The flame at the platform’s edge rose into a body no taller than Ren’s waist.

It was narrow and yellow-white, with a bright coal inside its chest. Its Lawfire remained on the water as it stepped onto the stone and paused beside the Steamfire hauler.

[RACE: PYREBORN.]

[HEARTFLAME: QUICKFIRE.]

[HEARTFLAME GRADE: FLAME.]

[LAW COMPOSITION: FIRE / TIME.]

[DANGER TO HOST: MODERATE.]

Ren read the fourth line twice. A source of Time stood a few steps away, the same grade as Spear.

The courier touched the bead in the hauler’s hand, then moved among the travelers in short bursts. It stopped beside the Tidefire family, bent toward their Cinders and exchanged a few sounds with the adults. Only after it had checked the others did it turn to Ren.

Spear joined them. The courier spoke to it first, then addressed Ren while pointing out past the island.

[CONCEPT: HEARTH. GONE.]

[CONCEPT: OURS. BEYOND. WAIT.]

[CONCEPT: WATER. DEAD.]

[CONCEPT: CARRY.]

Ren looked from the people on the platform to the water. There were more waiting beyond whatever had happened to the crossing.

The hauler pointed at the travelers, then traced a route toward Tide.

[CONCEPT: BEFORE. CROSS.]

The courier repeated the direction it had indicated earlier.

[CONCEPT: NOW. CANNOT.]

It turned toward the hauler’s jar. The hauler opened it and carefully lifted a walnut-sized yellow-white coal into view.

[LAW EMBER: QUICKFIRE.]

[CONTAINS: FIRE / TIME.]

The courier held a hand over the opening, then touched its own chest.

[CONCEPT: OUR. OLD ONE. GONE.]

[CONCEPT: GIVE. AFTER.]

It pointed toward the stranded people. The hauler answered, indicated the courier and settled the coal back into the jar. It kept the jar beside its feet as Ren looked toward Ward.

Ren pointed at the coal once more, then at the courier. The hauler nodded toward the small Pyreborn and pushed the jar closer to it before drawing it back into safekeeping. Ren left his hands at his sides; he had been shown the payment, but they had not given it yet.

The Ember would stay here until the others were safe. Ren beckoned to Spear, then pointed out to sea.

"Show me."

— • —

He took Ward with Keep, Riptide, Lantern and Snap. Anvil stayed at Tide with its cracked shell; Balm was still attached to the recovering guard.

The courier stepped back into its Lawfire before they left. Its flame moved ahead of Spear’s raft, stopping beside rocks and stretches of open water, then returning while Ward caught up.

Ren tried to follow one burst from beginning to end. The yellow-white light swept across the surface too quickly for him to keep it centered in his vision. He caught up with it as it stopped beside a rock, waited, then moved again before the raft reached it.

He wouldn’t be keeping pace with that. He watched where it stopped instead.

The floating fires grew sparse as they traveled. Beyond a low headland, the water ahead was almost entirely dark. An empty ring of platforms stood on the far side, with no Hearthfire burning in the middle.

Between them and the platforms, three rocks rose from the sea. Small flames gathered near the farthest, where bodies huddled on the stone. The nearer two appeared empty.

Spear stopped before entering the dark stretch. Ren crouched and dipped his fingers beside the raft.

The cold bit into them. He withdrew his hand and flexed it; the water he had touched on the way to Tide had been cold, but nothing like this.

The courier manifested beside the raft, pointed toward its chest and drew its hands together. Then it returned to its flame and crossed to the nearest rock in a burst.

Its light contracted before it reached shelter. Ren watched it settle close to the rock, where it slowly brightened again. When it returned, it took the same short route and paused beside Spear until its flame recovered.

Ren looked across the remaining gaps. Speed had got it through, but Ward would take longer.

— • —

He pointed toward Riptide, then traced the route to the first rock. The courier remained in its flame while Riptide gathered a current beneath it.

Ren watched the test from the raft. The Lawfire traveled steadily across the exposed water, dimming as it went. It was visibly smaller when the current brought it against the rock’s sheltered side, but it kept burning. After a wait, its light spread back across the water.

He watched the water beyond the rock as well. Riptide had to turn the current into its lee before the flame reached it; a straight push would have carried it past the shelter. Ren pointed out the turn, and Riptide held the flow there while the courier recovered.

The courier stood up beside it and beckoned.

"Ward, alongside. Lantern and Snap, with me."

Ren transferred from the raft to Ward’s back, keeping one hand against Keep’s cradle as the whale moved. Spear stayed at the edge of the cold water.

At the first rock, Ren checked the sheltered pocket himself. The water there was warmer than the exposed stretch, though he couldn’t tell what kept it that way. He looked toward the next rock and indicated it to the courier.

It withdrew into its flame and went ahead to check. They waited for its signal before crossing, and again before approaching the far rock. Ren watched its recovery at each stop; he would not send the passengers through a longer leg just because the first had worked.

The last rock lay below the abandoned platforms. Emberfire and Steamfire adults crowded its upper surface, with three Cinders held between them. Their Lawfires burned close together in the sheltered water below.

Ren checked both sides before bringing Ward in. One dropped steeply enough for the whale to lie alongside without grounding. The other was shallow and exposed to the open sea.

He pointed to the deeper side. Ward settled there while Lantern spread silk above his back, giving the passengers cover from the wind and spray.

The adults climbed aboard carefully. Ren helped one across the gap, then watched the others pass the Cinders between them and sit closer to Ward’s middle.

One Emberfire remained standing until Ren pointed to the open place behind Keep. It sat, bracing against the whale, and drew another passenger in beside it. Ren walked along Ward’s back once, checking that everyone had something to hold and that the children were inside the adults’ reach.

Riptide gathered the Lawfires into the sheltered water beside the whale. Ren waited until every adult had boarded, then checked that none of the fires remained beneath the rock.

The courier left its Lawfire in Riptide’s current and crossed ahead in its manifested body. It stopped at the middle rock and beckoned them toward the sheltered side they had used before.

"Together," Ren told Ward and Riptide. "Stop there."

— • —

The first return leg went much like the test.

Ward carried the passengers above the water while their Lawfires moved alongside him in Riptide’s current. Ren watched the small flames contract and checked the bodies above them. The adults drew closer beneath Lantern’s silk, holding the Cinders away from the spray.

At the middle rock, Riptide guided the fires into the warmer pocket. Ward stayed beside them while their light recovered. Nobody dismounted.

Ren checked the three Cinders, then looked toward the courier. It waited until its own flame had brightened before crossing ahead to the next rock.

The second leg passed the open side of the channel between the stones. Ren could see water lifting beyond them, but Riptide was already working to keep the Lawfires together beneath Ward’s shelter.

A swell struck the whale’s exposed flank and broke across his back. A Steamfire slid sideways. It caught itself against another passenger, but the Cinder tucked against its chest washed out of its arms.

Ren saw the small light hit the water and begin to shrink.

The courier crossed from the next rock in a burst. It caught the Cinder before the swell carried it beneath Ward, holding it clear with both hands as the light inside its own chest contracted.

Ren lifted the water beneath them. The sheet rose to Ward’s back, tipped them onto it and drained away. He steadied the courier while the parent reached for its child.

"Stay in the middle."

He pointed beneath the silk. The parent drew the Cinder close, and another adult shifted beside it to block the remaining spray.

Ward reached the next rock with Riptide close against his sheltered side. The Lawfires entered the warmer pocket, the courier’s among them. Ren stayed beside the small Pyreborn while its chest brightened again.

The Cinder took longer. Its parent held it where he could see, turning slightly whenever he leaned closer. Gradually the flame spread beyond the tight little center it had become in the water.

Ren waited until it held steady before looking toward the final leg.

Spear was visible beyond the cold stretch. He pointed toward it, then back at the people still huddled beneath the silk. The courier stayed aboard this time while Riptide checked the approach.

They made the last crossing together. Spear brought the raft alongside once the Lawfires reached the warmer water, and Ren climbed down only after checking that all three Cinders were still with their parents.

— • —

Ward carried the tired passengers for the journey to Tide. Their Lawfires traveled beside him, with Riptide keeping them close whenever the water grew rough.

The courier remained with its people for most of the trip. Near Tide it went ahead, and adults were waiting on the platforms by the time Ward reached them.

Ren stayed beside the landing until the last passenger had climbed off. The Steamfire parent carried its Cinder toward the hauler, who bent close to inspect the little flame before bringing out the jar.

The hauler passed it to the courier. The courier opened it, lifted the yellow-white coal and held it out to Ren.

[CONCEPT: OLD ONE. GONE.]

[CONCEPT: YOURS.]

Ren accepted it. The coal was cool against his fingers, with none of the living courier’s sharp brightness.

[LAW EMBER ACQUIRED: QUICKFIRE.]

[ENDLESS GRAFT COMPATIBLE.]

[GRAFTING UNAVAILABLE WITHIN FRAGMENT.]

He wrapped it in water and put it away. The courier returned to the rescued group, helping the hauler make room beside the people already settled there.

Ren left Ward and the others at Tide. Spear took him to the shelf, and he crossed the arch with the Ember.

— • —

Under the Worldroot, Death opened the graft site and Life drew the wood closed around the coal.

Ren kept his hand against the root as its understanding settled into him. The burning came in short bursts separated by pauses. Within each burst, combustion completed more quickly than it should have, then the pressure eased before the next began.

He had learned how the Furnace fire sustained its feeding. This source showed him burning accelerated through Time, a relationship none of the earlier Embers had contained.

The two Laws worked together through the rhythm. Ren followed how each burst began and ended, but understanding the pattern did not mean he could move like the courier. He remembered losing sight of it between the raft and the rock, and the instant it had reached the falling Cinder.

The graft gave him something to work toward. He waited for the final warmth to settle beneath his palm before lifting his hand.

[TIME: 0.26%.]

[FIRE: 7.20%.]

He read both lines, then stood. Spear was waiting on the other side of the arch, and he still had a route to ask about.

— • —

The courier was with its people when Ren returned to the second platform. It finished helping a Steamfire settle beside the others, then came over as Spear climbed up behind him.

Ren pointed along the water, beyond the route to the old gate. He repeated the sequence he had used with the elder: Cinder, adult, elder, with a pause between each.

The courier watched, then spoke to Spear. Spear answered and pointed in the same direction as Ren.

The courier turned back to him.

[CONCEPT: TIME. SLOW. CROSSING.]

[CONCEPT: KEEPER. HOLDS.]

It raised both hands above its head, palms up, as though supporting something heavy. Ren followed the gesture and looked toward the open sea.

[CONCEPT: PEOPLE. CROSSING.]

The courier shifted its hands slightly, then held them in place again. Spear pointed at the raised arms before repeating the direction of the crossing.

[CONCEPT: CANNOT. LEAVE.]
