Bride of Retribution: Aloof Billionaire's Dominant Game
Chapter 955 - 496: She’s Already Starting to Slowly Drift Away from Him (2)
It was such a coincidence that when he checked the times of their flights to Sydney, they were almost the same. That meant the chance of them meeting in the hotel lobby was extremely high; everything was just so coincidental.
That day, Emma was shivering in his presidential suite, explaining that the hotel was running a promotion with a $2500 event, and she persuaded Avery to go along. If it had been a day earlier or later, they wouldn’t have met; they would have just passed each other in the bustling city of Sydney. But due to various reasons, they both arrived at that hotel. Sometimes fate is like an invisible giant hand pushing time, people, events, even everything forward, making it impossible to stop or prevent. And the cruellest fate for him was bringing Avery in front of him, only to find love with fragile, icy steps afterward.
During the time she lost her memory, she went from being a little frightened and resistant to becoming dependent, trusting, and giving him that sweet feeling, making him feel alive again, with human flesh, blood, and love. But now, he sat frustrated in his office, while outsiders admired the Hughes Clan, aware that the man seated at the deepest level had supreme rights and wealth. Yet, only he knew what he truly wanted; rights and wealth could be attained through effort, but her heart might be something that he could never truly possess in his lifetime. Her love was like the resplendent sun in the sky, so warm and dazzling that he could clearly feel and see it, yet no matter how much he wanted to reach for it, he couldn’t touch it...
The phone on the desk dinged with a message: "Avery said she somehow doesn’t fit this identity." Such simple words made Joshua feel as if facing a great enemy; she really started having doubts about her identity.
He knew Avery too well; her mentioning the word ’identity’ was enough to explain everything. Now, he had to make his marriage with Avery a reality, turn falsehood into truth, so that nothing could change anymore.
Close to the end of the workday, Joshua left ten minutes early. After Julian came back, he delegated all the social interactions to him. During this period, he had to be extra cautious. But why did he have to love so timidly? He often mocked himself, wondering how he ended up in such a deep, inextricable trap while even he found it unbelievable.
Through the windshield, he could see Avery slowly walking past, looking a bit dazed. What was she thinking? How wonderful it would be to delve into her mind. As she sat in the passenger seat, the faint fragrance from her body wafted into his nose. Her body scent seemed to shift with her emotions; today the scent seemed to have a slightly disorienting effect, just like her current state, with her distinctively dark and clear eyes reflecting confusion...
"Avery, what are you thinking?" Joshua’s voice sounded near her ear. Avery tried to naturally avoid his slowly approaching lips, but didn’t want him to notice anything, making her body more stiff amidst such dizziness.
"Thinking about what to eat." A few strands of hair fell beside her cheek, making her face appear more lustrous as she fluttered her long lashes, trying to escape his burning gaze but finding she couldn’t. His slender fingers lifted her chin to gaze at her, his ink-like eyes shimmering slightly: "So has Avery decided what to eat?" Today, he deliberately let all the bodyguards avoid them, just to make her feel less under surveillance. He always feared she’d overthink or meet undesirable people, but pushing too tight could backfire.
"A lot, want to eat something delicious, all the tasty foods I can think of." Her stomach was truly starving; today she didn’t feel much appetite at all, but suddenly now she felt like she could eat a whole cow. So strange.
"The tastiest, do you want to eat it?" The low words carried ambiguity, the man’s brows and eyes with a wicked smile; her appearance always tempted him to tease her.
"Do you ever have a serious moment? I mean actually eating." Avery tried hard not to blush; this man couldn’t go a couple sentences without becoming improper.
"I meant food; it’s you who thought somewhere else, hmm?" Joshua leaned over, gently scraping her cheek, then laughed softly, the laughter emanating from his robust chest.
Avery watched his laugh, full of mature male charm. If only these things didn’t exist, it would be so much better; if only he really were her husband, it would be so much better. But what about Lucas? The man who, whenever she thought of him, would cause her heartache? Though she already forgot him, she knew he had to exist in the depths of her memory. No matter what emotions, he must be there, waiting for her to remember him.
One moment, she was perfectly fine, and then her gaze dimmed slightly in the next. She tried her best to look calmer, more normal, trying hard not to let him see the change in her heart. Joshua’s heart felt pierced; she was learning to conceal and hide in front of him. Though she sat right beside him, clearly within reach, it seemed he could already see her slowly drifting away...
