CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 147: THE SUBTERRANEAN HATCHERY
Deep beneath the Black Granite Citadel, far below the training grounds and obsidian armories, lay a newly constructed subterranean vault. The air here was damp, cold, and heavy with the scent of raw mana and iron. Luminescent purple moss clung to the basalt walls, casting an eerie, shifting glow over a vast circular chamber lined with thick, glistening spider silk.
Caius walked along the stone catwalk, his footsteps light and silent. Beside him, draped in his usual dark robes, shuffled Old Bones.
At the center of the chamber rested three massive, female Arachnes. Their dark, chitinous lower bodies were coiled comfortably within massive webbed nests, their human torsos breathing in slow, rhythmic docility. Captured by Old Bones months prior during his shadow operations in the deep ridges before he had even pledged himself to Caius as master spy, these creatures were once ferocious subterranean horrors. Now, under the ambient pressure of the Sovereign's domain, they remained perfectly tame.
Old Bones leaned over the stone railing, his pale, ancient eyes narrowing as he observed the sleeping beasts.
"My Lord," Old Bones muttered, adjusting his sleeves. "What exactly do you intend to do with these three female Arachnes? Keeping them fed requires a small fortune in live prey every month."
Instead of answering directly, Caius paused at the edge of the catwalk. He raised his right hand, swirling his dark mana into the air. A circular, ink-black pool tore open in the space beside him, rippling with dense shadow magic.
From the depths of the black pool, a tall, imposing figure stepped onto the basalt floor.
It was a male Arachne, but unlike the monstrous subterranean beasts of the lower deeps, this creature possessed a strikingly refined humanoid upper body. Sharp, pale features, dark obsidian eyes, and eight lethal, razor-sharp chitinous legs rising from his back gave him an eerie, majestic beauty, almost identical in tier and aura to the Arachne Princess standing above in the Citadel.
Old Bones flinched, his shadow mana flaring reflexively as he stared at the newcomer. "Who... who is this? An Arachne Prince?"
The male Arachne’s head snapped toward Old Bones. His obsidian eyes flashed with cold, dangerous disdain, his mandibles clicking with a suppressed hiss. A mere elf, speaking my title so casually before my Lord? I would tear your throat out where you stand if not for His presence.
Caius let out a soft chuckle, waving his hand to calm the creature's aggression. "Do you remember the first male Arachne you captured and brought to me, Old Bones? This is him. He recently completed his first high-tier molting stage."
Old Bones gasped, his jaw nearly dropping as he looked between the humanoid Arachne and Caius. "This is that wild beast?! What in the gods' names did you feed him to force a transformation into a noble-tier form so rapidly?"
Caius reached into his inner robe and tossed a dark, heavy gem through the air. The male Arachne caught it instantly, his eyes lighting up with intense reverence as he held it close. The crystal oozed with dense, suffocating energy, a condensed shard forged from pure, refined shadow mana. Caius revealed nothing of its true origin; the existence of his Crown Core remained his deepest, most absolute secret, locked away even from his closest lieutenants.
Next, Caius pulled three more condensed dark crystals from his robes and tossed them down into the silk nests below. The three massive female Arachnes stirred instantly, their dark eyes snapping open as they caught the airborne gems with lightning speed. They greedily devoured the condensed mana shards, letting out long, satisfied clicks from their mandibles as intense shadow energy surged through their chitinous bodies, accelerating their vitality and brood-readiness tenfold.

Caius then pulled a final, smaller condensed black crystal from his tunic and tossed it casually toward Old Bones.
The master spy caught it, his breath hitching instantly. As his fingers closed around the dark gem, a wave of impossibly pure, concentrated dark energy radiated into his palm. It felt intoxicating, yet terrifying, a power so dense that his hand trembled under its weight.
"Want to try it?" Caius asked, a faint smirk playing on his lips.
Old Bones stared at the gem, his heart hammering against his ribs. "My Lord... this energy... it is purer than anything I have felt in my three centuries. But if I absorb this blindly, it will shatter my mana core into dust!"
Caius burst into a genuine, echoing laugh, his voice bouncing off the damp stone walls. "What would I do with an old fossil like you as a mind-numbed puppet? I enjoy your banter too much, Old Bones, it keeps me sane in a sea of bowing subordinates."
"Then how?" Old Bones rasped, unable to tear his eyes away from the crystal's dark pulse. "A core at my level cannot handle raw refinement of this magnitude."
"By using the Calamity Forge method," Caius replied smoothly. He reached back into his robes and pulled out a small, intricately carved black jade token, tossing it to the elf. "Read the technique I recorded inside. It is a refined, stabilized version tailored specifically for spiritual and elemental cores. Use the token to channel the crystal's energy safely."
Old Bones caught the token, holding both items tight against his chest. The Calamity Forge... he whispered, awe fighting with terror in his chest.
Caius offered a wicked, amused grin. "If you succeed, perhaps I will have to start calling you 'New Bones'."
Old Bones clutched the token tightly, his pale face solemn. "Very funny, My Lord," he muttered under his breath, though his fingers trembled with fierce ambition. He had been stuck at a frustrating cultivation bottleneck for over thirty years. The temptation to shatter his limits and ascend to the next realm was overwhelming.
Caius turned his attention back to the male Arachne standing before them.
The humanoid creature immediately stood at full attention, his chest puffing out, his eyes gleaming with fiery anticipation. His lethal chitinous legs flexed with eagerness. He was ready for the glorious command, to lead a vanguard, to butcher Caius's enemies, to conquer new territories, and to bathe his blades in the blood of the Solarian Kingdom for his beloved Lord.
Caius looked him up and down, nodding thoughtfully.
"I have a crucial mission for you," Caius commanded, pointing toward the three massive, newly energized female Arachnes resting in their webbed nests below. "Go down there and brood with them."
The male Arachne’s posture instantly froze. His mandibles twitched, his sharp chitinous legs sagging slightly. He blinked his dark, obsidian eyes, staring at Caius as if his hearing had completely failed him.
I am a noble-tier warrior! A high-grade commander! You fed me divine energy just to turn me into a... a breeder?!
Standing beside Caius, Old Bones couldn't hold it in any longer. He clutched his stomach and burst into a fit of breathless, hysterical laughter, the sound echoing loudly through the subterranean chamber.
"Ah... a truly noble duty, young prince!" Old Bones wheezed, wiping a tear from his eye as the male Arachne glared at him with absolute, murder-filled hatred. "Serve our Sovereign well!"
To complete the hatchery, Caius raised his hand toward the vaulted ceiling. Concentrating his internal power, he forged a massive, pulsing crystal of ambient dark energy, embedding it directly into the keystone of the basalt ceiling. The monolithic obsidian gem hummed with raw power, bathing the entire subterranean hall in a soft, dark purple glow. No longer would they need to hunt or feed on live mana cores, every Arachne in the chamber, present and future, would passively absorb the pure, dark energy radiated by their Sovereign's creation, growing faster and stronger without consuming a single piece of flesh.
Four months later, the damp silence of the subterranean hatchery was broken by a chorus of soft, rhythmic clicking sounds.
Inside the vast silk chambers, three massive, woven egg sacs had split open. True to nature's relentless design, each brood mother had produced a realistic clutch of over three hundred dark, translucent eggs. Nearly nine hundred miniature Arachne hatchlings scrambled across the thick webbed floors, their tiny chitinous legs flexing as they basked in the pure ambient energy radiating from the ceiling crystal under the watchful gaze of their exhausted father.
Nurtured solely on pure obsidian energy, every single hatchling carried an unblemished, hyper-evolved bloodline, the foundational vanguard of Caius’s future subterranean army.
