CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 43: THE ESSENCE CORE

The crossroads remained quiet after the Shadowblades moved farther ahead, their dark silhouettes vanishing into the gloom of the subterranean highway. For the moment, Caius and Sereth had been left alone in the stillness of the cavern.

Sereth looked toward the narrow passages leading into the ancestral territories of the noble houses. His expression remained calm, but his eyes carried the sharp caution of someone who understood how quickly circumstances could change beneath the mountain.

"Absorb your cores now."

Caius looked at him, surprised. "Now?"

"You may not have another opportunity." Sereth's gaze shifted toward the darkness beyond the chamber. "Once we reach the clan, you will be watched. Perhaps not openly. Perhaps not even by those traveling with us. But House Vel'drin will have questions about you, and other houses will have questions as well."

Caius understood immediately. He had already seen how carefully the dark elves observed him, noting every breath and movement.

"If they discover what you are doing, you may never have the privacy required to cultivate properly."

Caius reached into his belongings and removed the beast core he had taken from the fallen Arachne Princess. The crystal was large enough to fit comfortably within his palm, heavy and cold to the touch. Crimson energy moved slowly beneath its faceted surface, pulsing with the turbulent remnants of the monstrous creature's power.

Caius studied the glowing orb for a moment before cross-legging himself on the flat stone.

Sereth remained nearby, standing guard as his shadow stretched across the cavern floor.

Caius closed his eyes, tuned out the faint echoes of dripping water, and began the internal cultivation process he had practiced repeatedly. His breathing slowed to a deep, rhythmic cadence: three short intakes of cool air, followed by a long, controlled release.

With every breath, his consciousness descended toward his lower abdomen. His internal mana began circulating through the primary conduits running along his spine and limbs. Deep within his center, the Black Core responded, stirring from its resting state and beginning to rotate in a slow, counter-clockwise vortex.

Caius pressed his thumbs against the surface of the beast core. He did not allow the foreign beast energy to rush blindly into his body. Instead, he channeled tiny, needle-thin threads of black mana out through his palms, puncturing the outer shell of the crimson core. He drew the raw, violent power inward while simultaneously accelerating the internal rotation of his own black mana.

The two energies collided in his forearm meridians.

For a moment, his entire body tightened as his muscles locked in agony. The raw beast energy was thick with acidic venom, instinctual rage, and the broken residual will of the dead monster.

Then the internal friction began.

As the opposing forces ground against one another, the Black Flame ignited within his pathways. It was not an ordinary flame. It possessed no physical heat, yet Caius felt it consuming something deep inside the foreign energy. The ancestral instincts of the monster, the lingering echoes of its malice, and the corrosive impurities embedded within its power were torn apart and burned away in an agonizing, ice-cold combustion.

Only the pure, unadulterated mana survived the fire.

The purified energy, now stripped of its crimson color and transformed into dense, liquid mana, continued inward along his central pathways. His Black Core absorbed the stream like a starving well.

The process was violent, but rigidly controlled. Caius kept his focus ironclad, steering every drop of energy into the central vortex. He felt the density of his core increasing second by second, compressing under immense pressure.

Then something changed.

A suffocating pressure appeared deep inside his abdomen.

Caius's breathing stopped completely. The sensation was unlike anything he had experienced during his previous cultivation sessions. It felt as though something at the absolute center of his Black Core was beginning to crack under the weight of the absorbed power.

Not breaking apart, but changing.

His meridians suddenly opened twice as wide, stretching to their absolute limits. Black mana surged through pathways that had never carried that much volume before, burning through blockages and widening the channels. The darkness spread through his entire body, flowing from the core into his main meridians, flooding his muscles, bones, and nerves, before cycling back toward the center in a closed loop.

Sereth's eyes narrowed. Utilizing his honed sensory sight, he saw Caius's mana core directly for the first time.

The Black Core was completely unlike any core Sereth had encountered during his centuries of life among the dark elves. There was no familiar elemental color, no radiant glow of ice or fire, and no recognizable magical affinity. It was absolute darkness condensed into a solid, heavy sphere that seemed to pull the ambient light of the cavern toward itself.

Then the internal pressure increased to a fever pitch.

Caius felt as though his entire core was about to undergo some fundamental transformation, evolving into something beyond a standard core.

The Black Core seemed to pulse once, a heavy thud that resonated through his skeleton. A wave of dark mana expanded outward through his meridians, painting his skin in faint, shadowy veins.

Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, everything stopped.

The expanding darkness vanished into his pores. The Black Core became quiet again, its surface smooth and dormant once more.

Caius remained still for several breaths, settling his frantic heart rate and steadying his internal circulation.

Sereth continued watching him, his expression unreadable. He had seen enough throughout his long life to know that whatever had happened inside Caius's body was far from normal. But he did not ask, respecting the unspoken boundaries of a cultivator's secrets.

Eventually, Caius opened his eyes. The world appeared sharper, clearer to his senses. He looked down at the remaining object in his possession: the small, mysterious black bead he had carved from the crown of the Arachne Princess's head.

He turned it between his fingers. It remained cold, lightless, and completely inert.

"Sereth."

"What?"

"I want to absorb this."

Sereth's calm expression changed immediately, a sharp frown cutting across his features. "No."

Caius looked up at him. "It may be dangerous."

"What is it?"

"An Arachne Essence Core," Sereth said sternly.

Caius remembered the moment he had removed it from the monster's skull. Even now, holding it against his bare skin, there was no sensation of mana radiating from the object. No heat, no cold, no pulse of power whatsoever. It felt like a plain, polished pebble, and that total absence of energy made it all the more unsettling.

"Dark elf scholars have studied them for generations," Sereth explained, his voice dropping into a grave tone. "Some of our mages use them as enhancement stones for high-grade magical weapons. They can strengthen certain enchantments and improve the structural stability of weapons that contain them."

Caius turned the bead over in his palm. "But?"

Sereth's eyes narrowed into slits. "I have never heard of anyone successfully absorbing one directly into their body."

Caius remained silent, staring at the small black sphere.

"That does not mean it cannot be done," Sereth added, stepping closer. "It means we do not know what will happen if you try."

Sereth's voice became far more serious than it had been during the fight. "You may die."

"I know."

"You could destroy your meridians, tearing your pathways beyond repair."

"I know."

"You could damage your Black Core beyond recovery, leaving yourself a cripple."

Caius closed his fingers tightly around the bead, feeling its unyielding surface against his palm. He remembered the strange sensation from moments earlier, the deep internal pulse that felt as if something within him was waiting to break its shell.

"I still want to try."

Sereth watched him for several long moments, searching the boy's eyes for hesitation. Finding none, he slowly took a step back and did not stop him.

Caius placed the Arachne Essence Core on the stone directly before his crossed legs. He closed his eyes and entered his meditative position once again.

His breathing slowed until his chest barely moved. His consciousness turned completely inward, severing all awareness of the outside cavern.

The Black Core waited within the darkness of his lower abdomen, dense and steady.

Caius carefully extended a thin, focused thread of his black mana out through his body, guiding it down into the strange bead resting on the floor.

The moment his mana touched the object, he felt a staggering difference.

This was nothing like a beast core. There was no wild, erratic energy pressing against his consciousness. There was no furious beast instinct clawing at his mind, nor any volatile elemental force trying to resist his absorption.

Instead, the Essence Core felt completely sealed, as though protected by an ancient, unbreakable vault. Something immensely dense was hidden deep inside its center, locked away behind layers of inert crystal.

Caius concentrated every drop of his willpower. He pushed more of his Black Core's energy out, wrapping thick bands of black mana around the Essence Core, searching relentlessly for a microscopic seam or fissure to breach the seal.

Then, as his mana pressed into the bead's surface, he felt something deep within himself respond.

The sensation did not come from his meridians, nor from the surface of his core. It came from somewhere far deeper, from the absolute center of his Black Core.

Caius froze internally.

There was another presence inside his core, buried beneath layers of darkness. Something that had been dormant for an eternity. Something ancient, vast, and terrifyingly cold.

His breathing became heavy and ragged as he concentrated all his awareness on that central point.

The Black Core opened.

Not physically, but conceptually. The dense darkness surrounding his core seemed to fold inward upon itself like a collapsing star, revealing a hidden, abyssal depth at its true center.

A second power awakened.

Caius's entire body trembled violently. His meridians suddenly burst wide open as an enormous, suffocating pressure passed through his pathways. The sensation was utterly overwhelming, transcending physical pain.

For one brief, blinding moment, Caius felt as though his consciousness had expanded beyond his physical vessel, spanning the cavern, the surrounding tunnels, and the deep roots of the mountain itself.

Then, in the blink of an eye, the ancient power vanished.

The dormant presence folded back into the depths of his center, its seal snapping shut once more.

The cavern around them suddenly shook violently.

A deep rumble echoed through the earth. Small stones and dust fell from the high ceiling, splashing into the dark pools nearby. The ground beneath Caius trembled for several seconds, vibrating with a heavy frequency before settling back into absolute, motionless quiet.
