Ren checked the habitat record’s approach notes before they left the landing.

The works were the third point on the supplier’s route to the nesting site. He went back to the first two. The description of the first matched the landing shelf. The second placed the end of a paved road beneath a low rise, beside narrowing water.

He had stood there: the final survey stake, the broken slabs and the channel too shallow for Ward to continue.

"Past the depot again," Vesper said, reading beside him.

"To the road’s end. Then we check the water side of the rise. The notes follow an old cut uphill from there."

"The yard’s beyond the rise."

"We stay on this side. If the approach takes us through it, we come back."

He gave Tarin the water group’s orders. Riptide would check the last deep stretch before Ward entered it. Mistwhisker would stay there with the supplies, and Tarin would bring everyone back to the landing if the land party missed its return time.

Vesper entered the time on her slate, leaving enough for that withdrawal and the next report.

Beyond the depot, the slabs grew fewer and the stakes stood farther apart. Ren led along the inland edge of the road, with Eira behind him and Vesper watching the rear. Riptide checked ahead of Ward in the channel beside them.

At the final stake, Ren stopped to examine the broken paving.

The last slabs overlapped a cut stone edge running beneath them at an angle. Farther along, where the paving had fallen away, tightly fitted joints continued toward the water side of the rise. The road builders had laid their slabs over older work.

"How much older?" Vesper asked.

"This was here when they laid the road." He pointed to the overlap. "I can’t give it a date."

The cut turned away from the road along the narrowing stream, matching the approach in the notes. The works lay beyond the approved map’s coverage, but the coordinates fell within the area on their permit. Ren checked the bearing before putting the papers away.

Riptide returned from farther up the water. Beyond a deep pocket with room to turn, the channel shallowed over cut stone. Fallen rock obstructed the stretch above it.

Ward settled in the pocket with Keep dry in its cradle. Tarin took the bank beside its Lawfire, Pell waited in the shallows, and Vesper left Mistwhisker on firm ground by the supplies.

"Hold here," Ren told Tarin. "If we’re late, back to the landing."

Tarin confirmed the order. Ren checked the spore in his coat before taking Eira and Vesper up the bank.

A dry stone trough ran above the stream, with a maintenance ledge cut beside it. Ren followed the ledge uphill, keeping below the rise’s crest. Eira stayed between him and Vesper.

The yard lay beyond the rise they had watched from earlier. The slope screened them from that direction, but the ledge briefly crossed an exposed shoulder. Ren stopped short of it and watched the ground above. He saw no movement.

They crossed one at a time, with Vesper watching until Eira had reached cover. Ren waited on the other side where he could see both women and the way ahead.

Plants had spread into the dry trough. He found no fresh tracks along the ledge, though much of its surface was bare stone. They moved without disturbing the stems wherever there was room to pass.

Beyond the shoulder, the ground dropped away beneath them. From the ledge, Ren could see the far slope but not the bottom of the hollow.

"The stone lip should be lower down," he said, checking the approach notes. "We haven’t got a view of it."

"Or of anyone watching from it," Vesper said.

Ren stayed back from the edge. Vesper marked the drop on her sketch, and they continued along the sheltered side of the trough.

The cut ended at a stone-lined basin sunk into the slope.

Two channels entered it. The dry one they had followed was blocked near its mouth by silt and fallen rock, with weeds rooted through the fill. The second came from higher ground on the far side, carrying a narrow flow into the basin.

Vertical slots faced each other in the channel walls near the water. Ren crouched beside the nearer pair and followed their depth with his eyes. A panel lowered between them would obstruct the flow. Nothing remained in the slots.

"Sluices," Vesper said, adding them to her drawing.

Across the basin, water spilled through a notch in the rim. It ran over exposed stone and disappeared down the slope into the hollow they could not see.

Ren followed it as far as the edge allowed. "That’s the overflow."

Vesper marked its direction and stopped the line where it passed out of sight. The water might reach the lower works, but they could not yet trace it all the way there.

Eira knelt beside the flowing channel. A dark film covered the wet bed, and small stems grew along the margin. She compared them with the weeds in the blocked channel, leaning close without pulling anything free.

"Different growth here," she said. "These follow the waterline. The weeds over there are rooted in the fill."

"Anything you recognize?"

"No."

Vesper sketched the basin, its channels and a stair descending along the inner wall. She added the ledge they had used and the turn below the shoulder, leaving the concealed ground blank.

The name on the cargo sheet made more sense here. Enough of the cistern’s waterworks remained intact to collect the flow and send the excess downslope.

The maintenance stair descended to a narrow landing beside the basin’s waterline.

Ren inspected it from above before starting down. The upper steps rested against the wall, but farther below, erosion had hollowed the projecting edges. From a supported tread, he could see daylight beneath the outer half of the next.

He checked where that tread joined the wall. The stone continued beneath it there, leaving a narrow strip of supported footing.

"Keep against the wall," he said. "Leave the outside edges alone."

He descended first, checking the remaining steps before signaling Eira down. Vesper followed with room between them. At the bottom, they stood along the landing without crowding its edge.

A fitted stone closure occupied the wall beside it. Its joints formed a doorway, but the surface sat flush with the surrounding blocks. There was no handle.

Ren looked along the seam, then toward the flowing channel. It entered the basin through a stone housing farther along the landing.

"The water goes under that frame, Ren," Kaia said privately.

He moved closer. The wet channel’s slots were accessible from the landing. Beneath the housing’s crosspiece, water slipped into the basin. Above it, curved grooves met and crossed in a carved pattern.

Ren stopped in front of them.

He remembered the permitted landing on the Old Ladder: the square beneath his feet, the attendant beside the rail and his hand held near a carving in the spire. These grooves had the same arrangement of crossing lines and outward curves that he recalled.

He had no drawing from that inspection to compare. He followed the lines without touching them, then raised his hand and held it near the stone.

One curve lit pale beneath his fingers.

It occupied the part of the pattern where he remembered the Ladder’s light. The water continued beneath the frame, and the closure beside him stayed shut.

Ren silently asked the System what had prompted the response.

[RECOGNITION: BLOODLINE.]

He kept his question about the entrance private too, asking what was required to enter through the fitted closure.

[ENTRY PERMITTED TO ONE RECOGNIZED CLAIMANT. ACCOMPANYING PERSONS AND DEPLOYMENT OF BONDED SUBJECTS PROHIBITED.]

He read the condition once more. Vesper and Eira could not follow him through it. Nor could he arrange for the water group to join him inside. The answer supplied no duration and no description of what lay beyond the stone.

Ren lowered his hand. The light faded, and he held his fingers beside the dark stone for a moment before drawing them back.

"I’ve seen a similar mark before," he told Vesper. "This one responded to me. The entry condition allows one claimant, with no accompanying people or Subjects deployed inside."

Eira looked toward the closure. "Through there?"

"Yes. I haven’t tried to open it."

Vesper glanced back toward the stair. "How would you call for help? Could you send a report out?"

"I haven’t established that. We need the outside arrangements settled before I decide anything."

He took out his route notes and drew the carving while it was in front of him, checking each crossing against the stone. He marked the curve that had answered his hand. When he returned to Dawnspire, he would have something to compare with the Ladder carving instead of relying on memory.

Vesper checked her slate as he finished.

"Time to go."

Ren put the drawing away. They climbed the stair along the supported wall side and gathered at the top, where the ledge led back toward Ward.

He looked once more at the closure. Water continued beneath the marked frame beside it.

If he went through, the others would have to stay outside.
