Chapter 46: When the Game Stops Being a Game

Curiosity got the better of her. Alexis clicked in.

The stream loaded, and there he was Kael, planted at the edge of the battlement with a longbow in hand, loosing arrow after arrow into the horde below like the outcome had never once been in question.

Behind him, sixteen Bonecaster Mages stood in perfect ranks, grey robes snapping in the wind, staves rising and falling in a rhythm too clean to be sixteen separate minds.

Below the wall, a colossal violet shape thundered through the horde on horseback, cutting through Hollowfang Hounds the way a blade cuts through wheat.

Overhead, something with a two-meter wingspan wreathed itself in crackling blue light and dropped bolt after bolt of lightning into the mass below.

The comment feed didn’t slow down long enough to be read in real time.

"Okay, what is the pedigree on these three companion? All of them hit like end-game bosses."

"That eagle’s only level ten and it’s already tearing chunks off a level-sixteen horde. What kind of stat scaling is that?"

"Has to be Platinum-tier. Nothing lower puts out numbers like that."

"Somebody ran a detection skill on all three. The violet one’s actually Silver-tier. The other two are full Legendary."

"Wait Silver did that? I’ve seen Legendary pets that hit softer."

"Probably his hidden class. Extra scaling across the board would explain all three."

"Forget the pets, look at the drops. Gold and gear are just piling up under him like the game glitched."

"Now I get why a dozen of Ironclad’s top players got wiped trying to jump him last month."

"It was never that Ironclad was weak. It’s that nobody’s actually on his level."

"Speaking of anyone seen an Ironclad tag online today? Not one."

"They didn’t even show up for the biggest event of the year. Something’s wrong there."

"You haven’t heard? Whole leadership got hauled in this morning. That’s why nobody’s logged in."

"Wait, seriously? What happened?"

"Nobody knows for sure. Rumors everywhere. But something definitely happened."

"Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch."

Alexis watched all three companions cut loose at once, and something in her chest quietly gave out.

That’s not an output number. That’s a different category of game entirely.

She’d made a bet. Out loud. On the record. Confident enough to stake her own event rewards on outscoring him.

Watching it now, the memory landed less like pride and more like a countdown to public humiliation.

I turned myself into the punchline of my own joke. Her face burned hot enough that she was grateful, for once, nobody on this side of the screen could see it.

It felt exactly like walking into a fight sure she held the advantage, only to end up flat on her back with her own confidence used against her and everyone watching.

Along the rest of the battlement, the mood had curdled into something closer to resignation.

Archers and mages who’d spent the morning convinced their class advantage would carry them straight up the leaderboard now stood staring at the same floating rankings panel, watching one name climb it like it was on rails.

Nobody was gaining ground. Nobody was even losing ground gracefully.

"Rest of us are out here harvesting points with a hand sickle," someone finally said, flat, defeated. "That guy brought an actual combine."

"No contest. None."

"New goal, everybody. Fight for second."

Somewhere off in a quiet leveling zone, far from any of the fighting, Ashley Monroe watched the same stream with her breath coming faster than she’d admit to anyone.

One event. Tens of millions of eyes, all at once.Told you, she thought, smug even alone. Unrivaled was always going to be the thing that made this game’s numbers explode. I called it before anyone.

He’s smarter than the version of him I used to have wrapped around my finger but every man’s got a weakness somewhere. And a Beastlord’s weakness is control.

A creature that comes to him on its own, offers itself up willingly, asks for nothing but his attention

No man walks away from that. Not even him.

Something settled behind her eyes, cold and decided.

Whatever it takes to attach myself to that wave before it crests. Whatever it takes.

Wave four broke over the plain in the same way the first three had a fresh boiling surge pouring out of the still-open wound in the sky, the light above it never quite healing shut between waves.

Alexis, still grinding through the last of the horde beneath her section of wall, watched gold light wash over her and felt her level tick over.

Twenty.

She didn’t get so much as a full second to enjoy it. A new prompt was already unrolling across her panel, and whatever relief she’d felt evaporated on contact.

In-game currency, converted directly into real-world value?Better to assume it’s true than gamble on it being a rumor.

Her pulse spiked. She snapped open a private channel without a second thought.

"Buy up every gold coin you can find, whatever the price. Now. Don’t wait, don’t negotiate just move."

"On it," came the answer, no hesitation, though whoever was on the other end clearly had no idea what had just lit a fire under her.

She wasn’t the only one moving. Across a dozen other guild channels, the same instinct was firing at once leadership barking the same order to whoever would listen, coin markets seizing up within minutes as demand outran supply and prices climbed hard enough to leave half the server staring at their wallets in confusion.

Then the whole sky answered for both of them.A system bell tolled across every server in the world at once, deep enough to feel in the chest, and gold text unrolled across the heavens in letters too large to miss.

"World Announcement: Ten players worldwide have completed their second class advancement, officially unlocking the game’s real-world interaction system."

"Effective immediately: entry to Ascension is restricted to those aged twenty-five and under.

Existing players outside that threshold will have their remaining time automatically extended by two and a half years."

"Players may now spend in-game gold to purchase additional lifespan, and may extract in-game items into the real world.

Full details are available in the game’s updated instructions."

"Play responsibly. Your life is not a resource to be spent carelessly."
