CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 118: THE SUMMONS AT THE GATE

  • Next Chapter

The winding pass of the Iron-Spine Canyon finally broke open, revealing the sinister heart of the Iron-Skull Clan.

Rising from the jagged obsidian peaks like a crown of bone and iron was the Crag of the Skull-Throne. A colossal iron-reinforced fortress, built directly into the throat of an extinct volcano, overlooked the barren valley. Surrounding the fortress were walls thirty feet thick, crowned with iron pikes, ballistas, and burning cauldrons of black pitch.

At the base stood the fortress gate, a massive slab of solid iron, reinforced with the skulls of fallen warlords.

Caius walked out onto the open, gravelly expanse before the gate, his dark traveler’s cloak snapping in the mountain gale. He didn't hide. He didn't shift into the shadows. He walked straight down the central avenue toward the fortress, his boots echoing with heavy, deliberate rhythm.

High atop the ramparts, an alarm horn wailed, a low, reverberating roar that shook dust from the cliff walls.

BRRRRRRR-HOOOOOM!

"Intruder at the main gate!" an Orc lookout bellowed from above. "A single human!"

Laughter erupted along the battlements. A small side portcullis creaked open, and five massive Orc Brutes stepped out onto the gravel. Each stood over eight feet tall, clad in spiked iron plate and wielding massive, two-handed iron mauls that dragged through the dirt. They were Krag'gath's elite vanguard, built like living siege engines.

"Look at this little rat!" the lead Brute boomed, his belly shaking as he roared with laughter. "Walked right up to the slaughterhouse! I’ll crush his skull into a drinking cup!"

The five Brutes surged forward, their heavy boots making the ground tremble as they raised their mauls high.

Caius didn't even slow his pace. His pale eyes glowed with liquid obsidian beneath his hood, his face completely devoid of emotion.

FZZT.

He vanished.

Before the lead Brute could bring his maul down, a fine black line of spatial static split the air across all five of their necks.

Caius materialized ten paces behind them, his hand resting calmly on the ivory hilt of his twin swords. He hadn't even fully drawn the blades, only unsheathed them an inch before clicking them back into place.

SLICE-CRACK!

In absolute unison, all five Orc Brutes froze. A micro-second later, five massive green heads detached from their shoulders, spurting crimson blood across the gray gravel before their towering bodies collapsed like felled timber.

The laughter atop the ramparts died instantly.

Silence fell over the fortress walls like a heavy shroud. The Orc lookouts stared down in utter horror at the five headless champions who had been slaughtered in less than a fraction of a second.

Then, pure chaos erupted.

HOOOOOM! HOOOOOM! HOOOOOM!

Three frantic warning horns sounded across the mountain. Down along the base of the fortress, the massive iron gates began to groan, heavy chains rattling as the main entrance was hoisted open.

"Kill him! Tear him apart!"

A sea of green skin, spiked steel, and raised waraxes surged through the opening. Over five hundred Orc warriors, berserkers, and mounted dire-wolf riders poured out of the stronghold like an overflowing river of bloodlust, filling the wide valley in a roaring tide.

Caius stopped thirty paces from the advancing horde.

He looked at the hundreds of warriors rushing toward him, his heart rate remaining completely steady. Slowly, he reached out his left hand, extending three fingers toward the red soil.

"Summon," Caius whispered.

Dark, liquid mana erupted from his fingertips, pooling onto the earth. The ground melted away as three massive, ink-black circles of swirling spatial void expanded across the gravel, turning the red dirt into bottomless lakes of shadow.

From the first pool, a terrifying wave of scorching, pitch-black heat erupted. Rising from the dark portal was a towering Black Flame Demon, its horns wrapped in roaring dark fire, its obsidian skin cracking with orange magma veins as it let out a roar that shattered the glass in the fortress windows.

From the second pool, a cold, lethal elegance materialized. Stepping out onto two long, graceful legs was the Arachne Princess. She stood fully humanoid, her alluring, dangerous figure encased in sleek, obsidian-black armor that accentuated every sharp curve. A dark, jagged obsidian crown sat atop her exposed, lethal head. From her back sprouted four long, blade-like chitinous spider-arms that twitched with razor precision, while her two main hands gripped dual black curved swords dripping with corrosive shadow-venom.

From the third pool, a low, reverberating growl shook the valley. Paws made of condensed dark lightning stepped onto the soil as the Black Sabre-Lightning Tiger materialized. Its sleek, shadowy fur rippled with violet electricity, and its four-foot ivory sabre-tusks crackled with lethal kinetic charge.

The three beastly and martial constructs stood shoulder-to-shoulder in front of Caius, their burning eyes locked onto the advancing Orc horde.

Caius stood behind them, pulling off his traveler's hood to reveal his dark hair, pale skin, and glowing obsidian eyes.

"Pave the way," Caius commanded coldly.
