The approval arrived with the conditions and a survey map attached.

Access approved: restricted region. Party deployment authorized through a temporary gate between the holder’s world and the approved landing. Conditions attached.

Ren read the conditions first. Equipment had to be declared, its provenance recorded, and everything brought back would be inspected. The party had to report through the landing at the listed intervals. Messages could reach them there; beyond it, the office guaranteed no contact.

The gate arrangement was included in the approval. The survey office would install it with his permission, linking the cove directly to the landing in the restricted region.

He opened the map, checked the landing against the deployment sheet, and made copies for Iris and Lyra.

Nothing had arrived from the Old Ladder. He left the request for its terms pending. To the office asking to survey Ward and Wake’s habitat, he sent a short reply: he would reconsider the request after his expedition returned.

Ren met the installer on campus and accompanied them into his world. They reached the cove at low water, carrying the fittings down to the strip where the Muster’s frame had stood.

The installer checked Ren’s written permission against the new clearance, then laid the fittings out on the sand.

"Two fixed ends," they said. "Here and the approved landing. Your party returns through the landing gate. That’s also where you send your reports."

"The depth there?"

They showed him the survey measurements: the approach channel, an unloading shelf, and the ground above it. Ren checked the width and depth against Ward’s loaded passage, then asked about room to turn. The landing offered less space than the cove, but enough to bring Ward alongside the shelf.

"What happens if we lose access to it?"

"You’d have to regain it before bringing the party back. We can’t move the far anchor to meet you."

"And my Guild route?"

"Separate. It doesn’t authorize your fragment-born Subjects to enter the main plane."

Ren watched the installer secure the frame across the waterline. Light ran through its joints as each fitting seated; the opening stayed dark. The office would activate the connection at the time on his sheet, once both ends were ready.

He accompanied the installer out before returning to the Worldroot.

The craftsperson had examined the bank with Ren’s sketch in hand and chosen the stone for it. Now it stood knee-deep beyond the roots, fitting short blocks into an angled line from the bank.

The blocks rose above the surface, turning the current past the proposed shelter. The craftsperson shifted one twice, watching the water around its end, then checked the joints with its hand. The line stopped short of the roots, leaving Loom’s flow through the pocket clear.

"Behind this," it said, pointing to the bank. "That’s the water it shelters."

Ren crouched where the stone met the bank and put his hand beneath the surface.

On his first visit, the current had pressed against his fingers here. He held them apart in the water behind the barrier, waited, then withdrew his hand.

"It’s quiet there now, Ren," Kaia said privately.

He went around to the pocket side and checked there too. Loom’s current still passed his fingers, following its usual course through the shallows.

Eira knelt beside his open sketch. She checked the marked points herself, then reached into the sheltered water at two places and added them to the drawing.

"Still warm near the roots," she said. "It drops farther out, where you marked it. These two behind the stone feel the same as the near stretch."

"They need checking while we’re gone."

"I’ve added them to the list."

The princess rested against the submerged root, her pale-gold outline softened in sleep. Wick’s light lay across the water beside her. The roots remained within her reach, carrying the Worldroot’s support while the craftsperson gathered its tools from the bank.

Ren marked the barrier’s position on the sketch. The sheltered strip was still within the ground he had inspected; anything larger would need another examination. He left the dimensions open until they knew what creature would have to fit there.

Before leaving, he took sand and silt from behind the stone in one container and water in another. He sealed and labeled both with their collection points. They could compare them with the water and ground at the recorded site, if they reached it.

The party gathered at the cove beside the equipment laid out for declaration.

Ward would carry Keep in its cradle and the heavier supplies. Riptide would take the smaller loads across water, with Pell on short runs. Tarin handled transfers and crossings where the others needed steady footing. Vesper commanded on the ground, with Mistwhisker beside her; Eira handled treatment and could stop a run if someone needed care. Keep’s reports would carry their age, as they had throughout the Muster.

Ren checked the gear against the list: cradle, straps, cargo pack, containers, Eira’s kit, slates, the habitat record, and the bank sketch. He added the two sealed samples and their collection details before signing.

"Only the declared equipment goes through," he said. "If you find unfamiliar machinery or loose components, leave them where they are and report them. Don’t add anything to a pack without checking with me."

Vesper glanced down the list. "I’ll check the loads before we move them."

"And keep the unloading space clear between arrivals."

She nodded. That was already in her notes.

Bolt and Snap would hold the cove and northern landing. Wake stayed with the pod. Loom and Wick remained at the pocket, where the Worldroot’s support would continue through the roots.

Ren turned to Eira. "The tender?"

"Agreed to stay with her. We went through the checks together, from my place on the stone. It knows which marks to use for the warmth and where to send word if anything changes."

"Including behind the barrier."

"Including there. The instructions and contact are in the recess."

The Tide tender had offered when Eira explained they would be leaving. Ren had asked it to take the routine observations, with any change reported through his contact to the landing. Eira’s drawings would give it something to compare against. The empty medium jar remained beside the handling sheets; there was no further administration to attempt.

The craftsperson returned to its stone, and the Hearth keepers continued tending their own fires. Vesper began checking the straps while Ren went to meet Iris and Lyra.

At the Terrace, Iris took the conditions sheet along with the map.

"The contacts?"

Ren gave her his declared address and the survey office’s. "Messages go through the landing. We’ll send reports at the intervals on that sheet. If one doesn’t arrive, take the copies to Halvern."

"The first missed report?"

"The first. You don’t have to wait for another."

She marked the reporting clause. "And inspection on return covers everything you bring out."

"Yes."

Lyra spread the map between them, finding the landing before following the road inland.

"Keep enough time to get back to this," she said, resting her finger on the gate marker.

"That’s where we have to report."

"Then leave time for something to go wrong on the way."

Ren nodded and let her finish reading before he gathered his own copies.

Yueying had sent word that morning. She would keep filing from the archive side and forward any reply through his contact. Iris put that address with the others.

Back at the cove, Ren laid the approved map beside the habitat record while Vesper finished the load check. The gate was still dark.

He found the last reliable site entry and checked its coordinates against the area authorized in the conditions. It fell within the boundary. The permit allowed them to survey there, though the office had supplied no mapped approach to it.

On the map, the known route ran from the landing to the depot and continued along a surveyed road. Beyond the last marked stretch, the sheet gave them nothing to follow.

Ren laid his finger beside the site’s coordinates in the older record.

The site lay past the edge of the map.
