CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 50: A SECRET FOR A SECRET
The third day of Caius's confinement passed in relative quiet beneath the azure illumination of the cavern crystals.
Morning meditation, physical meridian circulation, and another long session with wooden blades had established a structured rhythm to his house arrest. By afternoon, Caius had grown accustomed to the strange monotony inside the modest abode. There was little to do except eat, train, meditate, and observe his surroundings.
However, Caius was preoccupied with the breakthrough he had made the previous night.
The Arachne Thread Arts.
More importantly, he wanted to determine whether the technique could be projected into the physical world through his real body, and how effective it would be when deployed against a master assassin.
Old Bones seemed like the ultimate subject to test his theory.
The old assassin was resting in his usual spot beneath the shade of the cavern wall, his back propped against the rough stone and his eyes closed. He appeared completely asleep, but Caius had already learned that appearances were deceiving. The old man noticed every breath, every footstep, and every shift in the air.
Caius stepped into the center of the courtyard and drew his wooden practice blades.
He had no intention of revealing the true, lethal capacity of the technique. The black threads he had forged within his Crown Core could do far more than restrict movement; if he infused them with destructive intent and heavy Black Core energy, they could corrode armor and devour flesh.
He would not unleash that level of power here.
Instead, Caius formed a microscopic, highly condensed thread of intent within his crown point: Slow.
His Crown Core processed the command, extending a subtle bridge down to his lower dantian. His Black Core responded immediately, releasing a minute, almost imperceptible whisper of dark mana through his meridians and out through his boots into the stone floor.
A single black thread, thin as a strand of silk, flickered across the ground near Old Bones before vanishing into the granite dust.
Caius watched intently.
Old Bones remained completely still, but one of his bloodshot eyes cracked open.
Caius immediately dropped into the opening stance of the Umbral Twin-Edge.
Old Bones uncoiled himself from the stone wall with a slow stretch, walked over to the training rack, and picked up his wooden sword and knife. Neither spoke a word. The unspoken agreement to spar was already understood.
Old Bones moved.
The spar began instantly, the old man surging forward with effortless, economical grace. Caius activated Inner Sight, tracking the flow of internal energy through Old Bones's meridians. The old assassin's wooden sword came sweeping toward Caius's shoulder, while his wooden knife stayed low, waiting to capitalize on any defensive gap.
Caius raised his wooden blade to meet the primary strike.
The sword met his guard with a sharp crack.
The knife followed immediately, darting toward his midsection.
Caius shifted his weight and released another brief, hairline burst of black thread across the stone.
The black strand brushed against the sole of Old Bones's lead boot for a fraction of a second.
The old assassin's movement altered for an imperceptible instant. It was a micro-stutter in his momentum, lasting less than a hundredth of a second, but Caius caught it. The tiny interruption caused Old Bones's foot to drag slightly during his weight shift.
That fractional delay was all Caius needed. He redirected the wooden knife with his off-hand blade and smoothly parried the incoming sword strike.
Old Bones executed a rapid backstep, his expression remaining entirely calm.
They continued their exchange. Caius deployed the technique sparingly, never allowing the black threads to linger or solidify into a visible web. A micro-burst here, a faint strand there. He kept the mana output so low that the technique manifested as nothing more than a faint, localized drag in the surrounding air.

Yet something strange began happening to the flow of the duel.
Every time Old Bones initiated a flawless angle, Caius was somehow already in position to intercept it. A sharp strike aimed at Caius's ribs suddenly lost its explosive acceleration halfway through its arc. A low thrust toward his throat arrived a fraction of a second late. A sweeping attack that should have forced Caius onto his back foot arrived off-balance, allowing Caius to step inside the arc and counter.
Each time, Caius's defense was waiting.
Old Bones's calm expression gradually changed, a subtle twitch appearing at the corner of his eye.
The old assassin increased his speed, his body blurring as he attempted to overwhelm the boy's senses.
Caius matched his tempo, his Black Core humming as another black thread flashed invisibly across the granite floor.
Old Bones's lead foot slowed during a pivot.
Caius blocked.
Old Bones shifted angles and struck again from the left.
Another micro-thread caught his heel. Another tiny interruption.
Caius parried cleanly.
Old Bones stepped back sharply, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. For several long breaths, neither moved.
Suddenly, Old Bones drove forward with double his previous force.
Caius barely caught the first heavy blow, his wrists absorbing a jarring impact. The second strike whipped in from his blind spot, but Caius shifted his weight and blocked it with the flat of his knife.
The third strike was a high-speed executioner thrust that should have shattered Caius's guard entirely. Instead, Old Bones's footwork lost its driving power at the critical moment of extension, his lead boot dragging as if caught in invisible mud.
Caius stepped aside easily and redirected the wooden blade harmlessly into the empty air.
Old Bones stopped dead in his tracks.
His face had become noticeably irritated. He lowered his wooden knife, his red eyes glaring directly at Caius.
Caius lowered his weapons slightly, maintaining a calm demeanor.
Old Bones raised his wooden sword, pointing the blunt tip straight at Caius's chest. "How?"
Caius blinked innocently. "How what?"
"You keep stopping my attacks," Old Bones said, his voice flat and annoyed. "My footing feels off every time I enter your range, as if the ground itself is fighting my weight."
Caius considered his response carefully. He could not reveal the Crown Core, the nine circles in his inner realm, or the lingering spirit of the female Arachne Princess. Nor could he explain the true nature of intent threads.
So Caius decided to rely on a skill he had perfected during his time on the run: crafting a believable half-truth.
"Teach me a secret skill, and I'll trade you the explanation," Caius offered.
Old Bones stared at him for several moments, his sharp gaze searching the boy's face for any hint of mockery. Then a slow, crooked grin broke beneath his gray beard.
"Fine," the old man grunted, lowering his sword. "But you tell me exactly what you're doing to my balance."
Caius smiled faintly. "I learned how to manipulate mana like threads."
Old Bones raised a gray eyebrow. "Threads?"
Caius nodded. "I got the idea from fighting the Arachne in the upper caverns."
That part was not a lie; he was simply omitting the details of his internal crown domain.
"I condense tiny strands of black mana and project them across the floor around an enemy's feet," Caius explained smoothly. "If I place them correctly, the residual energy creates subtle friction against their physical movement."
Old Bones studied him intently. "You can see and shape ambient mana with that level of precise geometry?"
Caius nodded. "You can see mana too, right?"
Old Bones paused. "A bit."
Caius smiled. "Then look at my hand."
He extended his right index finger. Tapping into a tiny fraction of his lower dantian, he projected a thin, hair-like strand of black mana into the air. He deliberately kept the thread weak and simple, letting it glide across the stone floor toward Old Bones's boot.
Old Bones watched the black strand with absolute focus, his red eyes tracking the strange, hair-thin line as it curled around his foot.
The old assassin raised his own hand, attempting to reproduce the technique. He channeled a stream of his dark elf mana down to his fingertips, trying to condense it into a solid thread.
The gray energy flickered, expanded into a loose cloud, and dissipated instantly into the air.
Old Bones tried again, focusing his intent, but his mana refused to hold a rigid thread structure. Without the Crown Core's architectural framework to assign rule-based intent to the energy, raw mana naturally dispersed upon leaving the body.
Old Bones frowned deeply, staring at his empty hand.
Caius struggled to keep a completely straight face.
Old Bones looked up, catching the faint glint in the boy's eyes. "It doesn't work."
Caius shrugged lightly. "Maybe because I'm a genius?"
Old Bones stared at him with an unblinking gaze. Caius maintained his most serious, solemn expression.
The old assassin finally let out a low, gravelly chuckle. "So you're saying I can't learn this because my control isn't absurd enough?"
Caius nodded gravely.
"Well, a promise is a promise," Old Bones said, lowering his hand. "You traded your secret."
He turned toward the weapon rack and returned his practice weapons to their slots.
"I'll teach you Shadow Steps," Old Bones announced, looking back over his narrow shoulder.
Caius's eyes sharpened with immediate interest. "Shadow Steps?"
"The stepping art you're using right now is just a low-level Vel'drin fundamental," Old Bones said, a rare note of authority touching his tone. "Shadow Steps is an advanced executioner technique. It allows you to displace your body through ambient shadows without leaving a physical footprint or a mana signature."
Caius tightened his grip around his wooden shortsword, excitement stirring in his chest.
Old Bones walked toward his spot against the cavern wall. "The lesson begins tomorrow morning. Get some rest."
Caius nodded.
For the first time that day, Old Bones looked genuinely pleased. He had intended to pass down his high-level techniques eventually, but trading secrets with the boy had given the lesson an entirely different weight.
And Caius had successfully protected the secret of his Crown Core while securing an elite movement art in the process. Tomorrow, his true training as an assassin would begin.
