CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 149: THE DEATH BOWL

The ground trembled under the march of fifty thousand Solarian soldiers. At the forefront rode Duke Alban, flanked by his one thousand elite, heavy-armored Knights of the Sun. Further back, positioned on an elevated rocky rise overlooking the mouth of the valley, King Alden watched from the rear, flanked by his five hundred royal elite knights whose polished silver plate gleamed like a wall of sunlight. They had crossed the border into the Shattered Steppes expecting immediate, bloody skirmishes with roving warbands, yet for seven straight days, they met only silence.

The paths through the rough, rocky terrain were completely clear, practically inviting them deeper into the central steppes toward the towering black peaks of the iron hills.

On the seventh afternoon, the grand army halted at the mouth of a massive, ancient landform. Before them lay a vast, sunken amphitheater of jagged stone and dark earth, flanked on both sides by steep, impassable cliffs. It was a natural bottleneck, a funnel of slaughter.

Duke Alban pulled his rein, eyeing his map before looking up at the high ridge beyond the valley. Nestled firmly against the obsidian mountains sat the looming, terrifying shadow of the Black Granite Citadel.

"The Death Bowl," Duke Alban muttered to his chief knight commander beside him, his voice laced with grim awe. "That brat really knows where to build his citadel. He knew we would have no choice but to march straight down the throat of this valley."

Suddenly, the heavy iron gates of the Citadel groaned open.

A massive, chaotic horde spilled out into the bowl first. It was not the disciplined legion from the scout reports, but a raw, frantic wave of twenty thousand wild Orcs, tribal fodder gathered from across the steppes. Their ranks were messy, their armor mismatched. Orc chieftains bellowed in their guttural tongue, swinging heavy clubs to beat their subordinates into rough, makeshift lines.

Then, the true terror emerged.

Marching in terrifying, absolute synchronicity behind the chaotic horde came the First Obsidian Legion, the ten thousand-strong Quick-Reaction Force. Clad in pitch-black obsidian plate, their weapons gleamed like obsidian glass under the pale sun.

At the head of the ridge, mounted atop a towering shadow-beast, appeared Caius. His dark cloak snapped in the valley wind, his cold, violet-laced eyes staring down at the fifty thousand human invaders. Beside him shuffled Old Bones, his dark robes swirling with newfound, dense shadow mana.

Duke Alban rode forward a few paces, drawing his silver broadsword and channeling his voice with light mana so it echoed through the entire valley.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

"Sovereign of the Steppes!" Duke Alban shouted, his voice ringing with aristocratic pride. "You stand surrounded in your own pit! Look at the might of the Solarian Kingdom, fifty thousand steel-clad soldiers, backed by the Holy Crown! Throw down your weapons, strip off your false title, and surrender yourself to the King's justice, and we may spare the lives of your miserable rabble! Stand against us, and we will turn this valley into your tomb!"

High on the ridge, Caius didn't even bother to answer. Instead, he simply tilted his head to the chief Orc shaman standing beside the vanguard.

The shaman stepped forward, raising his skull-topped staff, his voice booming across the valley like cracking thunder.

"LOK-RAR! Prove your strength!" the shaman bellowed to the twenty thousand wild Orcs in the pit. "The weak will be purged today! The victors shall shed their primitive rags and be elevated to the First Obsidian Legion! BECOME IMMORTAL!"

The effect was instantaneous.

The twenty thousand wild Orcs didn't flinch at the human army's overwhelming numbers. Their eyes turned blood-red as they looked toward the undead Orc puppets standing in the Obsidian Legion, warriors endowed with unholy, ultimate power. They craved that strength more than life itself.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Twenty thousand Orcs began wildly pounding their weapons against their wooden and iron shields in a deafening, hypnotic rhythm. A guttural, roaring war chant tore from their throats, shaking the very dust from the surrounding cliffs:

"BLOOD FOR POWER! DEATH FOR THE CROWN! TO THE VICTOR, IMMORTALITY! TO THE VICTOR, IMMORTALITY!"

"ATTACK!" the chieftains screamed.

With a collective, fanatical roar, twenty thousand Orcs charged down the slope like a tidal wave of green flesh and jagged steel, flinging themselves recklessly against the fifty thousand-strong Solarian army.

Standing beside Caius on the high ridge, Old Bones watched the suicidal, frantic madness of the wild Orc horde in utter astonishment.

"My Lord," Old Bones whispered, his pale eyes wide as he adjusted his robes. "What drives these wild beasts to such complete, fanatical madness? They know most of them will die against a fifty thousand-man phalanx."

Caius offered a faint, cold smile, his gaze fixed on the battlefield below.

"The desire for power and battle," Caius answered smoothly. "That is the only thing the Orcs truly love, Old Bones. They want to get stronger, and they want to fight. Everything else, wealth, peace, survival, is completely secondary."

Caius paused, looking down at the red-eyed berserkers charging toward the human lines, before adding softly, "And I offer them three things: power, battle, and immortality. An endless cycle of power and battle."

Old Bones stared at the eighteen-year-old youth standing calmly beside him. In his three centuries of life, the old elf had served grand archmagi and dark lords, but none possessed this chilling, effortless grasp of mortal psychology. This boy understood how to weaponize the darkest desires of entire races with surgical precision.

Eighteen years old... Old Bones thought, a shudder of genuine reverence running down his spine. Yet he possesses a mind more terrifyingly wise and ruthless than the ancient monsters sitting on the thrones of the Dark Elf Kingdom.

Below them, the green wave crashed into the Solarian shield wall with a deafening crash, and the bloodbath of the Death Bowl officially began.
