Chapter 180: The Pack Arrives
The first Argent Colossus did not come alone for long.
Three more silver-armored shapes forced their way through the entrance in rapid succession, bone plates scraping against the sides of the fissure as they pushed into the chamber. A Star 2, lean and quick, scrambled along the wall to avoid the immediate press of bodies. Behind it came a heavier Star 4, its broader frame shouldering aside a cluster of panicked six-legged hunters with raw strength. The bloodshot silver eyes of the pack swept the chamber, locking onto movement wherever it appeared.
Lian stayed low beside Elara and Ryzek, still catching his breath from the crash landing. The three of them kept close to a section of broken wall that offered partial cover from both the vines and the open floor. Around them the chaos had no clear pattern. Creatures that had been fighting the living gate moments earlier were now trying to escape the new arrivals. The living gate itself continued dropping vines without pause, treating every moving body as a target.
A golden vine lashed across the space near them. Ryzek cut it with a short, precise burst of amber energy before it could coil around anyone. Elara kept her blade ready, eyes tracking both the Colossi and the shifting mass of other predators. Lian’s gaze stayed on the entrance.
More of the pack were still coming.
The Star 5 entered last among the first wave, its presence heavier than the others. The silver bone armor covering its body was thicker, the plates marked with old scars. It moved with deliberate control, scanning the chamber once before releasing a short, resonant call. The rest of the pack adjusted immediately, spreading wider, cutting off easy paths along the walls and floor.
The magma-plated beast decided the new arrivals were a greater problem than the tree. It charged the Star 5 with a ground-shaking roar, crimson veins flaring bright. The two large bodies collided near the center of the chamber. Stone cracked under the impact. Pale and golden vines took advantage of the distraction, dropping onto both of them in heavy clusters, but neither apex predator paid the tree much attention in that first exchange.
Smaller creatures tried to use the violence as cover to reach the corridor.
Most failed.
The entrance had become a bottleneck of competing bodies. Six-legged hunters, wounded scavengers, and at least two Phase Stalker distortions all tried to push outward at the same time the remaining Colossi were still forcing their way in. The result was a brutal, tangled crush of claws, bone plates, and panicked movement. Bodies fell and were trampled. The living gate’s vines reached into the edges of the bottleneck and pulled whatever they could catch back into the chamber.
Lian, Elara, and Ryzek stayed where they were for the moment, using the broken wall and the shifting chaos to remain less noticeable. Moving too early would put them directly into the path of either the pack or the densest groups of vines. Moving too late might leave them with no path at all.
Another heavy tremor ran through the floor.
Whatever had been following the Colossi pack was still approaching. The pressure of it pressed against every sense in the chamber, stronger than the Star 5, stronger than the magma beast. Dust continued to fall from above. A larger section of stone broke free from the upper wall and smashed into the floor near the trunk, crushing two hunters that had been trying to climb.
The Star 5 Colossus tore free from its clash with the magma beast long enough to look toward the entrance again. Its bloodshot silver eyes narrowed. The rest of the pack shifted uneasily, some turning their attention outward even while still engaged with the immediate threats around them.
The corridor darkened further as the greater presence drew closer.
Lian pushed himself fully upright, one hand braced against the wall.
“We can’t stay here,” he said under his breath.
Elara nodded once. Ryzek’s four amber eyes flicked toward the densest section of vines, then toward a narrow stretch of wall that still offered a partial route around the main fighting.
