CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 67: THE BLACK DOMAIN
Dareth unleashed his magic.
The accumulated mana erupted from his core and hit the chamber with violent force. Ice raced across the stone floor, climbing the walls and ceiling until the entire training hall vanished beneath a translucent shell of frozen energy. Within moments, a massive sphere of ice sealed Caius and Dareth inside, cutting off the outside world.
Beyond the barrier, Old Bones stood frozen, his expression hardening as the domain snapped shut.
Inside, the temperature plunged. Frost spider-webbed beneath Caius's boots, and his breath bloomed into heavy white mist. Dareth stood several paces away, his robes churning in a harsh, supernatural wind.
Then he laughed, a strange, flat sound echoing inside the frozen tomb.
"You understand now, don't you?"
Caius tried to step forward, but his body refused. An invisible, crushing weight pinned him to the floor. His muscles strained, but the domain itself fought his every movement. This wasn't magic thrown from a distance; it was an environment bent to his enemy's will.
Dareth spread his arms, his crimson eyes gleaming with cruel satisfaction. "In my domain, I control everything. The ground beneath your feet. The air in your lungs. The ice around you." He slowly raised one hand, locking his gaze onto Caius. "And you."
As Caius's eyes narrowed, Dareth began to draw upon his core. Mana surged through his meridians and pooled in his raised palm, condensing into a swirling sphere of dark-blue energy.
Caius watched the spell take shape. Far Sight revealed the dense churn of the warlock's core; Inner Sight mapped the exact vector of the mana. He knew the impending blast would be devastating, and he was completely anchored in place.
Dareth's smile widened as the energy expanded. "Do you understand now why warriors fear warlocks?"
Caius didn't answer. His breathing remained steady, his eyes fixed on the gathering light, even as the crushing pressure doubled.
Then, deep within him, something snapped into place.

His Crown Core awakened.
The response was immediate and violent. Darkness surged through his veins as the Black Core answered the call. Dense, ink-black mana erupted from Caius, flooding his meridians with enough force to shake the frozen ground beneath them.
Dareth's smile faltered. "What...?"
The spell forming in his hand flickered.
Black energy coiled around Caius's arms and shoulders, wrapping his torso before rising behind him like a living shadow suspended in deep water. When he raised his head, his eyes were entirely black, the whites completely swallowed by darkness.
Dareth took an involuntary step back, his voice dropping to a whisper. "What are you?"
Caius gave no reply.
The Crown Core continued to bleed the Black Core dry, gathering the darkness into a dense sphere around him. It started small, barely larger than his frame, before violently expanding. The black anomaly pushed outward, swallowing the ambient light as it slammed into the frozen walls of the training hall.
Dareth stared in disbelief as his domain fought back. The two forces ground together, causing the icy sphere to tremble violently.
Crack.
Fractures webbed across the translucent ice. Dareth's eyes widened. "No!"
He poured every drop of his remaining mana into the domain, thickening the walls, but the black sphere expanded again. A deep, resonant crack rolled through the chamber.
Then the nature of the damage changed. The fractures were no longer simple breaks in the ice; black, vein-like lines spread rapidly across the surface.
Dareth paled. The darkness wasn't just breaking his domain. It was eating it.
The corruption spread until the ice was entirely veined in black. Then, the domain simply dissolved. The ice, the crushing pressure, the freezing mist, all of it was swallowed whole. The frozen shell vanished into the expanding mass of shadow before the black sphere itself contracted and snapped out of existence.
Outside, Old Bones hadn't moved an inch.
The elder had witnessed high magic, domains, and grand martial feats in his time. He had seen warriors shatter enchanted battlements and mages erase entire vanguard formations. But he had never seen a domain devoured.
When the darkness vanished, the chamber fell dead silent. Remnants of melting ice slicked the stone floor.
In the center of the hall, Caius remained standing. His shoulders heaved as he fought for air, his clothes soaked with sweat and his face pale from exhaustion. The void in his eyes had receded, leaving them clear once more.
Several paces away, Dareth lay sprawled on the stones. His robes were shredded, his body battered and coated in frost, but his chest still rose and fell. He groaned, his fingers twitching against the wet floor.
Caius stared at the empty air where the domain had been a moment prior.
Approaching slowly, Old Bones looked between the defeated warlock and the standing boy. Beneath Caius's obvious physical drain, the elder could sense a shift. Something fundamental had answered the warlock's challenge.
Old Bones's expression darkened. He had requested a mage to test the boy's limits. Instead, Caius had revealed something far more dangerous: a human boy who didn't just break a warlock's domain, but consumed it whole.
