CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 129: THE CRUCIBLE OF THE CALDERA

The volcanic basin of the Ashen-Crags hummed with a suffocating, oppressive heat. Rivers of bubbling magma snaked across the black basalt floor, casting long, writhing shadows over the two colossal armies facing off across the wasteland.

On one side stood the combined, apocalyptic force of the Grave-Walkers and Ashen-Crag Giants, featuring thousands of skeletal abominations, ghouls, and fourteen-foot rock-skinned titans led by Grand Necromancer Mal'kor and Giant King Thrum.

On the other side stood Caius’s consolidated empire, consisting of three thousand five hundred elite veterans of the Iron-Skull, Blood-Moon, and Dire-Fang clans. At the very front of the human’s formation, casting long, dark silhouettes against the glowing lava, stood the three blindfolded, self-refining puppet warlords: Krag'gath, Borgath, and Gor'muka, their chests pulsing with condensed, high-density essence beads.

Caius stepped past his vanguard, walking alone into the neutral strip of ash between the two forces. His dark traveler’s cloak snapped in the superheated gale, and his pale eyes locked onto Mal'kor and Thrum, who loomed at the front of the enemy lines.

"Mal'kor. Thrum," Caius called out, his voice carrying effortlessly over the roar of the magma. "You gathered your remnants here to die for a lost cause."

Giant King Thrum let out a roar that shook loose rock from the cliffs, his massive obsidian fists pounding his chest. "Human arrogance! Your puppets are stolen clay, and your horde is a passing storm! We will grind you into dust!"

Caius raised a single hand, cutting off the giant's fury with a chilling, absolute calm.

"I have no interest in wasting time slaughtering every foot soldier here," Caius said softly, his voice cutting cleanly through the ambient roar. "I will give you both a choice. A chance to avoid becoming mindless puppets in my collection."

Mal'kor’s skeletal grip tightened on his bone staff, his hollow green eyes narrowing. "What kind of trick is this, boy?"

"No trick," Caius replied, a faint, cold smile touching his lips. "Your two armies fight each other right here, right now. Let the Grave-Walkers and the Ashen-Crags tear one another apart. Whichever army wins, whichever chieftain proves his forces are superior, will become my second-in-command."

Caius’s eyes flashed with a dangerous, dark light as he pointed an ivory-gloved finger at the two leaders. "And unlike my current hounds, the winning chieftain's life will be spared. He will lead my vanguard, and his mana core will remain intact within his living body."

A stunned, horrified silence crashed over the enemy ranks. Mal'kor turned his head in disbelief to look at Thrum. The Giant King’s massive stone jaw dropped open before twisting into a snarl of furious betrayal.

"You want us to butcher our own allies?" Mal'kor screaked, his voice cracking with old panic.

"You have three seconds to decide," Caius whispered, his hands igniting with violet spatial-lightning. "Or I feed both of your armies to my beasts, and turn you both into blindfolded toys."

Thrum looked back at his towering rock giants, then at the shambling legions of the Grave-Walkers. The ancient, brutal instincts of the steppes, where survival belonged strictly to the strongest, flared hot in his chest. Why die for a withered necromancer when he could rule at the human's right hand?

"The Ashen-Crags bow to no fragile bones!" Thrum roared, spinning around and bringing his massive stone fist down directly onto the skull of a nearby Grave-Walker ghoul with a sickening crack.

Mal'kor shrieked in absolute fury, his green eyes blazing with wrath. "Betraying scum! Legions of the dead, tear the stone giants to shreds!"

The vast, unified enemy front instantly imploded.

Thousands of skeletal warriors and necromantic ghouls swarmed forward, their claws scraping against volcanic rock, while fourteen-foot rock giants swung boulder-sized fists, flattening rows of undead in devastating shockwaves.

The battle for survival had begun.
