CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 231: THE FISHERMAN AT THE GATE

Deep within the swirling gray fog of the Abyss, Caius moved with silent, deliberate grace. He had shed all traces of his royal regalia. There was no grand mantle, no golden trim, and no heraldry declaring him a prince or sovereign. Instead, he wore a simple, unadorned black hooded cloak over lightweight, matte-black obsidian armor. It was engineered to be virtually indestructible while deadening all light and reflection. Slung low at his waist were his twin short swords, the Sabre Lightning Fangs, built for lethal, close-quarters execution. He looked like an anonymous rogue or a wandering mercenary, entirely devoid of imperial pretension.

He descended deeper into a dark, sprawling canyon whose towering walls were completely carpeted in thick, damp moss. The ambient air was heavy with ancient moisture and the faint scent of copper.

Caius paused, his violet eyes flashing as he cast Far Sight to sweep the canyon floor. His spatial perception stretched outward across hundreds of yards, probing every shadow and alcove. Nothing moved. There were no immediate mana signatures, no lurking beasts, and no spatial traps.

Yet, as he took another step forward, the dim light revealed what his sensory sweep had missed as non-living terrain: white, bone-dry skulls and ancient skeletons half-buried beneath the moss. They lay scattered in grim clusters, clad in heavy, unrecognizable armor from an era long forgotten, their weapons rusted into dust.

Instantly alert, Caius melted into the dark rock face using Shadow Step, merging completely with the surrounding shadows as an invisible phantom. Slinking further down the canyon, a massive shape loomed out of the fog. A colossal black iron gate, towering nearly fifty feet high, blocked the passage forward, its surface covered in sealed runic engravings. But what caught Caius’s attention was not the gate itself, but rather the modest stone hut built right beside the entrance.

A quiet, crystal-clear stream trickled past the hut's door. Sitting on a smooth rock by the water was an old man wearing a worn, frayed straw hat. His head was nodding gently against his chest, fast asleep, holding a crude bamboo fishing pole over the slow-moving current.

Caius remained merged within the dark stone, holding his breath and keeping his mana completely suppressed.

Without warning, the old man’s eyes slowly opened. He didn't look around aimlessly; his gaze locked with terrifying precision onto the exact patch of shadow where Caius was hidden.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

"You're here," the old man said softly, his voice dry like rustling leaves.

Caius froze. Realizing his concealment was entirely meaningless, he dissolved the Shadow Step and materialized on the path, his hand resting near the hilt of his short blade.

"Huh?" Caius murmured, his sharp brow furrowing in genuine shock. "You know me?"

The old man let out a small, rasping chuckle, keeping his line in the water.

"Of course I do. I can see the ancient spiral temple resting inside your mind sea."

A cold jolt ran through Caius’s chest. The existence of the spiral temple within his inner realm was an absolute secret, something no mortal or spell should have been able to peer into so effortlessly. Yet, suppressing his shock, Caius straightened his back and walked bravely toward the stream, his violet-gold eyes locked onto the elder.

The old man slowly stood up, reeling in his empty fishing line and setting the rod against the stone wall. He gestured casually toward the open door of the hut with a crooked finger.

"Come, come," the old man said with a warm, mysterious smile. "Step inside. I will brew a pot of tea."

Caius stepped through the low doorway into a sparse, impeccably clean wooden room. In the center sat a heavy cast-iron kettle resting over a small charcoal brazier, exhaling a gentle, rhythmic hiss as the water simmered. The old man knelt gracefully beside the hearth, taking up a bamboo scoop with fluid, deliberate precision. Every motion was unhurried, minimalist, and deeply meditative, executed with a serene, ancient ceremonial rhythm as he handled the loose leaves and measured the hot water with absolute economy of movement.

As the old man continued to prepare the brew, Caius watched his form closely. Even without invoking his sight arts, a primal warning bell rang deep within Caius's instincts. Despite looking like an ordinary, frail hermit, the old man moved with a terrifyingly flawless equilibrium. He was a master of such unfathomable, towering magnitude that Caius could not even measure the boundaries of his strength.

Curiosity and caution warring within him, Caius activated the Eye of the Loom. His vision shifted, piercing past the physical plane to inspect the old man's internal circulation and energy architecture.

Caius's breath caught in his throat.

Where a normal practitioner possessed a single mana core, and even apex powerhouses held mutated or dual structures, Caius saw five colossal pillars. Five distinct, infinite cores of raw, terrifying power anchored deep within the elder's spiritual vessel like foundational monoliths holding up the heavens.

The old man paused, his hand hovering over the ceramic teapot. Without looking up, a faint, knowing smile touched the corners of his weathered lips.

"An intriguing technique," the old man murmured softly. "When you cross the gate, be discreet with that sight."

Without missing a beat, the old man continued his preparation. He gently swirled the ceramic pot, poured the steaming tea into a small, unglazed cup with precise, flawless grace, and slid it across the low wooden table toward Caius, the rich aroma of earthy leaves filling the quiet room as the steam curled upward.
