CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 136: THE PRICE OF TREASON

  • Next Chapter

Word of the rebellion reached the Black Granite Citadel on a bone-chilling morning.

Gorgat, a minor chieftain of the Blood-Ridge territory who ruled over eight hundred rogue warriors, had grown bold. Believing the vast distance of the eastern crags and the rugged canyon terrain would shield his clan, Gorgat committed an unthinkable act of defiance. He tore down the obsidian banner of the white nine-pointed star, burned the messengers sent to collect the seasonal tribute of livestock and iron ore, and publicly declared his territory independent of the Sovereign's rule.

High atop the high balcony of the citadel, Caius received the spymaster's report with absolute indifference. His pale eyes scanned the sweeping horizon of the Steppes. He did not issue a grand proclamation. He did not send an emissary to negotiate terms.

He simply raised his left hand, allowing a pulse of Crown Core intent to flare through his mind sea.

Down in the inner courtyard, the blindfolded puppet construct of Krag’gath snapped its head upward. Behind the former Iron-Skull Grand Chieftain, the one thousand dark-armored veterans of the First Cohort shifted in total unison. The Black Obsidian Beads embedded in their foreheads flickered with a cold, violet light as the hive mind received its orders.

The battle at Blood-Ridge was over almost before it truly began.

Gorgat’s rogue warriors had lined the narrow, rocky canyon pass, roaring wildly and beating their spiked wooden shields in a desperate display of bravado. They expected the chaotic, disorganized charges typical of traditional Orc warfare.

They were entirely unprepared for the Black Obsidian Legion.

Operating through the shared consciousness of the forehead beads, the First Cohort advanced without a single shout, drumbeat, or horn call. The silence of their approach was more terrifying than any war cry.

Two hundred heavy boar riders spearheaded the assault. Mounted upon monstrous, iron-armored dire-boars, the shock cavalry swept into the canyon mouth like a tidal wave of dark metal. The heavy mounts shattered the rebel barricades into splinters, trampling defenders into bloody pulp beneath massive, iron-shod hooves.

Before the survivors could regroup, six hundred heavy infantry locked their tower shields together, forming an impenetrable wall of black iron. They moved forward with mechanical precision, thrusting short spears and swinging heavy war axes, methodically grinding the rebel frontline into dust. Above the shield wall, one hundred shamans and archers rained down calculated volleys of steel-tipped arrows and searing dark lightning, systematically sealing every escape route along the canyon walls.

At the center of the slaughter, Krag’gath moved like a force of nature.

The massive, iron-clad puppet charged into the densest cluster of rebel defenders. His main skill, Iron Siege Breaker, activated instantly. Kinetic force compressed around his massive war hammer as he swung it in a violent arc, shattering defensive shields, crushing chest plates, and instantly liquefying the internal organs of a dozen Orcs in a single blow.

Gorgat, desperate and realizing his fatal mistake, rallied his personal bodyguard and lunged at the puppet chieftain. He swung a jagged, two-handed broadsword with all his strength, aiming directly for Krag’gath's throat.

Krag’gath didn't bother to dodge. The puppet caught the glowing steel blade in his bare black-iron gauntlet, the metal snapping like a brittle twig under his grip. Before Gorgat could draw a sidearm, Krag’gath’s free hand swept downward. The hammer struck Gorgat's skull with thunderous force, crushing it instantly and sending the chieftain's lifeless body crashing into the crimson dirt.

Within an hour, the battle ceased. All eight hundred rebels lay slaughtered.

By dusk, the Blood-Ridge encampment had been completely dismantled, transformed into an explicit, horrific testament to the Sovereign's absolute authority.

Under Krag’gath’s silent, mechanical direction, the legionnaires set to work. They flayed the raw hides of Gorgat and his top sub-captains, stripping the skin away in long, gruesome strips. The bloodied, pale skins were tightly stretched across tall wooden frames and raised along the highest ridge line of the canyon. Standing starkly against the dark volcanic rock, the flayed hides served as macabre banners, fluttering ominously in the desert wind where the white nine-pointed star had once hung.

Below the ghastly banners, the bodies of the remaining eight hundred fallen rebels were stripped of their weapons and impaled on thick wooden pikes lining both sides of the main trade road. The corridor of corpses stretched for over a mile, filling the canyon with the stench of iron and rot.

When the First Cohort turned and marched back toward the Black Iron Hills in silent formation, they left behind a desolate, ghost-filled graveyard.

News of the bloody purge rippled across the five main territories within days. The sight of Gorgat's skin hanging over the eastern crags silenced every lingering whisper of discontent. Across the entirety of the Shattered Steppes, no chieftain ever spoke of rebellion again.
