CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 123: THE SECOND SKULL
The Sanguine Rift became a slaughterhouse in the span of a single heartbeat.
The blindfolded husk of Krag'gath tore through the front lines of the Blood-Moon Berserkers like a siege engine forged from bone and shadow. Its massive waraxe swung in lethal, soundless arcs, shattering breastplates and shearing through torsos with sickening crunches. Geysers of dark red blood erupted into the air, painting the dry steppe dust in a thick, wet crimson. Heads rolled across the earth while disemboweled warriors shrieked in sudden, terminal agony, trampling their own entrails as they fell beneath the stampede.
Behind the vanguard, Caius's thousand Iron-Skull warriors plunged directly into the meat grinder. Driven by the terrifying realization that any sign of hesitation meant immediate execution from their master, they fought with desperate, unbridled savagery. Axes bit deep into flesh, jawbones cracked under iron-shod boots, and warm gore sprayed across sweating, green-skinned faces. It was a brutal, unfiltered culling. The weak, the slow, and the cowardly were systematically butchered by the Blood-Moon Berserkers or trampled underfoot, leaving only the most ferocious survivors standing.
Atop the central mound, Grand Chieftain Borgath the Flesh-Tearer let out an unhinged, blood-mad roar. Bathing in the slaughter of his own men, he swung his dual iron cleavers, hacking his way through the chaos.
"I will skin you, human!" Borgath bellowed, his red-skinned frame bulging with brute fury as he leaped across a mound of corpses, charging straight toward Caius.
Caius did not even blink. With a flick of his wrist, a thread of violet spatial lightning fractured the air.
Before Borgath could close the distance, a silent fissure of space sliced cleanly across his midsection. The red-skinned warlord's unstoppable momentum shattered instantly. His heavy frame slammed into the blood-soaked dirt, his upper body sliding off his lower torso in a gruesome display of absolute power, spilling steaming viscera across the gravel.
The remaining Blood-Moon Berserkers froze. Their weapons dropped from slackened hands as they stared at the partitioned corpse of their chieftain, choking on the copper stench of fresh death. In the unyielding code of the steppes, absolute strength was the only law.
Within moments, the surviving berserkers dropped to their knees, driving their weapons into the earth and bowing their heads in total, unreserved submission.

Silence settled over the crimson basin, broken only by the ragged breathing of the survivors.
Caius reined his mount forward, his pale eyes sweeping coldly over the aftermath. Of the one thousand heavy-armored Iron-Skull orcs who had marched into the Sanguine Rift with him, barely five hundred remained standing. The rest littered the red dirt in pieces, their blood feeding the very earth they conquered. The weak had been purged entirely, exactly as he commanded.
Hours later, inside a heavily guarded command tent pitched at the edge of the basin, Caius stood before another stone slab. Resting upon it was the colossal, nine-foot corpse of Borgath the Flesh-Tearer.
Shielded in the dim candlelight by his three towering summons, Caius repeated the process he had perfected at the volcano keep. He reached into his consciousness, peering into the void of his soul. His Crown Core pulsed with cold, sovereign authority, its sacred core sockets remaining entirely untouched by filth. Orc essence belonged to the dirt, not to his divine foundation.
Another tool for the march, Caius thought, extending his hand.
He drew out Borgath's extracted crown essence bead, a swirling orb of violent red energy radiating raw, unrefined rage. Just as before, Caius thrust his obsidian and spatial threads directly into it, violently unraveling Borgath's residual ego and binding every strand of its consciousness to his absolute command.
Next, Caius turned his attention to the physical shell. Borgath's native orc mana core remained intact deep within the massive chest cavity, serving as a separate, brute physical engine.
Using his threads of liquid shadow and spatial energy, Caius began weaving muscle fibers, dark hide, and dense bone over Borgath's frame, reinforcing the structure into a towering, nine-foot construct built specifically for relentless slaughter. He forced the rewritten crown essence bead into the chest cavity, locking it tightly in place to govern the nervous system.
When the re-engineered core connected with the native mana reservoir, the puppet's eyes snapped open with a blinding, crimson light.
Caius stepped back, eyeing the new creation with cold satisfaction. Following the tradition he had established with Krag'gath, he took a strip of thick, black fabric and bound it tightly across the construct's face, plunging it into total darkness.
This was Borgath's Puppet, standing nine feet of pure, unyielding destruction. Its primary asset was the Flesh-Tearer Frenzy, a terrifying combat state that channeled raw, unrefined rage into a blinding storm of high-speed slashes capable of tearing through entire enemy formations while absorbing kinetic feedback to reinforce its core.
"Take your place in the ranks of the bound," Caius commanded softly.
The nine-foot construct snapped to attention, its massive blades humming with dark energy as it fell in line beside the blindfolded husk of Krag'gath.
Caius turned toward the exit of the tent, his dark cloak sweeping behind him as he prepared for the next leg of the conquest. Two skulls down, three to go.
