Ashes of the star forge

Chapter 181: No Clean Path

They moved along the broken wall in a tight group.

A Star 2 Argent Colossus noticed them almost immediately. It broke from the edge of the pack and came straight at them, silver bone plates low to the ground, six limbs driving it forward in a rapid, scraping charge. Elara met it first. She stepped in, cut hard across the joint of its lead arm, and twisted aside as the creature’s momentum carried it past. The blade left a deep groove in the silver armor but did not fully disable the limb.

The Colossus turned with surprising speed for its size and swung a heavy backhand. Lian reinforced his forearm and blocked. The impact still drove him two steps back into the wall. Stone cracked behind his shoulders. He answered with a short, upward thrust aimed at the thinner plating under the arm. The edge bit deep enough to draw dark fluid. The creature recoiled with a grinding snarl.

Ryzek finished it.

A compressed spear of amber energy punched through the gap Lian had created and out the far side of the Colossus’s neck. The body dropped hard, silver plates clattering against the floor. Almost immediately two pale vines dropped toward the fresh corpse. One of them shifted course mid-descent and lashed toward Ryzek instead. He cut it cleanly and kept moving.

There was no pause.

A cluster of six-legged hunters, driven into a frenzy by the bottleneck at the entrance, spilled toward their section of wall. Elara killed the first with a precise thrust through the eye. The second leapt. She caught it on the blade and used its own weight to throw it into a third. Lian dealt with a fourth that tried to come in low, driving his weapon down through the spine behind the head. Blood spread quickly across the stone.

Above them, golden vines continued to drop in irregular patterns. One nearly took Elara’s head as she turned. She dropped into a crouch and felt the heavy tip smash into the wall where she had been standing. Rock dust rained down. Ryzek answered with two rapid energy bursts that forced the vine to retract, but three more were already descending in its place.

The Star 4 Colossus from the earlier group turned its bloodshot eyes toward the noise of their fight.

It came at them in a direct line, heavier and more deliberate than the Star 2. Smaller creatures scrambled to get out of its path. The living gate tried to intercept it with a dense curtain of pale vines. The Colossus tore through most of them with raw power, silver plates protecting it from the worst of the constriction, and kept coming.

Lian, Elara, and Ryzek were forced to give ground along the wall.

Elara engaged first, using speed to stay outside the main arcs of its heavy arms. Her blade scored the silver armor in three places but found no deep gap. The Colossus swung low. She jumped the sweep, landed, and had to immediately cut a pale vine that tried to coil around her leg from the side.

Lian moved in from the opposite angle and struck at the knee joint. The impact jarred his arms. The armor held. The Colossus shifted its weight and drove a shoulder into him, slamming him back into the wall hard enough to knock the breath from his lungs. Dark spots flickered at the edges of his vision for a moment before he forced himself to roll clear of a follow-up strike.

Ryzek hit the creature with a focused barrage of amber energy, targeting the same points Elara had already marked. Micro-fractures spread across one of the chest plates. The Colossus roared and turned its full attention toward him, giving Lian and Elara a brief window to recover position.

The fight stayed ugly and close.

Every exchange drew more attention. Additional six-legged hunters tried to join the attack. More vines dropped. The larger chaos of the chamber — the magma beast still locked with the Star 5, the bottleneck still jammed with bodies — continued without any sign of thinning. There was no open space, no clean angle, and no moment where only one threat needed to be handled at a time.

Elara took a deep claw rake across her outer thigh from a hunter that slipped past her guard. She killed it on the return stroke and kept moving. Lian’s earlier injuries from the pack chase burned with every hard impact. Ryzek’s crystalline ridges were chipped in two places, and dark blood ran along the outer edge of one arm.

They killed the Star 4 together.

Elara drew its focus with a series of rapid cuts. Lian drove his weapon into the fractured chest plate with everything he had left in that moment. Ryzek drove an energy spear through the opening the instant it widened. The heavy body collapsed, crushing two smaller hunters underneath it as it fell.

Before they could take more than three steps, another set of silver eyes locked onto them from the shifting mass near the entrance.
