The hand was cold, its stone as smooth as the rim beneath Ren’s feet.

Then he was watching water pass through the notch again. He saw its polished curve, then the rough edge it had once been, with waves breaking against stone that had yet to wear into a hollow.

There was too much between those moments. Every change carried the stretch of time through which it had happened, and Ren couldn’t follow one without becoming aware of more. He tried to stay with the first groove as it deepened, lost it among the waves, then found himself watching an edge that was still unbroken.

The witness’s hand remained against his. Ren could barely feel it now. He reached for the part he had almost understood, trying to follow the stone through the wearing, and lost track of his next breath.

[CAUSE OF DEATH: TIME.]

— • —

Ren woke on his back among the flowers, drawing air into his chest.

"Nineteen."

Kaia said it quietly. He heard her, but stayed where he was while the sky came into focus above him.

[REVIVALS REMAINING TODAY: ZERO.]

Something of the contact remained. He kept still, afraid that reaching for anything else would scatter it before he could understand.

He could no longer follow the whole stretch the witness had shared. There were pieces: water crossing a rough edge, a shallow groove, the polished notch beside the seated figure. Between them, he could still feel the duration that had overwhelmed him.

He tried to return to one part of it and found that forcing the memory only made him lose his place. Ren let it settle and followed the smaller stretch he could retain. The stone changed gradually there, and he could stay with it without reaching for every wave at once.

Ren brought the three workings he knew alongside that experience.

Quickfire compressed its burning into bursts. Stillfire let the process advance slowly, while Agefire accelerated deterioration in what its fire touched. He had followed each effect separately, looking for a rule he could apply across all three.

Now he could follow the process between the changes as well. The notch had taken shape across a stretch he had briefly experienced, far beyond the separate waves he could remember. Quick and slow described how something progressed through that duration. Aging carried earlier changes forward into what came next.

He held the connection as the memories shifted, following it from the stone to the workings he had grafted. This time, he could keep it when he moved from one to another.

[TIME: 0.50%.]

Ren read the number without getting up. His attention had already returned to the breath moving through his chest.

He remembered the end of his life on Earth, before he had ever lived in this body. Then the outlying rock in the Burning Sea, golden-white light and the wound through his chest. He had carried the memory of the first ending into the life that reached the second.

Now he lay in the flower field again, remembering the cold hand and the water it had shown him.

The field had changed between his returns. So had he. The experiences of one life remained with him in the next, even across the deaths that had ended his awareness of the body he was in.

Ren followed that continuity through his own memories. He could remember arriving here after the Dawnfire and worrying about the people still on the rock. That worry, the orders he had given and what he had learned afterward were all still his.

The contact had ended his breathing, but he had brought part of its experience back into another breath.

[LAW RECOGNIZED: REINCARNATION.]

[NO MATCHING STRUCTURE IN SYSTEM RECORDS. ORIGIN: HOST.]

[STAGE SIX REQUIREMENTS: ALL MET.]

He read the recognition again, keeping the name to himself.

Ouroboros had made his returns possible long before he understood them. The witness’s duration had helped him recognize a structure in what he had lived through, something he had never found in an Ember or a working.

The System had no matching record. Ren looked at that line for a moment, then at the one beneath it.

He had met the requirements for Six. Time had been the last missing piece, and the number was there even when he read it again. He could begin the breakthrough.

He had pictured that moment while studying the requirements, but now the empty space where Keep’s presence should have been kept drawing his attention. Ward and Snap had last seen him walking between the stone basins. They had no way to know what he had learned, or whether he had returned safely.

First, he needed his people home.

— • —

He reached for Keep and found no response. The group was still beyond the arch, where the link could not reach him from here.

Ren sat up, brushed the flowers from his clothes and walked down to the waterline. He waited beside the arch until Ward came through with Keep riding between his shoulders and Snap following sideways behind him.

Ren met them in the shallows. He checked Ward’s flank and the old welt, then ran his eyes along Snap’s claws and carapace. Keep was settled in its cradle, with no visible damage to the spore.

The connection returned once they were on the same side. Ren waited while the account reached him in separate impressions: the link falling silent, Ward turning from the landing, Spear leading them toward Tide. Then the Hearth’s platforms, the others waiting there, and the route back to the shelf.

They had withdrawn as instructed. Ward had brought Keep home after reaching Tide safely, and nothing in the account suggested that anyone had followed them.

Ren rested his hand against Ward while the final impressions settled. He had wanted to ask about the witness, but the group had left it behind to carry out his orders. They had an account of the withdrawal, and that was what he needed first.

"Go back with Spear," he said. "Bring everyone from Tide, Anvil and Balm too. Keep stays here with me."

He lifted the cradle carefully from Ward’s back and set it on the sand. Ward remained beside him until he had checked that it was secure, then turned toward the arch with Snap.

Ren watched them cross before carrying Keep up toward the Worldroot.

— • —

He ate while he waited, with the cradle beside him and the arch visible down the hill. Once the food was gone, he stayed there, occasionally reaching toward Keep without finding any news from the other side.

Movement at the arch brought him to his feet.

Riptide came through first, followed by Bolt and Lantern. Ren reached the beach as Mosaic crossed behind them, then stood clear while Saber, Ribbon, Wick and Loom followed.

Knock brushed the arch-stone on the way through and turned toward him. Anvil came more slowly, with Balm still spread along the damaged shell. Ren crouched to check the crack when the crab reached the shallows; it had not visibly worsened during the journey.

Ward and Snap returned last. Ren looked past them, waited for the water to settle, then turned back toward the group.

Keep was home, and Hearth had never left. With the others gathered along the shore, all Fifteen were accounted for.

Ren stayed among them long enough to check the ones he had left at Tide. Then he moved Keep’s cradle closer to Ward and indicated the beach.

Anvil settled where the water was shallow enough to leave the damaged edge of its shell exposed. Balm remained spread over it, and Ren gave them room as the others moved past. He checked the cradle once more, turning it slightly until it sat level on the sand beside the whale.

"Stay here."

The keeper and the courier remained with the Pyreborn. Ren had asked for his Subjects to return, leaving the people of the Hearths to decide their own movements.

He went to the arch for a final look before settling in at home.

— • —

Ren stepped onto the fragment’s shelf, with the Fifteen waiting on the other side. Spear stood below in the shallows. He raised a hand to it, then stopped at the change across the water.

Every flame he could see was leaning in the same direction.

Red, blue and white fires bent toward the middle of the sea, continuing beyond the nearest islands until smoke hid the water. Farther away, a broad glow spread beneath that smoke, brighter than anything he had seen there on the journey to the witness.

Ren stayed on the shelf and watched the nearer flames. They held their lean while small ripples passed beneath them.

He remembered the survey when the arch first opened: the strongest presence in the fragment had been dormant.

[THE STRONGEST PRESENCE: AWAKE.]

[CLASSIFICATION: PENDING.]

The glow gave him no clear outline to study. He could see the light spreading under the smoke and the flames turned toward it, but nothing that told him what had woken or how far its reach extended.

Ren lowered his hand and stepped back through the arch. Ward was still near Keep on the home shore, with the others gathered in the shallows around them.

He would make the breakthrough before going back.
