CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 107: THE INCOMPLETE TECHNIQUE

  • Next Chapter

The heavy iron-reinforced oak doors of the Patriarch’s private study slammed shut, sealing out the frantic activity echoing through the hallways of House Vel'drin. Outside, guards were fortifying the court wards in anticipation of the Dual Sovereigns' envoys, but inside the sanctuary, silence reigned, save for the crackle of the crimson hearth fire casting long, dancing shadows across the ancient stone walls.

Patriarch Vane walked behind his massive obsidian desk, his face bathed in harsh, shifting light. He didn't sit down. Instead, he turned his piercing crimson gaze directly toward Old Bones, the weight of his authority pressing down on the room like a physical mass.

"Speak," Vane commanded, his deep voice slicing through the stillness. "Orven is securing the perimeter, so there are no ears here but mine. What truly happened in that courtyard, Old Bones? A simple Sabre Lightning Tiger bead does not call down dark purple heaven-tribulation lightning."

Old Bones let out a long, ragged breath, rubbing the back of his aching neck where the residual shockwave of mana still prickled his skin. His usual relaxed demeanor was entirely gone, replaced by the grave, cautious weight of an old assassin who knew he was treading on terrifyingly thin ice.

"The beast bead was just the catalyst, My Lord," Old Bones said, his voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper. "The boy didn't use an alchemy array or an external focus to absorb it. He used an internal refining technique."

Vane’s dark eyebrows knit together sharply. "An internal refining technique? On a raw, unpurified beast bead? That is suicide. His meridians should have been shredded from the inside out."

"He used the Calamity Forge," Old Bones revealed quietly.

Vane froze. The cold, calculating Patriarch of House Vel'drin actually stiffened, his eyes narrowing to razor-sharp slits as the name hung heavily in the air.

"The Calamity Forge?" Vane repeated, a dangerous edge creeping into his tone. "That experimental, high-tier refinement method locked deep in the forbidden archives? It is incomplete! The internal friction required to burn away a beast's residual will creates a violently unstable flame. It destroys the core four times out of five."

"I know," Old Bones grunted, a dry, helpless smirk touching his lips. "And do you know who taught it to him? Your own son. Sereth passed it to the boy before he was dragged off to the Moon Palace dungeons."

Vane closed his eyes for a single moment, exhaling a sharp, controlled breath through his nose. "Sereth... that reckless fool. He handed a child an unrefined death sentence."

"That's what I thought too," Old Bones said, leaning forward slightly against his cane. "I offered to guard him, expecting to step in the second his core ruptured. But My Lord... it didn't rupture. Caius didn't just handle the Calamity Flame. He swallowed the tiger's wild lightning like it was nothing more than morning tea."

Vane opened his eyes, staring intently at the old assassin. "How?"

Old Bones leaned in closer, his scarred face fully illuminated by the hearth. "When the friction started, I felt his energy flaring. It wasn't standard dark elf or human mana, Vane. It was a pitch-black, liquid energy. It acted like a ravenous void. It didn't just burn away the tiger's impurities, it devoured the lightning whole and forced the sky itself to temper his core with those three purple bolts."

Silence stretched across the study as Patriarch Vane digested the staggering revelation. His mind, always working three steps ahead of everyone else in the realm, weighed the catastrophic implications.

"A black energy that consumes foreign elemental essence and force-tempers the core," Vane murmured, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. "Sereth gave him an incomplete technique, yet the boy’s unique bloodline completed the equation."

Vane turned away from the desk toward the narrow stained-glass window overlooking the main gates. In the distant subterranean sky, dark, roiling clouds were already gathering as the vanguard of the Sun and Moon Palaces approached.

"He used the Calamity Forge to digest a high-tier beast bead, transformed his core, and called down atmospheric tribulation," Vane said softly, a dark, chilling grin slowly spreading across his face. "If the Dual Sovereigns learn he possesses an origin-tier energy capable of such feats, they won't just test him at sixteen. They will execute him on the spot as an existential threat to the realm."

"So what do we do?" Old Bones asked grimly, his hand resting near the hilt of his hidden blade.

"We stick to the narrative," Vane declared, turning back to Old Bones with absolute, unshakable authority. "To the envoys, Caius is simply a prodigy whose spatial affinity accidentally resonated with a volatile mountain beast bead during a breakthrough. We mention nothing of the Calamity Forge. Nothing of the black mana."

Vane’s eyes burned with a pragmatic, bloodthirsty light. "My son's freedom relies on that boy surviving to sixteen. And House Vel'drin will inherit whatever god-tier arts he completes before the end."
