Chapter 182: Hidden in Blood
They did not try to fight the next set of silver eyes.
As soon as the new Argent Colossus turned toward them, Lian, Elara, and Ryzek dropped low and pushed into the thickest part of the chaos. Bodies slammed together around them. A six-legged hunter crashed into a wounded scavenger. Pale vines dropped in irregular curtains, coiling around anything that moved too slowly. The three of them kept close to the floor and used the larger carcasses as cover, crawling and sprinting in short bursts whenever a small gap opened.
A golden vine smashed into the stone less than a meter from Elara’s head. Rock chips cut across her cheek. She did not stop. Ryzek pulled Lian sideways as a Star 2 Colossus barreled past, silver plates scraping sparks from the floor. The heavier creature did not notice them in the press of movement and blood.
They reached a section where three large corpses had fallen together — two hunters and a partially crushed Phase Stalker. The bodies created a low, uneven pocket against the wall. The three of them pressed into the space and went still.
Around them the chamber continued to tear itself apart.
The Star 5 Colossus and the magma-plated beast had locked together again near the center. Bone plates and molten-looking armor slammed into each other with enough force to send cracks racing across the floor. Golden vines wrapped both of them in thick clusters. The living gate was finally committing its stronger defenses in volume. Dark fluid and glowing crimson blood mixed across the stone as the two apex predators ripped at each other and at the vines at the same time.
The rest of the Argent Colossi pack spread through the chamber with brutal efficiency. They did not panic the way the smaller creatures had. They fought. A Star 4 tore a heavy golden vine in half with its bare hands and used the severed length to club a group of six-legged hunters out of its path. Another Colossus climbed partway up the bone-colored trunk itself, silver claws gouging deep lines into the wood as it tried to reach the higher branches.
The tree reacted with real violence.
Vines that had been spread across the entire chamber began pulling back toward the main threats. Pale and golden tendrils layered over the Colossi and the magma beast in dense, constricting masses. The trunk shuddered. A deep, resonant sound rolled out of the living gate — not a roar, but something older and angrier.
One of the larger Colossi, a heavily built Star 4, managed to drive both armored hands deep into a thick section of the trunk. Silver bone plates flexed. It pulled. A long, jagged split opened in the pale wood, spraying dark sap in a wide arc. The tree’s response was immediate and savage. Three golden vines slammed the Colossus from different directions at once, wrapping its limbs and neck. The creature refused to release its hold. Even as the vines crushed inward, it kept tearing.
A second Colossus joined it.
Then a third.
The living gate was being hurt.
Deep grooves and open splits now marked the lower trunk where the silver-armored pack had focused their strength. Sap ran freely down the bone-colored wood and pooled on the floor. Some of the upper vines moved with less coordination than before. The tree was still dangerous, still killing anything it could reach, but the concentrated assault from the Colossi was forcing it to defend itself instead of simply harvesting everything in the chamber.
From their low cover behind the corpses, Lian, Elara, and Ryzek watched without moving.
A six-legged hunter tried to crawl into their pocket of space. Elara killed it with a short, silent thrust under the jaw and slowly pulled the body in front of them as additional cover. Blood seeped across the stone toward their boots. None of them spoke.
Another heavy impact shook the chamber as the Star 5 Colossus ripped a full cluster of golden vines off its shoulders and smashed them into the trunk. More sap sprayed. A section of the lower bark and wood tore free completely and crashed to the floor, crushing two smaller creatures underneath it.
The living gate’s pulse, once steady and confident, now felt ragged.
The pack Lian had led here was doing exactly what they needed.
