, his flaming body cutting through the shadows, but the constructs continued pressing forward relentlessly.

Caius remained hidden among them. The five figures moved around the assassin from different angles, forcing him to defend against attacks that followed no unified pattern. Each construct possessed only a fraction of Caius's physical strength, but five opponents were still five opponents.

The assassin's breathing grew heavy. He cut down one shadow, only for another to take its place instantly. He destroyed a second, but two more pressed in from opposite sides.

The tide of the battle had completely turned.

Caius watched carefully from within the shadows, realizing another possibility. He did not have to limit himself to creating independent constructs; he could imitate the assassin's defense directly.

Caius began weaving again. Black threads wrapped tightly around his own body, spreading over his arms, legs, and torso. The shadows condensed until his physical form was entirely concealed beneath a dense layer of black energy.

The assassin looked around the chamber, unable to tell which shadowed figure was the real Caius.

All five figures advanced simultaneously.

The dark elf raised his sword, but Caius and his constructs struck at once. The assassin blocked the first blow, parried a second from the side, and deflected a third blade.

Then the fifth shadow appeared directly behind him.

The assassin twisted too late. Caius emerged from the darkness, his real short swords flashing. Nightdancer led the assault as his dual-blade style executed a flawless, blinding combination.

The first strike bypassed the assassin's open guard. The second followed immediately.

The dark elf staggered as his flaming aura flickered and died. Caius stepped through the fading heat and delivered the final, decisive cut.

The assassin collapsed onto the stone floor with a heavy thud.

The chamber fell completely silent. No elder spoke, and no one moved. The remaining black constructs dissolved into fine threads and vanished into the damp air.

Caius remained standing over the fallen killer, Nightdancer held firm in his lead hand as his breathing remained heavy but steady.

The Patriarch slowly rose from his seat, his eyes fixed on the motionless body below before he turned to Old Bones. "What was that?"

Old Bones did not answer immediately.

The Patriarch turned fully toward the elder, his voice dangerously quiet. "Did you teach Caius a secret art?"

Old Bones looked down at the boy, then turned back to the Patriarch. "No."

The word hung heavily in the silent chamber. And for the first time, even Old Bones did not fully understand what kind of monster he was helping to forge.
