CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 233: THE MONOLITH OF VEYUUN
Caius followed the gatekeeper down a winding, spiral flight of stairs cut directly into living rock, descending into a subterranean chamber hidden deep beneath the modest stone hut. At the absolute center of the dark, vaulting sanctum stood a massive, perfectly smooth obsidian pillar that seemed to absorb the meager light cast by their torches. According to the old man, this was an ancient Monolith forged eons ago by the lost Veyuun Sect, serving as a sacred repository of forgotten martial knowledge, ancient memories, and primordial elemental paths designed to thoroughly test a cultivator and potentially grant the ultimate technique known as Wujin Yihe Dao, the Final Path of Unity.
The old man watched intently with bated breath as Caius approached the towering dark stone, desperately hoping to see the Monolith’s latent qi-veins ignite with blazing color or its faintly glowing runic scripts awaken from their slumber to open the elemental trials of Wind, Fire, Earth, Water, and Spirit.
Yet, to their profound astonishment, Caius found nothing.
To his piercing gaze, the Monolith remained completely, stubbornly inert, standing as a cold, dead slab of silent, light-devouring stone. He felt no spiritual resonance, saw no spectral manifestations shimmering in the air, and perceived no hidden vortex of energy waiting beneath its glassy surface.
The old man let out a long, shuddering sigh of deep disappointment. "It seems the ancient inheritance does not choose you today," the elder murmured, sadly shaking his head as his white hair brushed his shoulders. "By the absolute, unyielding rules of our sect, if a wanderer cannot perceive the Monolith and the profound secrets woven into its frame, I cannot grant the trials nor teach the Wujin Yihe Dao. You walk a completely different path, boy."
Though Caius remained entirely unbothered by the failed trial, his face remaining as cold as winter iron, he watched closely as the old man reached deep into his tattered robes and pulled out two distinct items: an ancient bronze token engraved with a swirling, intricate crest and a small, flickering crystal slate.
"Take these instead," the old man said, holding them out with a trembling palm. "This is a partial star map. It does not show the whole expanse of the Abyss, but it charts several immediate, dangerous sectors lying just beyond this threshold. And this token belongs to the Veyuun Sect."
Caius took the items, his fingers testing the smooth, heavy weight of the ancient bronze token.
"Our sect's surviving members are few, scattered thinly across the lonely void," the old man explained softly, his eyes heavy with memory. "However, the Veyuun Sect possesses an ancient legacy of archives detailing thousands of forgotten gates, uncharted sectors, and obscure races. If you encounter any of my remaining brethren out in the dark, show them this token without hesitation. Their hidden knowledge may hold the vital key to tracking the Mordrakh and finding your mother."
Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
"I understand," Caius replied, his voice steady as he stored the partial star map and the token securely into his inner storage domain. "Thank you."
The old man turned on his heel and led Caius back up the stone stairs to the surface, stepping directly before the colossal, fifty-foot black iron gate. Placing his withered, trembling hand against the ancient metal surface, the gatekeeper channeled a concentrated pulse of pale, forgotten energy deep into the complex runic seals.
With a deafening, thunderous roar of grinding metal and heavy, rattling chains, the massive black doors slowly parted. A howling tempest of dark mist, violent spatial distortion, and raw abyssal winds surged instantly through the opening, swallowing the canyon in an eerie, deafening shriek.
Adjusting his deep dark hood securely over his head, Caius looked out into the wild, chaotic vortex raging beyond the threshold. Without a single moment of hesitation, he stepped forward, crossing the boundary gate into the uncharted, perilous depths of the Abyss.
As the massive black gate ground shut with a finality that echoed through the bones, sealing the tempest of dark mist once more, the canyon returned to its heavy, ancient silence. The old man stood by the quiet stream for a long, meditative moment, watching the sealed runic doors with a solemn gaze. Slowly, he reached up into empty air, his withered fingers tearing viciously through space itself to rip open a shimmering, dark violet rift.
Kneeling before the jagged tear in reality, the old man lowered his head humbly to the damp earth. From deep within the infinite void beyond the rift, a crushing, primordial presence pressed down upon the canyon, ancient and overwhelming enough to make the surrounding mountain walls tremble to their core.
"My Lord," the old man whispered reverently into the swirling darkness of the rift. "The new master of the Spiral Temple has successfully passed through the threshold."
A deep, bone-rattling pulse vibrated outward from the absolute darkness beyond. "Speak. What did the Monolith reveal of him?"
"I could read nothing of his true fate, My Lord," the old man confessed, his voice laced with faint, unmistakable unease. "He is entirely obscured, hidden behind a thick, impenetrable wall of fog. The Monolith remained stubbornly silent in his presence. Yet, when I looked closer into the depths of his aura, I saw no linear fate at all, only a tangled web of threads. Countless, interwoven spatial threads binding his very existence. He is a complete anomaly."
The primordial entity remained entirely silent for a long, tense moment, digesting the heavy report.
"A weaver of unseen paths..." the disembodied voice echoed softly from the void, remarkably devoid of surprise. "You have fulfilled your duty faithfully, gatekeeper. Leave him be."
With a sharp flick of darkness, the spatial rift snapped shut with a thunderous crack, leaving the old man standing alone beside his quiet stone hut once more.
Miles away, surging forward through the chaotic, churning ocean of the Abyss, Caius moved with relentless speed, entirely unaware of the unseen, cosmic gaze locking onto his position. Deep within his secure storage domain, the ancient Veyuun Sect token suddenly pulsed with a microscopic, imperceptible resonance—a latent beacon now tracked by the terrifying primordial entity far above the realm.
Far beyond the swirling clouds of the Abyss, two immense, burning cosmic eyes opened slowly within the endless void, silently fixing their predatory sight upon the faint, distant spark of the token moving through the dark mist.
The ancient presence watched in silence, waiting to see what this unpredictable anomaly would bring to the uncharted gates, watching to determine whether the new owner of the temple would ultimately walk the path of absolute destruction, ruthless slaughter, or cold order.
