CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

Chapter 61: THE SHADOW OF THE TWO YEARS

The heavy obsidian doors of the Moon Palace ground shut behind them with a deafening, final thud, sealing away the cold, suffocating scrutiny of the tribunal.

Sereth had not been led out with them. By court decree, he remained detained within the high-security vaults of the palace, though his status as a former Shadowblade and heir of House Vel'drin spared him a common dungeon cell. He would be held in honorable captivity, properly fed and permitted visits from his immediate kin, until the morning of the trial.

For now, Caius, Old Bones, and the Patriarch walked alone through the deep, quiet tunnels leading back toward Vel'drin territory. The Patriarch marched at the head of their small group, his heavy velvet cloak sweeping against the damp stone, his shadow cutting through the ambient violet light. Old Bones sauntered beside Caius, his hands tucked idly into his ragged sleeves, his usual relaxed demeanor returning the moment the court was behind them.

After a long stretch of silent marching, the Patriarch’s deep voice echoed off the stone. "You have two years."

Caius glanced toward the tall dark elf.

"Two years until the Trial of Fate," the Patriarch continued without turning his head. "Two years to cultivate enough strength to face whichever ruthless executioner the Moon Court selects. Tell me, what do you require?"

Caius opened his mouth, but before he could answer, the Patriarch pressed on, his tone uncompromising. "Training grounds. Rare elixirs. Ancient military texts. Master tutors. Weapons forged from subterranean star-iron. Anything within House Vel'drin's vast treasury is yours for the asking. Ask now."

Caius looked ahead into the cavernous abyss, his thoughts racing far beyond simple martial drills. He knew that surviving a duel against a master Shadowblade was only the first hurdle. The true nightmare would begin immediately afterward during the twelve-hour Great Hunt, where an entire realm of warlords, assassins, and blood-feud clans would hunt him down.

To survive that slaughter, a single sword style or defensive stance would never be enough. He needed to master every combat art available: assassination techniques, frontline combat, archery, dual-wielding, and dirty street fighting. Beyond individual martial prowess, he needed a profound understanding of war strategy, grand tactics, troop maneuvers, terrain control, and military logistics.

Through the awakened power of his Crown Core, Caius realized he possessed a unique advantage. His upper core could act as a vast mental repository. He did not need to physically master every war treatise or complex martial form within these brief twenty-four months. Instead, he could absorb, catalog, and archive entire libraries of tactical knowledge, martial manuscripts, and historical battle records directly into the depths of his mind. So long as he recorded the knowledge now, he could slowly study, digest, and refine those arts in the future, provided he lived through the trial.

"I need access to your grand archives, your war manuals, and your master martial arts instructors," Caius said aloud, his voice steady. "I need to learn every fighting style your house commands, along with the deep strategy and tactics of subterranean war."

Old Bones chuckled softly under his breath. "Now that is a heavy appetite, kid."

The Patriarch paused, turning his stern, crimson gaze upon Caius. "You shall have complete access to our libraries and war rooms. But do not mistake knowledge for power. My son's life rests entirely upon your shoulders."

Caius met his blood-red eyes without flinching.

"I do not care that you are human," the Patriarch said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant murmur. "I do not care that you carry the blood of Cullum Macrae. Sereth chose to protect you, and now his ultimate freedom, his very survival, depends on the outcome of your duel."

"I understand," Caius replied.

"The boy is already absorbing martial concepts faster than most clan initiates I have beaten into shape," Old Bones remarked, cracking a lazy grin.

"That," the Patriarch countered coldly, "is precisely what concerns me. A fourteen-year-old human should not possess the capacity to stand before master Shadowblades, shatter high-tier silence spells, or demand war archives. His growth defies natural law, and the tribunal will be watching every move he makes."

Caius listened in silence, absorbing the gravity of his words. The Trial of Fate was no longer a distant theoretical escape clause. It was a ticking hourglass. Two years to sharpen his body, two years to archive every martial art in the Underdark, and two years to prepare for a suicidal flight through an entire civilization of hunters.

Old Bones offered a massive, theatrical yawn, stretching his arms behind his head. "Enough dramatic brooding. The kid is alive, Sereth is breathing, and we are not currently being skinned alive by executioners. I call that a successful afternoon."

The Patriarch shot him a lingering glance before looking down at Caius one last time. "Rest tonight," he said firmly. "Tomorrow, your two years truly begin."

Caius tightened his fists at his sides, saying nothing. Deep within his chest, beneath his ribs, his lower Black Core thrummed with a low, steady pulse in the darkness.

The countdown had begun.
