Chapter 637: Chapter 234: Struck It Rich

The Imperial Physician left in deep embarrassment. The others in the room exchanged glances, wanting to laugh but not daring to.

Xu Su Ying, however, stared at the woman in front of her. She thought, "This sister is pretty awesome. Who is she? If we aren’t blood relatives, I definitely need to swear sisterhood with her."

"Are you thinking about dragging me off to swear sisterhood? No need for that. I’ve long been your biological sister from a different mother and father."

Princess Kangning stepped closer and poked Xu Su Ying’s cheek. "Do you really not recognize me? You must be faking it. The way you look at me is exactly the same as before."

Seeing this, the others in the room exchanged glances again. Realizing there was no room for them to interject, they tactfully left the room.

No one knew what Princess Kangning and Xu Su Ying talked about, but soon, Princess Kangning’s bitter weeping and Xu Su Ying’s loud HA HA HA echoed from inside the room. After laughing, she received a playful beating, and her laughter quickly turned into begging for mercy.

As evening approached, Princess Kangning didn’t stay much longer. Before the Xu family had dinner, she headed back to Princess Longyu’s Mansion.

That night.

The first bowl of medicinal decoction was brought into Xu Su Ying’s room. Looking at the pitch-black medicine, her entire body rejected it. She leaned back and tilted her head away, absolutely certain she would be poisoned to death if she drank it.

Her mother didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at her reaction. "You’re a grown woman now, yet you’re still acting like this over drinking medicine. Aren’t you afraid the children will laugh at you? Here, I’ve prepared some candied fruit for you. Hurry up and drink the medicine, then you can have some."

"I can’t. I just can’t drink it. The smell alone makes me gag."

No matter how much her mother coaxed her, it was no use. Finally, she had to pull out her trump card. "If you drink your medicine, I will have the servants bring over all the account books and the revenue from your shops and estates over the years."

Xu Su Ying’s eyes lit up, and she snatched the bowl of medicine. In just a few huge gulps, she drained the medicine completely dry. Once finished, she proudly showed the bottom of the bowl to her mother, which only made the older woman not know whether to laugh or cry once again.

Fortunately, her mother was a woman of her word. She immediately ordered the maids to fetch the items from the other room.

The maids quickly returned. This time, it wasn’t just one or two maids—a full dozen of them walked in. Ten of them carried wooden chests filled with account books. The other two each carried a chest filled with silver notes.

Thick stacks of silver notes were crammed into the chests, filling them to the brim. One could only imagine what a massive fortune it was.

"This includes the revenue from your estates and shops, as well as the dividends from the joint businesses you ran with your friends over the years," her mother explained. "Among them, Kangning Fragrance Workshop provided the highest dividends, which have been increasing year after year. The vast majority of your wealth was delivered here by that girl, Princess Kangning."

"I have shares in Kangning Fragrance Workshop?" Xu Su Ying asked reflexively.

"Indeed, and a significant amount at that. You and Princess Kangning started that shop together—one of you provided the formulas, while the other managed the operations and sales. At first, we all thought you were just playing around. Who could have known that the business would boom more and more each year? You’ve practically been raking in gold every single day."

Her mother sighed with genuine admiration. "That girl, Princess Kangning, is truly wonderful. Every time she comes to visit the Eldest Princess, she makes a point to come over to our estate and chat with me, as if fulfilling your filial duties on your behalf. As for your other friends, they haven’t cut ties with us over the years either. They’ve always prepared complete gifts for every festival and changing season."

Hearing this, Xu Su Ying was overjoyed. "My judgment has never been wrong. I don’t just know how to pick friends; I also know how to pick men. You saw it for yourself today. Isn’t Chen Song exceptionally great? Even though his background isn’t prominent, he knows how to strive for success, and he treats me well. You approve of this son-in-law now, right?"

"I approve," her mother replied with a smile. "If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have accepted his kowtow yesterday. At my age, I stopped caring about pedigree and social standing a long time ago. Yan Cheng had everything on paper, but what good did that do? Didn’t he just end up making your life a living hell? I’ve let all of that go now. As long as you live well, that’s all that matters. I don’t care about my son-in-law’s background. As long as he treats you sincerely and is willing to protect you with his life, I will accept him."

Xu Su Ying happily hugged the older woman, affectionately calling her "Mother."

Her mother was tired out from a long day. Now that her daughter was back by her side and wouldn’t suddenly disappear without a trace, her heart was finally at ease, and exhaustion began to set in.

After her mother returned to her courtyard to rest, Xu Su Ying found herself entirely unable to sleep.

She called Chen Song in and excitedly showed off the chest full of silver notes to him. "Do you see this? It’s completely filled with silver notes! They’re all one thousand taels a piece! Chen Song, we’re rich!"
