Avery Jane stood by the street. The spring wind and sunshine were both gentle, yet they just couldn’t reach her heart.

"Get in." A cute little car stopped beside her. The window rolled down and Eliza Bell’s charming little face leaned out from inside, her smile overflowing.

"Sis, where are you living now? Didn’t you say that place belongs to your friend, that you’re just staying there for a while?" Eliza Bell asked Avery Jane as she drove.

"I live in the old district. It’s a bit out of the way." Avery Jane lowered her head, looking at the file envelope Eliza Bell handed her. Those were shares of Joshua Hughes’s company, but she didn’t want them.

Even though these things weren’t given to her by Joshua Hughes, it felt as if the whole envelope was steeped in his scent. She wondered if there was something wrong with her sense of smell—she could practically catch that faint, intoxicating musk, and his presence, that masculine aura brimming with a fierce urge to conquer. She had to be insane to think of him again. By now he was probably lost in some woman’s tender embrace, his arms full of soft, fragrant jade. A man like him would never be lacking women.

"Or you could move in with me. That house Grandmother left behind was meant for us." Eliza Bell drove the car toward the park. Yesterday they’d spent an entire afternoon just talking about the past. But they still had so much to plan carefully, so they needed a quiet place to talk. She’d closed the gallery again today and they could sit down in peace to properly discuss what comes next.

Outside, it was so quiet it was as if time itself had stopped. Avery Jane sat on the large terrace, the view outside all tender, vivid green. How long had it been since she last calmed down enough to truly appreciate a beautiful scene? She had no idea. All she knew was that during this stretch of time she’d been living like a walking corpse, in so much pain it felt like she couldn’t go on living, yet still unwilling to die. She clearly hated him—hated everything he’d done, hated that he’d deceived her heart—yet still couldn’t bear to leave. Even she herself mocked how useless she was.......

"Sis, if I couldn’t find you, maybe I would have gone myself, whether or not I could succeed." Thinking of all those years of preparation, Eliza Bell knew that if she never managed to locate Avery Jane, she would go take revenge while she was still young and beautiful. That was why she’d been so desperate to give herself to Julian Carter. She wanted to give all her first and most beautiful things to the man she’d once cared for, so that even if she died right after, she wouldn’t regret it.

"Eliza Bell, he ruined my parents at the gambling table, so let me take it back from the gambling table." Avery Jane’s voice was firm, a glint like flowing light flashing in her eyes. For Vincent Hunter, even killing him wouldn’t be too much—but what she wanted was to make him suffer more than death.

"Sis, Vincent Hunter has one fatal weakness: he’s a lecher. His son is just as lustful as he is. All these years, I’ve kept training myself, wanting to turn into a Fox Spirit seductive enough to ensnare anyone, but what I’ve managed is only a superficial trick. But you, Sis—your beauty and that inexplicable pull you have on men comes from deep in your bones. You can do it. Even if you want to beat him at the gambling table and win everything he has, you first have to become a woman no one can resist, a woman men only want to drown in. When his eyes are filled with nothing but you, he’s already distracted—and distraction is the biggest taboo in gambling. That way, before the game even starts, we’ve already won thirty percent. I have a friend—well, you could call her a teacher—she can teach you everything. Sis, Vincent Hunter is not an easy opponent to deal with. You can’t afford to rely only on your gambling skills and luck and get careless. Our family only has the two of us left. This revenge has to be taken, but we must be absolutely certain before we act." Over these years, Eliza Bell had devoted herself single-mindedly to training into a Fox Spirit, only to realize that at best she was just a Persian Cat. Avery Jane was different. The traits in her made it possible for her to become a Spirit no man could defend against, the kind of Spirit that would make a man hand over his whole heart to her.

Eliza Bell leaned close to Avery Jane’s ear and spoke in a low voice. It was a plan she’d been working on for a long time—only the executor had changed. It wasn’t that she wanted to push the danger onto Avery Jane; it was simply that Avery Jane was the most suitable choice. This was a huge bet on life itself. They had no margin for losing, so they had to be one hundred percent sure.......
