Beast Taming: My Beasts Grind, Die, and Respawn

Chapter 224: The Thousand-Token Door

  • Next Chapter

Jin’s first plan lasted about ninety seconds and failed for a reason he should have anticipated.

He put Glitch on the center and Flicker on the perimeter and let each of them handle the assigned boss, which was the obvious division and clearly the one the arena was built to suggest.

Glitch read the broodguard’s commitment through the connected ground, braced, met it, held it — and then it withdrew, went back under, and came up eleven meters away with its armor entirely intact.

It did that three times.

He can hold it. He can’t hurt it. Every time he braces, it resets.

Meanwhile Flicker could not kill the alpha. She could stay away from it, which was genuinely impressive, but she was a finisher and there was nothing to finish. The alpha never committed to anything long enough to be exposed, and every exchange cost her stamina she was not getting back.

And they were nineteen meters apart, so Bulwark had been inactive for the entire fight.

Jin stopped giving orders and watched for eleven seconds.

The alpha is herding Flicker off the center and taking Glitch’s flank whenever the broodguard forces him to brace. They’re one fight.

He rebuilt it in about fifteen seconds, and the new version used everything the run had given him.

"Flicker — come in. Eight meters. Stay inside it."

She came in, the Bulwark indicator lit, and the alpha followed her, because the alpha’s entire behavior was about controlling where she went.

Good. It’ll come to the center if she’s at the center.

"Glitch — don’t brace the next one. Read it and move off the line."

The broodguard committed, and Glitch stepped off instead of taking it, and the thing emerged into open ground with its momentum spent and nothing to push against.

The alpha arrived at exactly that moment, at speed, on a line that crossed the emergence point — because it had been chasing Flicker, and Flicker was standing eleven meters from where the broodguard came up.

"Glitch. The alpha. Displace it."

Glitch turned off the surfacing broodguard’s shoulder and put his whole evolved weight into the alpha’s flank as it crossed him.

It was not a killing blow. It was a shove, and the alpha went sideways and skidded and lost its footing entirely for the first time in the fight.

[Displaced]

[Follow-Through — window active]

Flicker was already moving.

She hit it while it was scrabbling, at the throat, inside the window, and the multiplier turned a strike that should have been a nuisance into something that opened the alpha along the whole length of its neck.

It got up. It did not get up well.

"Again. Same pattern."

The second one took forty seconds to set up, and the alpha died on it.

[Tithe — stamina return]

[Glitch — stamina 58% (+4)]

[Flicker — stamina 51% (+4)]

That left the broodguard, which had spent the entire fight learning nothing, because it was an animal.

It went under again.

"Glitch. It’s yours now. Read it."

He read it. Without an alpha taking his flank every time he braced, Glitch could commit properly to the ground, and when the broodguard came up at the center he was already standing where it had to arrive.

[Harden — active]

It hit him and did not move him.

"Acid Breath. Left hip, same as Stonewell."

The avatar’s throat produced it with no strain whatsoever, and Jin registered that and set it aside for a note later, because right now it was three seconds of corrosive spray into a seam that a real Glitch two feet away could not have produced at any price.

The seam pitted and sagged.

The broodguard tried to withdraw and Glitch would not let it, which was the whole difference — braced, off-balance, with nothing pulling him away, it could not get its weight back under itself to go down.

"Flicker — hip. Now."

She went in. The alpha was not there to intercept her, and Bulwark was live because she was six meters out, and she hit the corroded seam twice.

The broodguard came apart at the joint.

The last exchange cost more than Jin expected, because the thing was still enormous and still armored everywhere except one hip, and Glitch’s stamina was in the forties and Flicker’s was worse.

Glitch had fallen to forty-three percent and Flicker to thirty-six when Jin pressed Second Wind — one-time, both avatars — and it gave him exactly what it had said it would and not one point more.

[Glitch — stamina 68% (+25)]

[Flicker — stamina 61% (+25)]

Glitch finished it eleven seconds later with his body and the ruined joint.

[Wave 10 Checkpoint Cleared]

[First Checkpoint Boss Defeated]

[Tide Tokens acquired: 25]

[Event Shop unlocked]

[Checkpoint and achievement progression recorded]

Jin sat back against the wall of the processing bay and allowed himself about fifteen seconds of it.

First run: wrong rule, wrong build, Wave Eight. Second run: sustain, teamwork, Wave Ten clear.

He grinned at a phone screen in an empty room at half past four in the morning, which nobody saw and which was probably for the best.

Then he read the reward panel properly and stopped grinning.

[First-clear cache — awarded once]

[Subsequent Wave 10 clears: standard checkpoint rewards]

Once.

He checked the standard rewards. They were not nothing. They were also not twenty-five tokens.

The Event Shop had eleven listings and Jin read all of them.

Most were utilities — run modifiers, deployment options, one thing that appeared to let him reshape the boon pool. They ran between forty and three hundred tokens and all of them were currently unaffordable.

The one that mattered was at the top and it was priced exactly.

[Evolution Workshop Access — 1,000 Tide Tokens]

He opened the description.

[Permanent Engine facility. Evaluates compatible developmental materials and produces controlled development paths. Materials are assessed for compatibility, dosage, and staged application rather than applied blind.]

Jin read the phrase "controlled development paths" three times.

He had a Dual Fire-Wind Core in storage that he could not use, because using it meant handing an unassessed developmental resource to a hatchling whose entire medical plan came down to one instruction: do not stimulate anything. He had thirteen Cinderstorm Fragments and no purpose for them at all.

A facility that assessed compatibility and staged the application was the difference between a gamble and a plan.

And it costs a thousand.

He did not insert anything, spend anything, test anything, or open the Sync panel. He read the description twice more and closed it.

Then he did the arithmetic, because there was no point pretending he was not going to.

[Tide Tokens: 25]

[Required: 1,000]

Nine hundred and seventy-five.

The first-clear cache did not repeat, so forty clears of Wave Ten produced forty small standard rewards and nothing resembling the number he needed. The Wave Twenty marker sat on the map. The achievement list held nineteen entries: two revealed, seventeen hidden.

[Unused Tide Tokens persist after Event closure]

[Further Tide Tokens available during future recognized Astral Tides]

He checked the window.

[Estimated remaining: 58–70 hours]

The estimate had already lost nearly two hours to his first two runs and the time he had spent studying the Event. Glitch’s real body had twenty-four hours of mandatory rest, which did not stop the avatar from running but did mean Jin was not going anywhere. He would have to sleep at some point, which he resented in the abstract and knew perfectly well he could not skip for three days.

The run he had just finished had taken forty-one minutes to reach Wave Ten.

So a Wave Twenty run is what — two hours? Two and a half, if it doesn’t kill me at fourteen. And I don’t know what twenty pays or whether there’s a thirty behind it.

He looked at the achievement list again — nineteen entries, seventeen of them still hidden — and understood that repeating the early waves would never be enough. The meaningful token rewards waited behind deeper checkpoints and achievement conditions, and he had roughly sixty hours to find out what any of them were.

Two feet away, the real Glitch slept through all of it with a hydration line in his foreleg and twenty-four hours of enforced rest ahead of him. Two floors up, Flicker was green on four lines with a folded shirt beside her.

Jin opened a blank note and wrote WAVE 20 — WHAT DOES IT PAY across the top. Beneath it he listed the run time, the two revealed achievement conditions, the estimated hours left, and the six hours of sleep he could no longer pretend were optional.

He set the alarm, closed the Engine, and lay down beside Glitch’s treatment mat. The third run would still begin at Wave One when he woke, but this time Jin intended to be awake enough to learn from it.
