Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign
Chapter 338: The Answer
They reached the landing before the cutoff.
Tarin was waiting on the bank. Ren lodged the report, then requested an inspection and a crossing for a living native, its dependents, nest cover and water. The stone carrier he proposed to make went on the collection list too. He asked for enough time to bring the load down slowly and have it inspected before the gate opened, with a return crossing for himself and Eira afterward.
The reply arrived while Vesper checked their gear. It gave both crossing times and the attendant’s reference. Ren worked back from the first, allowing for the climb, the trial at the pool and the loaded descent. If they couldn’t finish the trial before the departure limit, the brood would stay at the nest while he returned to arrange another time.
"Mistwhisker stays here," he told Tarin. "Vesper needs her hands free."
She settled the cat beside the supplies, its dressed paw clear of the grit.

They passed the depot and the empty pocket. At the shoulder, Vesper checked the crest from below, then covered the crossing while Ren and Eira followed.
Above the basin, they joined the running channel. Ren stopped at each broken stretch of the cut path. He drew stone up beneath the damaged footing, leaving the channel clear, and tested it after releasing the working. Where they would need to change their grip, he made room to set the carrier down.
At the pool, his low ridge still sheltered the damaged corner. The broodshell had returned to the nest with its young. The sample container stood in its recess.
Ren knelt outside the rooted margin.
"All of you," he said. "The young and their cover. We’ll make room for them at home, and keep checking the water. First we need to see whether we can carry you."

He chose a loose block on the bare shelf, away from the pool, and shaped it with Earth into a low trough. He left a thick base and sides, with one end lower than the others.
Eira compared the inside with the adult’s shell, then checked the depth against the water over the young.
"Wider here. It needs room to turn."
Ren widened it. They lined the bottom with loose sediment from outside the rooted margin and filled it with the pool’s water. He waited for a leak, then lifted the full carrier and held it while Eira checked the depth. A careful tilt showed how much room the water needed below the low rim.
"Keep it level," she said. "Even where you set it down."
"I can carry it. Slowly."
He lowered it into the outer shallows and submerged the low end. The water inside met the pool’s surface, leaving a way in. Eira checked its warmth and waited for the disturbed sediment to settle.
Ren stepped back.

Eira started with a loose cover piece beyond the young. She moved it into the carrier, paused, then added another. The adult watched from over the brood. When she had made a covered space inside, she withdrew.
The broodshell crossed the shallows and passed over the submerged rim. It turned inside, its fringe brushing the stone, then went back to the nest.
This time it returned with a young one beneath its fringe.
It placed the young under the cover and crossed back. Eira waited until it had moved another before transferring a piece from the vacated part of the nest. The remaining young stayed covered throughout. The cracked stone, the straps and the rooted margin stayed where they were.
When the last young was across, the adult settled over them. Eira checked both the nest and the carrier before nodding to Ren.
He raised the load just clear of the shallows. She watched the water settle around the shell, checked beneath the loose cover where she could see, and asked him to lower it again.
The low rim went under. The broodshell stayed.
On the second lift, he carried it a few steps and stopped. Eira checked the depth, the warmth and the young’s positions, then had him return it to the shallows once more.
"Nothing shifted. Keep it like that."
Ren looked at the young nearest the rim. It rested beneath the same piece of cover it had used in the nest.
"Enough to try the path?"
"With stops. Put them down when I ask." Eira kept her hand in the water a moment longer. "This tells us they can manage a short carry. I still need to check them on the way."
The adult remained over the brood with the exit open beside it. Ren waited before taking the weight again. Eira retrieved the sample container and packed it with the other supplies.
— • —
Ren carried the trough against his chest, both arms beneath it. Eira steadied the rim while Vesper covered the path ahead.
At the broken stretches, a light Water working kept the surface from surging against the young. He set the carrier down on the footing he had prepared whenever they needed to change position. Eira checked the water after each pause.
It cooled on the descent. At her direction, he fed a low Fire working through the stone and held it there until she told him to ease back.
At the shoulder, Vesper went first. She watched the crest from cover and signaled them across. Ren and Eira carried the trough together, moving at the same pace until the slope hid them again.
They reached the landing with time left for the inspection. Ren kept the warmth steady while Eira checked the brood and Vesper entered the collected load on the report.
— • —
The attendant arrived along the depot road. Ren checked their reference against the reply before showing them the carrier and the completed collection sheet.
Shaped stone, loose sediment, site water, loose nest cover, one adult native and its dependents. The attendant checked each entry, examining the trough and looking through the gaps beneath the cover.
"You can see the young from this side," Eira said.
They changed position without disturbing the pieces. After checking the rest of the returning gear, they signed and handed Ren his copy.
Vesper took the post. Tarin remained on the bank, with Ward and Keep in the channel below.
"We’ll be back at the arranged time," Ren told her.
The frame opened on schedule. He and Eira carried the trough through together.

At the cove, Eira checked the water before Ren reduced the Fire working. They carried the load up through the flower field to the Worldroot, keeping clear of the princess’s pocket, and stopped beside the sheltered strip behind the stone barrier.
Eira tested the water at her marks and checked the depth against the carrier.
"Enough room for them here. We’ll need more cover along the bank."
The planted ground was beside the strip, clear of the place she chose for the brood. Ren compared the adult’s shell with the space between the bank and the blocks. It could turn there without crossing into the stronger current.
Ren lowered the trough into the strip. As the home water rose around it, he eased away the remaining warmth and the Water working. Eira watched the surface settle without his help.
He submerged the low rim and held the carrier level. Eira placed spare cover beside the opening, leaving the occupied pieces inside undisturbed.
The broodshell gathered one young under its fringe and crossed into the sheltered water. Ren kept his hands beneath the trough as it passed. The adult settled the young beneath the cover, returned, and brought out another.
Eira moved each vacated piece into the strip. By the time the last young left the carrier, there was cover waiting for it beside the others.
The broodshell followed and pressed one piece down with the edge of its shell.
"They’ve settled behind the stones, Ren."
Kaia spoke privately. Ren watched the fringe lift and settle in the quiet water, then removed the empty trough. On the bank sketch, he marked where they needed more cover.
— • —
The adult explored the strip while its young remained sheltered.
It followed the blocks, turned where the current strengthened, and came back along the bank. At the brood it adjusted a piece of cover before settling over them again.
Ren knelt nearby, one hand resting at the water’s edge.
After a while, the broodshell left the covered young and approached him. Its fringe rose from the shallows and rested against the back of his hand.
[SUBJECT REQUEST RECEIVED.]
He asked the System privately whether the request included the young.
[THE REQUEST CONCERNS THE ADULT ALONE.]
Ren left his hand where it was.
"A Subject is bound to my world and to me," he said. "The bond gives you access to the world’s support and helps you grow. In return, you’ll have duties. I’ll assign work according to what you can do. Some Subjects may be sent to fight."
He paused between the conditions, holding the intent of each as plainly as he had for the other creatures that had approached him.
"You keep your own thoughts. The bond prevents betrayal, and you cannot disclose what it reveals about my talent."
The fringe remained against his hand.
"Another world-lord cannot take you from me. If I die, the bond ends."
He looked toward the covered brood.
"This request is yours alone. Your young stay unbound. You can all live here whether you accept or not."
He waited. The broodshell turned toward the young, then back to him. Its fringe lifted and touched his hand again. The request remained.
Ren accepted.
[BONDED: 80/1,500.]
The fringe slipped from his hand. The broodshell crossed back to the cover and settled over its young.
"Cradle," he said.
[NAME: CRADLE.]
Eira checked the strip once more while Ren washed out the empty carrier. The young remained beneath their cover, with Cradle over them and water moving gently past the stones.
She added the new checks to her notes and marked the cover on the bank sketch. Ren kept the signed collection copy with those pages; the adult, its young and everything they had carried were accounted for.
Then they went down to the cove for their return crossing.
— • —
The office opened the connection at the appointed time. Ren and Eira carried the empty trough back onto the receiving shelf.
Vesper was at the post. Ward held beside the shelf with Keep mounted, and Mistwhisker rested near the supplies. Tarin came down the bank as Ren set the carrier down.
"Someone stopped on the depot road while you were across," it said.
"Did they come down?"
"No. They watched, then left."
Tarin showed him where the stranger had stood. From there, the shelf and the gate were both in view.
