CHAPTER 139: THE HAND IN THE SHADOWS

The structure stood at the highest elevation of the commercial district, overlooking the broad, paved avenues of the sprawling capital.

Old Bones stood before it, his sharp eyes taking in every meticulous detail. It was a masterpiece of subterranean architecture brought into the daylight: dark basalt walls reinforced with dampening enchantments, intricate obsidian carvings of weeping willows framing the entryway, and high arched windows fitted with dark, bioluminescent glass that cast a soft, twilight-purple glow. It was constructed strictly in the traditional Nyx'ari style of the deep dark elf enclaves, modest, elegant, yet heavily fortified and completely soundproofed from the noise of the street.

The heavy ironwood door swung open smoothly, leading into a spacious room with dark timber tables, a polished granite counter, and private alcoves strategically placed to prevent eavesdropping.

Above the main entrance, a silver-edged sign swayed gently in the wind, bearing the name The Ashen Goblet.

Old Bones ran his calloused fingers over the smooth basalt frame, then turned slowly toward Caius, who stood beside him with his hands resting casually behind his back.

"Tell me what the catch is, brat," Old Bones grumbled, his voice low and suspicious as he stared at the young Sovereign. "You didn't build a prime piece of real estate in the heart of your shiny new capital out of the goodness of your heart. Not for a retired old ghost."

A smooth, calculated smile spread across Caius's face.

"Old Bones," Caius said softly, his voice dropping into a tone meant strictly for the two of them. "I want you to help me. I need you to be my hidden hand. You will be the Spy King of my kingdom. You will see every threat before it reaches my borders, know every whisper of betrayal in the high courts, and act as the swift knife in the dark to my enemies."

Old Bones raised an eyebrow, leaning against his walking stick. "And who, exactly, are we cutting down first?"

"The human realm," Caius answered instantly. His tone remained light, but his pale eyes turned as cold and unyielding as winter ice, flashing with an absolute, terrifying finality.

A flash of genuine shock crossed Old Bones's face. He knew Caius was human by blood, yet the boy spoke of his own race with a deep, silent malice, a cold, calculated hatred that ran far deeper than simple political ambition or territorial rivalry. The old assassin buried the rising question for another time, knowing better than to pry into the dark, jagged corners of Caius's mind when his aura flickered like that.

Old Bones crossed his arms over his chest, letting out a raspy snort. "Building an international shadow network from scratch... that's going to be expensive, kid. Gold, poisons, bribing corrupt border lords, establishing safehouses and dead-drops across three human kingdoms, it adds up fast. It takes more than just a fancy tavern."

"Everything will be provided," Caius answered without a second's hesitation. "Vaults of iron, gold, trade permits, and any shadow-binding resources you require from the Citadel's subterranean vaults. You will have total operational freedom."

Old Bones stared at him for a long, silent moment. He had never cared for gold, titles, or lavish living. What drove the old assassin, what had always driven him through centuries of blood and shadow, was the thrill of the hunt, the high-stakes game of life and death played in the blackest corners of the world. Caius understood this perfectly, and he had just dangled the ultimate hunt right before his eyes.

A slow, crooked grin stretched across Old Bones's scarred face, revealing sharp teeth.

"Fine," the old dark elf grunted, turning the heavy brass key in the lock of The Ashen Goblet. "I was getting bored out of my mind sitting at my old counter in the tunnels anyway. I could use a breath of fresh air."
