Chapter 42: Cut the Tails

I stepped into the chamber.

The fox watched me come. Its gold eyes tracked my approach.

Its gaze moved past me toward Seolhwa, who was circling right along the chamber wall, swords low, footwork silent.

I rapped the cane against the stone floor.

The crack echoed off the ceiling.

The fox's head snapped back to me.

“Over here,” I said.

The eyes fixed.

I rapped the cane again. Harder. The sound rang through the vault.

The fox lunged. One moment coiled. The next, airborne. The distance closed.

“NOW!” I shouted.

Seorin's talisman hit the ground between us.

Light erupted. A wall of pale blue energy, translucent, flickering, no thicker than paper.

The creature hit it at full speed.

The fox's charge stuttered. Its momentum broke. The massive body twisted as it pushed through the energy field, claws scrabbling against the resistance.

Four seconds.

I dove left.

The fox tore through the barrier and landed where I'd been standing. Its jaws snapped shut on empty air. One massive paw cratered the stone floor.

It wheeled toward me.

I scrambled backward. Hands and heels on stone, dragging myself across the chamber floor.

The fox pounced.

I rolled. The impact shook the ground beside me. Chips of stone peppered my face. A claw caught the hem of my robe and tore the fabric from hip to knee.

“SECOND!” I screamed.

Another talisman struck the floor. Another barrier erupted between me and the fox.

Four more seconds.

I used them.

Back on my feet. Moving laterally. Keeping the creature's attention on me. I slammed the empty cane against every stone surface I passed.

The fox's ears flattened against its skull.

It charged again.

The barrier shattered. Glass-bright fragments of energy scattered across the floor. The fox came through snarling, its jaws wide.

I couldn't dodge this one.

The paw hit me.

A glancing blow, the back of its foreleg sweeping across my torso as the beast lunged past me.

I left the ground.

My back hit the chamber wall. The impact drove the air from my lungs. I slid to the floor, gasping.

Pain bloomed across my chest. The claws had caught me through the robe. Blood soaked the fabric immediately, spreading across my torso in dark ribbons.

The fox turned for the kill.

Seolhwa hit.

She came from the blind side. Both swords driving in unison at the base of the lowest tail.

The blades bit.

The tail was thicker than her arm. Dense with Qi, reinforced by whatever unnatural physiology gave the creature its power. The swords cut halfway and stuck.

Seolhwa wrenched.

Muscle tore. The fox screamed, a sound that split the air like a thunderclap. The remaining four tails lashed in every direction.

One caught Seolhwa across the shoulder.

She staggered but held her footing. Both hands on the primary sword, twisting, sawing through the last fibers of the tail.

It came free.

The severed tail hit the ground. It thrashed for three seconds. Then went still. The crimson fur dulled to gray.

The fox shrank. The bulk across the chest thinned. The gold eyes, which had blazed, dimmed by a fraction.

One tail gone. Four remaining. The fox's Qi dimmed with it.

But it was still massive. Still faster than any of us. Still angry.

The fox spun toward Seolhwa.

“THIRD!” I shouted from the floor.

Seorin's last barrier talisman hit.

The barrier erupted between the fox and Seolhwa. The creature slammed into it. The energy field buckled, cracked, held for two seconds—

Then she did something I hadn't expected.

Three more talismans. These were different. The paper was darker, the brushwork denser. They flew from Seorin's hand in a fan pattern.

They struck the fox's flank, chest, and left haunch.

Light detonated. The talismans discharged their stored Qi directly into the fox's body.

The creature froze.

Every muscle locked. The four remaining tails went rigid, fanning outward like the spokes of a wheel.

Seolhwa moved.

She was already inside the fox's guard. This time, she targeted the second-lowest tail.

The blades struck at the base.

One clean cut.

The second tail dropped.

The fox convulsed as the paralysis broke. Its body contracted further. The fangs shrank.

The fox backed away. The three remaining tails curled defensively around its body.

It snarled, but the sound was weaker.

I pushed myself off the wall. Blood soaked my robe from collar to waist. The three claw marks across my chest burned.

But I could stand.

I could still draw its attention.

“Again,” I said.

Seolhwa circled left. I circled right.

The fox's head swiveled between us.

It feinted toward Seolhwa.

She braced. Both swords up, defensive stance.

The fox reversed direction and came at me.

Fast. Even diminished, even down two tails, it crossed the distance between us in a blink. Its jaws opened. The fangs came for my throat.

I threw myself flat.

The teeth closed above me. They grazed the top of my skull. Strands of hair parted as the jaw snapped shut in the space where my head had been.

I hit the stone on my back. The scholar's blade punched upward from instinct. Eighteen inches of steel drove into the soft tissue under the fox's chin.

The pain made it flinch. Its head jerked sideways. Its momentum carried it past me.

The paw caught me again.

I gasped.

“JINHAE!” Ahyun's voice from somewhere behind me.

The fox stumbled. Seolhwa took the opening.

Both swords targeted the third tail.

The cut was brutal. She hacked through the base with two savage strokes that sprayed blood across the floor and across her face.

The fox shrieked.

Two tails.

The creature's body collapsed inward. Shoulders dropped. The skull narrowed. The fangs that had jutted past its chin retracted until they barely cleared the lips.

It was still the size of a large horse.

Seolhwa didn't stop.

The fox tried to run. Tried to break for one of the corridor exits.

Seolhwa cut its path.

A sword slashed across its front legs. The creature stumbled.

Seolhwa took the fourth tail.

One stroke. The blade sang through the base and the tail dropped like a cut rope.

One tail.

The fox that crouched before us barely resembled the creature that had filled the vault minutes ago. It was the size of a large dog.

It snarled.

The sound was pitiful.

Its single remaining tail lashed sideways as it bolted past Seolhwa toward the nearest corridor, the passage to my right, ten paces from where I stood.

A reflex. A parting strike from a dying predator.

The tail caught her across the chest.

The impact lifted her off the ground. She flew backward, away from the main chamber, and crashed into the corridor mouth beside me. Her body struck the stone floor, bounced once, and skidded to a stop against the corridor wall six paces inside the passage.

The twin swords skittered across the stone in opposite directions.

The fox kept running. It made it three more steps before its legs buckled. It collapsed in the opposite corridor entrance, sides heaving. Blood pooled beneath it from a dozen cuts.

It didn't get up.

I was already moving.

The pain in my chest was distant.

She lay in the corridor. The passage curved left, cutting the line of sight from the vault — from where Ahyun and Seorin stood.

No one else could see her.

I dropped to my knees beside her.

“Seol.”

No response.

“Seol!”

She groaned. Alive.

I reached for her shoulder. Turned her onto her back.

Her outer robe was torn from collar to waist. The dark leather of her combat vest had split along the center seam. Beneath it, the linen binding had shredded.

The fabric hung in strips.

Her breasts were bare.

Flushed pink where the binding had pressed, pale where it hadn't. They rose and fell with each labored breath. The nipples were dark, stiffened by the cold air.

Then her eyes opened.

They found my face first.

Then her gaze dropped.

The shredded binding. The torn vest. Her own bare chest exposed inches from my hands.

The relief died. What replaced it was terror.

"I—I can explain," she stuttered.
