Ren found a sheltered cove along the silver shore beyond the flower field.

Two arms of rock broke the swell, leaving a broad entrance between them. Inside, small waves reached a sandy beach with open ground above the waterline. He saw no dwellings or waiting Lawfires.

He waded in until the bottom dropped away, then swam across the deeper water while Riptide explored beneath him. Ren followed it toward the entrance, checking the width between the rocks and the turn a whale would need to make inside. The cove looked suitable, though Ward would have to test it before he committed to the site.

Back on the beach, he paced out the space above the wet sand. Land entrants could wait here without crowding the channel, and there was room to receive someone who couldn’t walk. He marked the proposed gate position with a stone, then went up to the Worldroot.

From the higher roots, he could see the cove’s entrance and the beach behind it. A gate across that waterline would be visible from here.

He went down once more to check the line between the marked position and the deep water. A returning whale would need to clear the opening without blocking the land entrants beside it. Ren moved the marker farther along the beach and amended the sketch before going to Halvern.

— • —

Halvern examined the sketch and Ren’s notes on the depth.

"The assessor will check the site before installation. Have your candidates ready for the same visit."

"When should I bring them?"

"I’ll send you the appointment." Halvern handed him the assessment schedule. "The deployment cap is eighteen."

Ren opened it beside his copy of the notice.

"Per squad," Halvern continued. "You can register a wider roster, then choose from it before each round. Once the round starts, no substitutions or additions."

"The task is announced before we choose?"

"Yes. Your declared squad must fit within eighteen, whatever the task."

Ren tucked the schedule inside the notice. He could assess several combinations without committing to the same team for every arena.

The elder gathered the interested Pyreborn on Tide’s second platform.

Tidefire waited near the water, with Glassfire and Bloomfire farther along the ring. Ren recognized the two haulers among them. The elder stepped aside as he approached, leaving him room to address the group directly.

"A Subject is bound to my world and to me," he said. "The bond gives you access to the world’s support and helps you grow. In return, you’ll have duties. Hauling, tending, scouting, defending the settlements—I’ll assign work according to what you can do. Some of you may be sent to fight."

He looked along the platform before continuing.

"You keep your own thoughts. The bond prevents betrayal, and you cannot disclose what it reveals about my talent. Another world-lord cannot take you from me. If I die, the bond ends."

A Glassfire near the rail asked whether its existing work counted toward those duties. Ren asked what it repaired, listened to the answer and told it to keep that work on its list. He would need people who knew the damaged platforms as well as those willing to patrol unfamiliar water.

The elder repeated the conditions for those standing farther back.

"Ordinary residents can stay ordinary residents," Ren said. "Your homes don’t depend on accepting."

One of the haulers came forward with the other beside it.

"We carry between the Hearths. Will you need us on those roads?"

"Yes. And between here and the northern shore."

"How much faster will we grow?"

"I can’t give you a rate. The bond adds support you don’t receive as an ordinary resident."

They spoke briefly to each other, then the first offered its hand. Ren checked the request and accepted. When he opened the registry, a name appeared.

[NAME: ORUN.]

The second followed.

[NAME: SETHE.]

Ren assigned them to coordinate loads with the guides. They went down to the landing together while the others continued asking the elder questions.

The Quickfire courier arrived with a message from the Nightfire. After delivering it, it came to Ren.

"Do you need more messages carried?"

"Messages and scouting. Both shores."

"I want the bond."

Ren accepted its request and checked the new entry.

[NAME: PELL.]

"The distance between your stops has changed," he said. "Show me your longest controlled burst."

Pell returned to its flame and accelerated away from the ring. It passed the first outcrop without stopping, continued beyond the second and slowed before turning back. Ren watched where it stopped to recover, then used Read when it returned.

[QUICKFIRE — PELL.]

[TALENT: LONG BURST.]

The reading identified an awakened talent that extended its sustained burst. Ren had seen the longer runs before accepting the bond; he would have Pell establish its reliable range before assigning distant routes around it.

Tarin waited near the steps.

"You’re being assessed for the Muster," Ren told it. "Keep the guide runs covered while you train."

"What ground will we fight on?"

"We learn that before each round. Prepare for more than open water."

"And my work inside?"

"Directing the water group. Moving them, holding a position and getting them out when needed."

"Who commands the whole team?"

"I’ll settle that after the first drill."

Tarin nodded and went to arrange the next runs.

On the return journey, Ren took Riptide’s sheet out to the pod.

One of the pod’s older whales surfaced beside him. He recognized it from the crossings as it rolled, bringing one eye above the water. Its call passed through the sheet beneath his feet, and several whales farther out answered.

Ren remained still while it approached. The intent to join him reached through the contact, followed by the System’s confirmation of a request.

Before accepting, he used Read.

[STAGE: FIVE.]

The whale had advanced since the earlier reading he remembered. Conversion had preserved its strength; this was growth beyond that, already present before the bond.

Ren knelt and rested a hand above its eye. He made sure it understood the work he expected—carrying, rescue and defence—then accepted the request.

"Wake," he said, recording the name.

The whale submerged and came up beyond the sheet, waiting while Riptide turned toward the northern shore.

— • —

The other acceptances took place over the following preparation sessions.

Five more whales joined Wake. Six rays approached in the shallows, and twelve fish were registered individually, each request confirmed separately. Ren checked their readings before accepting and recorded which waters they knew and what work they could perform.

At the landing, the Tidefire came in small groups between their existing runs. Eighteen joined in all, including Orun and Sethe. One household asked whether its young would share the adults’ bonds.

"No," Ren told them. "Your request is for you."

He explained the duties again where anyone was uncertain, then entered the adults who asked. Their young remained residents with them.

Eight Glassfire joined after inspecting their old ring. The craftsperson continued cutting stone on the northern shore without requesting a bond. Three more Quickfire followed Pell, and six Bloomfire took tending assignments among the surviving plants and the ground Ren wanted them to examine.

The Stillfire keeper attended one gathering near the beach, listened and returned to its place by the water.

After the final acceptance, Ren checked the total against his list: twenty-four ocean creatures and thirty-six Pyreborn added to the nineteen already bound.

[BONDED: 79/1,500.]

Orun and Sethe knew which households still had loads waiting on either shore. Ren had them compare their lists before assigning another whale to the route. Pell would carry reports between the groups, leaving Tarin time to train without abandoning the guides who depended on it.

He divided the new work between the guide routes, settlement repairs, tending and patrols. Only a few of those names went onto the separate list for Muster assessment.

Before the assessor’s visit, Ren treated Ward’s tail.

The whale rested beside the landing while Balm shifted enough to expose the injured area. The torn skin had closed, but the flesh beneath remained tight when Ward flexed. Ren lowered his left hand and followed the damaged muscle with a controlled Life working.

Balm’s support had kept the wound steady. Ren worked through the remaining injury a little at a time, pausing to have Ward move the tail before continuing. The resistance eased gradually. By the time he stopped, the muscle contracted without pulling the tail short on one side.

Ren kept his hand in place through another gentle contraction, watching for the same pull along the old tear. This time both sides moved together. He eased the working down and had Ward repeat it without the active flow before he finished.

Balm moved clear of the healed area.

Ren laid his right palm over it and felt the muscle flex beneath his hand. Ward held the movement, then relaxed. Ren lifted his palm before the whale pushed away from the landing.

Ward swam into the deeper water and turned in both directions. On its return, the tail drove evenly through the last stroke.

"Again, farther out," Ren said.

He watched the second turn before leading Ward toward the cove to test its approach.

— • —

The assessor arrived at the appointed time with a slate and a long grey case. Ren accompanied them into his world and down to the cove.

They walked the beach, checked the channel and asked where extracted entrants would be received. Ren indicated the clear sand for land casualties and the sheltered depth for Ward. The assessor watched the whale enter and turn before approving the location.

The frame was assembled across the waterline, spanning both the beach approach and the channel. Its width left room for Ward to pass without folding a fin against the stone. When the last fittings were secured, the opening remained dark.

"The event controls the connection," the assessor said. "Your approved entrants use it for staging, deployment and return. It will be closed when the arrangement ends."

Ren marked a clear strip beside the frame while the assessor checked its fittings. The waiting entrants moved back from the beach approach, leaving the route to deep water unobstructed. He wanted the same space kept clear whenever a squad was inside the arena.

They set the empty case aside and opened the assessment slate.

Ward went first.

The assessor examined the healed tail, then had Ward swim, turn and stop against a current Riptide maintained through the channel. They watched its recovery after each movement before requesting a controlled strike into clear water.

Ward’s tail drove down. Water surged toward the empty end of the beach and washed back around the rock arm.

The assessor recorded its defensive capacity, movement and striking force, then checked the results.

"Cleared. Weight six."

Ren looked from the slate to Ward.

"That’s field capability under the event’s standard," the assessor said. "The same scale applies to every squad."

Keep was examined separately. The assessor had marked carriers move between the beach and the channel while testing its reports, noting the delay before entering a weight of two.

Tarin followed. At the assessor’s direction, it demonstrated its spear work in the shallows, then crossed the cove in its Lawfire and returned under control. They asked for another pass against the current before recording the result.

"Three."

Vesper had arrived with Mistwhisker, and Eira waited beside her with her wrap secured. Ren called them forward when the water assessments were finished.

The assessor checked Mistwhisker’s declared relationship with Vesper, then evaluated their abilities together. They were entered as a single declared unit at three. Eira was assessed at two after explaining and demonstrating the treatment she could provide in the field.

"Medical priorities are yours," Ren told her afterward. "Tell the team who needs treatment and when someone can’t continue. Vesper needs to know your limits before we drill."

Eira looked toward Ward. "I can’t promise to handle an injury that size inside a round. If it needs prolonged treatment, we have to get it out."

"Make that clear to everyone."

The remaining readings went onto the roster: Anvil three; Riptide, Bolt, Snap and Lantern two each; Knock one. Wake’s assessment placed it at six, and Pell’s extended burst and scouting capability earned a weight of two.

Thirteen declared entries, thirty-six points altogether. The six-point whales gave Ren alternatives, but using both would leave only six for every other role.

The assessor reviewed the completed sheet with him.

"You choose your squad before each round. Once it begins, the roster for that round is closed."

Ren took the signed assessment and accompanied them back out. The remaining Subjects stayed at the cove for the drill.

— • —

His first squad used the full eighteen: Ward and Keep, Vesper with Mistwhisker, Eira, Tarin and Snap.

Bolt and Anvil took positions at the far end as the opposition. Ren marked a stone above the waterline and set the task: reach it, hold the position and bring Snap back if it was marked down. The drill was controlled, with attacks stopped short of contact.

Keep’s spores travelled with Vesper, Eira and Snap. Ren watched from beside the gate while the squad moved off.

The first report placed Bolt near the far rock arm. Vesper advanced along the beach with Mistwhisker ahead, while Tarin took Ward toward the channel to cut off the approach from the water.

Bolt had already moved by the time the report reached them.

Tarin spotted it nearer the middle of the cove and changed direction. Ward’s turn carried the water group away from the beach just as Vesper passed the narrow stretch beside the rocks. Eira stopped short of the disturbed shallows, unable to follow the route Vesper had taken.

Vesper reached the marked stone with Mistwhisker. Snap remained near the water group, and Eira was still on the approach when Anvil moved to cut her off.

Ren called a halt.

He brought them back to the sand and had Vesper and Tarin explain their movements. Vesper had acted on Keep’s last position report. Tarin had seen Bolt move and responded without telling her that the water group was changing course.

"Vesper commands inside," Ren said. "Set the objective and the route, then keep the groups informed when either changes."

He turned to Tarin.

"You direct the water group under her. If you see something she hasn’t, report it. Don’t assume she can see why you’re turning."

Tarin looked back at the channel, then nodded.

"Eira decides treatment priorities and tells you when an entrant can’t continue. Give her a route to reach them or bring them to her."

Vesper crouched beside the marks left by their first approach.

"How old was Bolt’s position when we received it?"

Ren had her compare the report with what Tarin had seen. They agreed to call out observations as they made them and identify delayed positions by the last confirmed movement. Where the age was uncertain, Vesper would ask for a fresh visual check before committing the squad. Keep’s delay remained something they had to plan around.

They reset the exercise.

This time, Vesper held at the narrow approach until Tarin confirmed Bolt’s position. She sent the water group to hold the channel and took Eira along the beach with her. Snap reached the stone behind them, with Ward covering the waterward approach.

When Ren marked Snap down, Vesper called the withdrawal. Tarin kept the channel open while Eira checked Snap and the others brought it back through the gap.

Ren ended the drill when the whole squad reached the starting mark. They had completed the same task without leaving anyone cut off.

— • —

Halvern reviewed the assessed roster in his garden while there was still time to file it.

The thirteen entries filled the first sheet. Ren had attached the squad from the drill and a note that selections would change according to the announced task, always within eighteen.

"You’ve assessed both whales," Halvern said.

"I don’t need to send the same one every time. And some rounds may call for neither."

Halvern checked the signed figures, then returned the papers.

"The registration desk will take these."

Ren carried them across campus and waited while the clerk checked the entries against the assessor’s record. The clerk retained the roster and handed him the receipt.

He filed it with the schedule. The first arena would decide which of them he sent.
