Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign
Chapter 340: Whole
By morning, the craftsperson had laid two slabs over part of the strip beside the bank. Their supports stood clear of the brood, leaving room beneath for the water and for Cradle to pass.
Eira was on the flat stone when Ren came down, drawing from her usual angle. Wick’s light lay across the pocket, and Loom kept the water moving through the shallow end.
The princess rested against her root. Her fingers had distinct gold edges when she lifted them, but Ren watched them soften as she lowered her hand. The medium had helped her hold that shape longer. It still didn’t last.
Cradle waited at the pocket’s edge, where Eira had seen it the evening before.
— • —
It moved in along the bank, its fringe trailing through the water, and stopped beside the submerged root.
The princess turned toward it. Cradle settled close enough for the fringe to spread around her, sheltering her as it sheltered the young behind the stones. She watched without reaching for it.
Loom’s flow continued through the rest of the pocket. Eira checked the outflow, then returned to her place. Within the fringe, the small ripples against the princess’s body eased.
When she leaned toward Wick, Cradle shifted with her. Its fringe lifted on one side and settled farther along the root. Ren could see the difference between that and the barrier: the stones sheltered a fixed strip, while Cradle adjusted around her as she moved.
After a while, her fingers separated again. She raised the hand and laid it against the fringe.
Cradle remained beside her. The narrow gold edges held while Eira drew.

On the following visits, Ren found Eira at the same place or arrived early enough to watch her check the water before sitting down.
Cradle divided its time between the pocket and its own brood. Before returning to the princess, it settled the loose cover over the young and pressed any shifted piece back into place. Eira checked both sheltered areas, comparing the warmth with her notes. The tender continued those checks between her visits.
The first lasting change was in the hand.
Eira laid two drawings together on the stone. One showed the fingers shortly after the medium had been administered. Beneath it, she had recorded when they softened again. On the newer page, she had drawn the same hand at the end of the visit, still resting against Cradle’s fringe.
"It stayed like this after you left," she said.
Ren looked from the drawing to the pocket. The princess opened her hand and closed it, keeping the gaps between her fingers.
Her arm followed. At first its edges blurred whenever she reached away from the root. Later, she could hold it out while turning toward Wick and lower it again without losing the shape. Eira added the shoulder to the next drawing in a firmer line.
There were still changes between visits. Once, while Cradle tended its brood, the princess’s shoulder softened against the root. Her hand and arm remained distinct. When Cradle returned and spread its fringe beside her, the shoulder gradually regained its outline.
Ren stayed through that check. Eira noted it beneath the drawing instead of replacing the earlier observation.
The empty medium jar remained in its case beside the handling sheets. They had used the full measure; there was nothing more to administer. The roots continued their support, Loom maintained the circulation and Wick lit the pocket while Cradle came and went between the two resting places.
Ren watched what she kept each time it left.
— • —
The chest took longer.
Its outline could hold while she rested, but the small Heartflame inside remained incomplete. Turning toward the light made its unfinished edge easier to see. Ren had first noticed a short, distinct section there after the medium. Now he could follow that edge farther around the flame.
He was kneeling beside Eira when the remaining break began to close.
The princess turned toward Wick. Within the gold of her chest, the edge extended across the unfinished section and thinned. Ren leaned forward enough to see it clearly, then stayed still. The line strengthened while she rested beside Cradle.
"Her chest," he said quietly.
Eira looked up from her page.
The two ends met. The new section flickered once, then held with the rest of the structure. When the princess turned back, Ren could still follow it without a break.
She raised an arm toward the light and lowered it. Her chest retained its shape through the movement. The red and blue within her gold shifted as she turned, and the Heartflame remained whole inside them.
Cradle adjusted its fringe along the root. Eira resumed drawing, pausing whenever the princess moved so she could compare the new position with the one before it.
At the end of the visit, nothing had softened.
Ren returned later, after the light across the bank had shifted. Cradle was checking its young behind the barrier. The princess remained against her root, one hand raised toward Wick, with the same clear outline through her arm, shoulder and chest.
He sat down on the stone to watch.
— • —
Cradle had returned to the pocket when she released the root.
She pushed gently away and moved beyond the submerged branches. Eira kept her hands on her notes. Ren watched the space open between the princess and the root that had supported her since they brought her home.
Her shape held in the water. The Heartflame’s completed edge remained clear as she turned.
Ren asked the System privately to check it.
[HEARTFLAME: COMPLETE.]
[HEARTFLAME STRUCTURE: SELF-SUSTAINING.]
He read the answer, then looked back at her. The structure they had watched develop was holding on its own. The root remained within reach, but she hadn’t gone back to it.
"She’s coming to you, Ren."
Kaia’s voice reached him privately as the princess turned toward the stone.
Ren lowered his hand to the water and held out a finger. She crossed the short distance and took it, her small fingers closing around his. He could feel each one against his skin.
She held on while looking up at him. Her chest stayed distinct, the Heartflame whole inside it.
Then her fingers opened.
Ren left his hand where it was as she turned toward Cradle. She moved back across the pocket, clear of the roots, and settled beside the waiting fringe. Her hand remained formed when she laid it against the shell’s edge.
He rested his wrist on the stone, his finger still extended, and watched until she was settled. Only then did he draw his hand back.
Eira finished the line she was drawing before closing her notes.
"I’ll keep checking from here," she said. "I want the next drawings from the same angle."
Ren nodded. "And the young?"
"All covered. I checked before you came."

Afterward, Ren went up to the trunk and sat with his back against it. He waited until he was alone before asking privately for his status.
[STAGE: SIX — PLANET LORD.]
[FOUNDATION: 48.6 MILLION TONS.]
[LAWS: FIRE 17.1% · EARTH 10.0% · AIR 9.0% · WATER 11.1% · DARKNESS 7.5% · LIGHT 3.5% · POISON 3.2% · SPACE 1.50% · TIME 0.75% · LIFE 12.55% · DEATH 13.05%.]
[BONDED: 80/1,500.]
He checked the totals once. Fire and Water retained the small increases from the public ladder floors. Cradle’s bond, accepted after it settled with its young at home, had brought the count to eighty. The foundation and other Law readings were unchanged.
He was still Stage Six. Aldric’s road required Seven.
Ren closed the display and went back down the bank.

Two messages were waiting at his correspondence address.
Sol had sent a catalog reference under their agreement to pass useful entries along. It concerned broodshell young raised in managed conditions, with care observations and a supplier’s file listed as its sources.
Ren opened the entry. The notes concerned the brood’s needs and the conditions under which the observations had been made. He forwarded the reference to Eira so she could compare it with what she was seeing behind the barrier.
The second message came through Halvern, with a formal Alliance letter attached.
It addressed Ren by name and referenced his registered world, the expedition reports and the original transfer sheet entered on the survey office’s return list. It requested his attendance to provide evidence and gave a place and time.
Ren checked the appointment against his slate. The letter listed the records they wanted him to bring, distinguishing his copied observations from the sheet taken at the junction. The original was the last item.
Please bring the original transfer record for consignments 4119 and 4120.
