CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 53: THE FIRST DOMINION

  • Next Chapter

Inside the strange realm of his Crown Core, Caius once again stood upon the circular stone courtyard. The vast, silent sea surrounding the isolated island lay motionless beneath a starless sky, its dark waters reflecting the ancient temple where nine empty sockets sat carved into the spiral altar. But Caius had not entered his inner domain to study the ruins. He had come to master a lethal new art.

Across the stone ring, the spiritual manifestation of the Arachne Princess watched him. Her form remained unchanged from their prior encounters: a towering hybrid figure possessing two humanoid arms wielding curved blades, four skeletal rear limbs protruding like scythes from her back, and four burning eyes fixed on him with cold, unyielding malice. Whatever remnant of her soul was trapped inside the Crown Core remembered her death, ensuring that every visit to the inner realm began with immediate, violent hostility.

Caius stepped into the central circle, and the princess surged forward instantly. Her dual blades swept through the air while her four rear limbs lashed out from multiple angles. Caius shifted his balance, slipping past the primary strike before retreating toward a patch of shadow cast by the temple's outer wall.

He was attempting to put Old Bones's teachings into practice. Shadow Steps was easily the most complex movement art he had ever encountered, requiring his internal mana to merge with environmental darkness so his physical form could slide through ambient shadows rather than traverse open ground.

Circulating his Black Core mana down into his foot, Caius activated Shadow Anchor. For a split second, his body lost its solid weight. His silhouette stretched across the floor like liquid ink before reassembling a dozen paces away. But as he turned to reposition, he immediately hit a critical limitation.

The Crown Core realm contained almost no dark corners. Although the temple cast a few shallow shadows, most of the courtyard was bathed in the strange, ambient illumination of his inner world. The available shadows were sparse and disconnected, severely limiting his avenues of movement.

The Arachne Princess noticed the weakness immediately. Her four eyes locked onto the few shaded spots across the floor. As Caius prepared to anchor himself into another shadow, golden threads shot across the ground, weaving a restrictive web around his target location before he even arrived. Caius aborted the jump, but another web snapped outward, catching his boot. He twisted violently, tearing the thread free, but a curved blade grazed his ribs, leaving a burning trail of pain across his torso.

He retreated several paces, blocking another flurry of strikes before breaking combat entirely. The princess halted, circling him with quiet, predatory grace.

Caius backed away, catching his breath while analyzing the flaw. Shadow Steps was fundamentally reliant on darkness; without an abundant shadow medium, his movements were completely predictable.

What if I simply create the darkness myself? he thought.

He attempted to push raw Black Core mana directly into the environment, but the energy resisted, snapping back into his meridians. His Black Core was a power reservoir, not a spatial tool. Then he remembered the fundamental mechanism of his newly awakened Crown Core: the Crown Core was the mind that assigned intent, while the Black Core was the engine that supplied the fuel.

Closing his eyes, Caius cleared his mind and focused on a single, absolute concept: Darkness.

His Crown Core hummed in response, establishing the structural intent before drawing upon the Black Core below. Dark mana surged upward and spilled out through his boots, manifesting a localized, midnight-black patch of shadow upon the granite floor.

Caius activated Shadow Anchor, sliding into the newly formed shadow and emerging behind the monster. It worked—yet the patch was still too small. The princess adapted instantly, surrounding the single dark spot with golden threads and forcing Caius to narrowly dodge another lethal swipe.

Small patches were not enough. He needed absolute control over the space.

Standing tall, Caius reached directly into the center of his Crown Core with an unyielding command: Absolute Darkness.

The Crown Core flared, channeling a massive surge from his Black Core. Dense, ink-like mana exploded outward from his body, expanding five, ten, twenty meters in a heartbeat. A perfect sphere of pitch-black darkness swallowed the entire courtyard, devouring the temple light, the stone floor, and the surrounding sky.

Inside the twenty-meter realm of darkness, the Arachne Princess froze, her four eyes wide with sudden disorientation. She unleashed a frantic wave of golden threads in every direction, attempting to blind-sweep the area, but Caius had already vanished into the medium.

With the entire domain submerged in shadow, Shadow Steps was no longer a restrictive art—it was a natural extension of his existence. Caius dissolved into dark mist, his body slipping through the void without weight, friction, or sound. He emerged behind the princess, delivered a swift slash, and dissolved back into the gloom before her counterstrike could land. He moved above her webs, behind her blades, and through her guard, striking from every angle at will.

After ten breaths, however, a sharp wave of exhaustion hit Caius's meridians. The Black Core was draining rapidly to maintain the spatial distortion. Caius released the technique, letting the dark sphere collapse back into the stone floor.

He dropped to one knee, breathing heavily as his internal mana slowly recovered. Ten seconds was his absolute limit for now, but the discovery was ground-breaking. He had not merely adapted Shadow Steps to his environment; by combining the directive intent of his Crown Core with the raw manifestation of his Black Core, he had forged something far greater.

He had unknowingly created his very first Domain Skill.
