Bride of Retribution: Aloof Billionaire's Dominant Game
Chapter 949 - 495: Did Avery Jane Resign?_2
"President Hughes..." Emma White entered the office and saw three men inside, all incredibly handsome, leaving one with a feeling as if their drool might soon hit the floor.
"Come in." Joshua Hughes glanced at her indifferently, signaling her to follow him inside.
His voice, movements, and even his gaze carried an irresistible command, and Emma followed him in.
"Finding a woman to enter the lounge at this time, what does that mean? Is it just to let off some steam?" Alexander King found it somewhat unbelievable. This woman couldn’t have come to discuss business, and if it were business, there would be no need to avoid him and Julian Carter. Personal matters? What kind of personal matters in a lounge?
The room was comfortable, stylish yet simple. A thick shag carpet covered the floor, and the bedsheets were a striking white, soft and inviting. On a tall European-style flower stand were long-stemmed, exquisite red roses. Though it was only a lounge, it felt cozy and inviting, even the curtains were so beautiful they were hard to look away from.
The man sitting on the sofa crossed his long legs, looked at Emma, and spoke slowly, "Avery Jane resigned?"
"President Hughes, this has nothing to do with me. I don’t know. She was acting a bit off today when she came over. And she didn’t mention anything about this to me." Emma’s body involuntarily shook. Yesterday, she was merely covering for Avery, who had asked her to help. How did things escalate to resigning? Joshua Hughes wouldn’t hold her accountable for this, would he? She’s innocent. Who knows what kind of issues they’ve run into?
"What was off? Tell me everything without missing a bit." His guess was spot on, Avery indeed had something she was hiding from him, and it must be something related to him. Up to now, her world only revolved around him.
"In the morning, she didn’t like talking, didn’t joke with us as usual. She typically liked drinking a cup of black tea, but today she seemed afraid of the cold and kept drinking hot water, cup after cup. And at noon, while we went out for lunch, she didn’t want to go, asked me to bring her a lunchbox, but seemed to eat just two bites. She didn’t look happy, but she never mentioned resigning." Emma thought about Avery’s unusual behavior today, could it be that the two had a fight and were breaking up?
"Try to persuade her not to resign." Joshua’s gaze darkened, like a night sky devoid of stars, mysterious and sorrowful, making anyone’s heartbeat accelerate.
What’s Avery trying to do? Acting emotional over such a man, even if he weren’t wealthy, she’d willingly chase after him. Suppressing the urge to drool, Emma sneaked a glance at Joshua’s handsome features.
"She might not listen." Emma withdrew her almost dreamy gaze. Avery might appear delicate and weak, but she’s quite determined. Once she has her mind set on something, it’s not easily changed.
"Just tell her you’re really reluctant to let her go, and shed a few tears." Avery’s heart is soft like the clouds in the sky. She’s willing to do anything for people she cares about, and Emma is her good friend. If Emma is smart enough, Avery will naturally choose to stay.
"If she stays, you can name any conditions." Joshua pressed his fingers against his forehead. Right now, he could only give her more tasks, keeping her occupied so she won’t have time for other thoughts. Once he finds the root of the issue and sorts it out, she’ll be free to resign without trouble.
"No need, President Hughes, I also hope to continue working with Avery. I will do my best." Emma surely wouldn’t foolishly suggest conditions to Joshua Hughes, as the outcome isn’t guaranteed. Whether successful or not, proposing conditions would be pointless; if successful, Joshua Hughes wouldn’t let her lose out, especially since Avery is genuinely a good person, unpretentious, easy to get along with.
"Then, President Hughes, I’ll head out now." Observing the man, who had gone silent, Emma felt a bit uneasy. His presence was so dominating it felt as if the entire space was under his control, drawing everyone in like a powerful magnet.
The two in the office watched as, ten minutes later, a girl emerged from inside, neatly dressed, with a trace of panic and a slight blush on her face. Following her, Joshua Hughes also stepped out.
"Fifteen minutes?" Alexander King raised an eyebrow, a little incredulous, playfully looking at Joshua Hughes.
"You’re overthinking it." Joshua’s face was gloomy as he coldly glanced at Alexander King, still filled with dark humor.
"Alright, I might have overthought it. How about I host dinner tonight?" Alexander eyed Julian, still seated with an expressionless face, wondering why there was no reaction, even though it was meant to welcome him.
Joshua Hughes is a peculiar character; even the assistants he hires aren’t ordinary people, their minds don’t hold water, they hold ice.
"Do whatever you want, I have things to do." His mind was whirling at high speed, trying to understand what had happened beyond his sight, what kind of conspiracy lurked in those hidden corners, altering the lovely times between him and her, making her different, even her eyes seemed thoughtful. She’s starting to lock her heart up, no longer smiling freely like before, fully dependent on him...
