Becoming Lailah: Married to my Twin Sister's Billionaire Husband
Chapter 409: The First Day Out 2
"His name is Sterling," Silas reported low, scrolling through a file on his tablet. "He is a senior director at the Sovereign Guild. He recognized the Seal of the Bound Flame, My Lord. He followed us from the gallery because he believes you retrieved the seal to build an underground weapon."
Grayson stared down at the photograph. His sharp jaw tightened, a cold, annoyed expression settling over his dark features.
"An underground weapon?" Grayson repeated, his deep voice filled with flat disbelief. "He thinks I spent twelve million dollars at midnight to build a weapon?"
"He does, My Lord," Silas sighed, adjusting his glasses. "He is currently standing near the alley exit, waiting to confront you. He believes he can bargain with you for a piece of its power."
Grayson looked over his shoulder through the glass partition. Mailah was happily taking a small sip of her hazelnut latte. She had a tiny spot of sweet foam on her upper lip, her eyes bright as she looked out at the rain.
His heart did a sudden, foolish flutter. The dark, ancient demon who had ruled dark realms felt his chest swell with pure, foolish pride.
"I have eighty seconds before my wife notices I am gone," Grayson murmured, turning toward the back exit. "Handle her check, Silas. I shall resolve this nonsense immediately."
"Please do not buy his company, My Lord," Silas pleaded quietly behind him. "We already own too many auction houses."
"I make no promises," Grayson stated flatly.
Outside in the quiet alleyway, the rain fell in a soft, cold drizzle against the dark cobblestones.
Sterling stood beneath a large black umbrella, wearing his tailored grey trench coat. He was an ancient artifact broker who had spent two hundred years dealing in rare relics and dark secrets. He held his chin high, expecting a terrifying, bloodthirsty demon lord to step out of the shadows.
The metal back door opened with a soft click.
Grayson stepped out into the rain. He did not bring an umbrella. He simply stood in his dark sweater and long coat, his tall frame blocking the faint city light, his sharp face entirely calm.
Sterling straightened his posture, trying to match Grayson’s majestic presence.
"Lord Grayson," Sterling began dramatically, his voice echoing against the brick walls. "I saw what you took from the Blackwood vault. The Seal of the Bound Flame! A relic of pure protective magic. Tell me... what dark war are you preparing for? What ancient enemy requires such power?"
Grayson pulled his left sleeve back, looking down at his expensive silver watch.
"You have forty seconds," Grayson said smoothly, his deep voice carrying an unshakeable, terrifying authority. "State your business before I grow irritated."
Sterling blinked, caught off guard by Grayson’s total lack of drama. "My business? I came to offer you a deal! The Sovereign Guild will pay double what you spent for that seal. A lord of your stature has no need for defense! What could you possibly be protecting?"
Grayson looked Sterling directly in the eyes. His eyes glowed with a quiet, devastating intensity.
"My wife," Grayson stated flatly.
Sterling froze. "Your... what?"
"My wife," Grayson repeated, stepping forward into the light rain. "She is a human woman. The seal ensures that no dark entities, no stray spirits, and no annoying brokers like you ever disturb her peace."
Sterling stared at Grayson in total, wide-eyed bewilderment. "You... you spent twelve million dollars on an ancient seal... just so your wife can read her books in peace?!"
"It was twelve million well spent," Grayson declared haughtily, holding his chin high with supreme pride. "Now, listen to me very carefully."
Grayson stepped closer, his long shadow falling completely over Sterling. The air in the alley instantly turned ice-cold, the rain drops freezing into tiny ice crystals before they hit the ground.
"If you or your guild ever follow my car again," Grayson whispered, his voice dropping into a low, lethal purr that made Sterling’s knees shake, "I will buy your entire guild by noon tomorrow. I will fire your staff, lock your vaults, and turn your grand headquarters into a private indoor park for her physical therapy exercises. Do you understand me?"
Sterling swallowed hard, trembling under the sheer weight of Grayson’s ancient power. "I... I understand, Lord Grayson! I will leave immediately!"
"Good," Grayson said coldly. "Now get out of my alley. You are wasting my coffee time."
Sterling didn’t say another word. He turned on his heel and practically ran down the street, his heavy umbrella splashing through the puddles.
Grayson pulled a clean silk handkerchief from his coat pocket, calmly drying his hands. He checked his watch.
"Seventy-two seconds," Grayson muttered to himself with deep satisfaction. "Flawless execution."
Thirty seconds later, the small brass bell above the cafe door chimed softly.
Grayson walked back into the warm, cozy interior of the cafe. His majestic stride was smooth, his sharp face completely relaxed as if he had merely gone outside to check the weather.
When he reached the booth, Mailah looked up, a sweet smile lighting up her face.
"That was fast," Mailah said cheerfully. "Did you sign your super-important corporate papers?"
"I did," Grayson replied smoothly, sliding into the leather seat beside her. "The matter has been settled. The interference has been removed."
He reached out, taking her soft hand in his large, warm palm. Mailah looked down at his fingers, noticing a small spot of foam still resting on her lip.
"Your hand is cool," Mailah murmured softly, wrapping both of her hands around his. "Did you step outside?"
Grayson didn’t answer right away. He raised his free hand, his large thumb gently wiping the sweet coffee foam from her upper lip with delicate care.
"I stepped outside for a brief moment," Grayson admitted softly, his eyes softening with a deep, breathless warmth that made her pulse race. "To ensure the street was quiet for you. Everything is safe now."
Mailah blushed, her heart doing a familiar, fluttering beat as he licked the tiny drop of foam off his thumb with a subtle, arrogant smirk.
"You are so dramatic, Grayson," Mailah wheezed softly, hiding her red face behind her hands. "We are in public!"
"I am a devoted husband," Grayson declared haughtily, wrapping his long arm around her waist and pulling her close against his broad chest. "I do not care about the public."
Just then, the young barista walked back over to their table, carefully carrying a fresh plate of warm, cinnamon sugar pastries. He set the plate down with extreme caution, glancing nervously at Grayson.
"Here are your warm cinnamon twists, ma’am," the barista said quickly. "Made fresh two minutes ago. Zero leaves or flowers near the plate!"
"Thank you so much!" Mailah smiled warmly.
Grayson gave the barista a single, regal nod of approval. "You have performed adequately. You may go."
The barista bowed quickly and hurried away.
Mailah shook her head in total amusement, picking up a warm cinnamon twist and taking a bite. "Mmm! Grayson, try this. It’s so good!"
She held the pastry up to his mouth.
Grayson looked at the pastry, then at Mailah’s bright, happy eyes. He leaned down and took a small bite right where her fingers had touched it.
"Acceptable," Grayson pronounced gravely, though a small, satisfied smirk touched his lips. "Though my dark chocolate scones remain superior in every mathematical category."
"Of course they do, Mr. Probation," Mailah laughed softly, resting her head against his solid shoulder.
Grayson tightened his grip around her waist, holding her close while the rain pattered softly against the glass window.
Beneath his sweater, the dark Seal of the Bound Flame rested cool against his chest, pulsing with quiet, protective power. The world outside was filled with ancient threats and dark secrets, but inside the cozy cafe, holding his human wife in his arms, the ancient demon lord had everything he ever wanted.
By eight o’clock that evening, the estate was quiet and warm.
The rain had stopped, leaving a soft mist over the gardens outside. Inside the sunroom, the fireplace crackled with golden light, casting warm shadows across the velvet furniture.
Mailah was sitting on the soft rug, her long legs tucked beneath her pink blanket. She was wearing one of Grayson’s dark grey sweaters, the sleeves falling past her hands, making her look cozy and small.
Grayson stepped into the room carrying a silver tray. He had taken off his dark suit coat and put his trusty yellow duck apron back on over his turtleneck—a sight that Mailah found endlessly entertaining.
On the tray sat two bowls of steaming hot pumpkin soup, fresh garlic bread cut into exact forty-five-degree triangles, and two small porcelain cups of hot tea.
"Observe," Grayson announced with supreme, aristocratic pride, setting the tray down on the low wooden table. "Pumpkin soup. Prepared with roasted nutmeg and heavy cream. It possesses zero floral aura and optimal nutritional value for bone restoration."
Mailah burst out laughing, leaning back against her pillows. "Grayson! You don’t have to give a grand speech every time you bring me food!"
"A meal prepared for my queen requires a formal presentation," Grayson stated haughtily, taking his seat on the rug right beside her.
He picked up a silver spoon, carefully blew on the hot soup three times to ensure it was the perfect temperature, and held it out toward her mouth.
Mailah blinked, looking at the spoon, then at her husband’s sharp, expectant face.
"Grayson, I can feed myself," Mailah said, amused. "My ankle is hurt, not my arms!"
"Your arms require conservation of energy," Grayson argued flatly, refusing to lower the spoon by even a millimeter. "Open your mouth, Mailah. Do not delay the consumption of optimal nutrients."
Mailah shook her head fondly, leaning forward and taking the soup from the spoon. It was rich, creamy, and wonderfully warm.
"Mmm," Mailah admitted, smiling up at him. "Okay, that is really good."
A victorious smirk touched Grayson’s lips. He carefully fed her three more spoonfuls with utter, focused devotion, as if feeding his wife was the most critical royal task in the universe.
Mailah watched his sharp profile in the golden firelight. She looked at his broad shoulders, his long fingers holding the spoon, and the faint dark leather cord peeked out from the collar of his turtleneck.
Her heart melted into a warm, gooey puddle.
She reached out, gently placing her hand over his knee. "Grayson?"
Grayson paused, setting the spoon down and looking into her soft eyes. "Yes, my love?"
"Thank you," Mailah whispered softly. "For taking me out today. For the soup. For... everything you do."
Grayson stilled. He turned his full body to face her, his dark charcoal eyes softening with a raw, intense affection that made her breath catch completely in her throat.
"You do not need to thank me, Mailah," Grayson rumbled softly, his deep voice dropping into a velvety, breathtaking purr. "Serving you is not a duty. It is my purpose."
He reached out, his large, warm palm gently cupping her jawline. His thumb stroked her cheekbone, his touch so delicate and gentle it was impossible to believe he was an ancient creature of dark power.
"You’re stuck with me now, Mr. Probation," Mailah murmured softly, a sweet smile touching her lips. "Even when my leg heals, I’m still going to make you cut my bread into forty-five-degree triangles."
Grayson let out a low, deep laugh that vibrated against her chest. He leaned forward, pressing his forehead gently against hers.
"I would expect nothing less from my queen," Grayson whispered against her skin.
He leaned in, capturing her lips in a slow, deep, devastatingly romantic kiss.
