Chapter 39: An Audience With the King

The man who stepped through the door carried himself like someone who’d spent decades being the smartest person in every room he entered and had long since stopped needing to prove it.

Kael recognized him instantly. Archmagister Corwin Vale, court mage of Frostwatch, tutor to a princess most of the server didn’t know was missing.

Business came first. Vale examined the elemental core, nodded once in satisfaction, and counted out two thousand gold without a wasted motion.

Only then did his attention drift past Kael, to the cloaked figure standing a half-step behind him something flickering across his expression, recognition trying and failing to fully surface.

He turned back to Kael, gaze sharpening into something far more calculating.

"You insisted on handling this delivery personally. I don’t imagine two thousand gold was the actual reason."

"Sharp as ever, Archmagister." Kael inclined his head slightly toward the cloaked figure.

"See for yourself who’s with me."

Elara stepped forward and lowered her hood.

Vale’s composure cracked clean down the middle.

Whatever careful neutrality he’d walked in with evaporated, replaced by open, trembling shock.

"Elara. You’re how are you even" He caught himself, voice unsteady. "What in the world happened to you?"

"It’s a long story, Teacher." Something in her voice wavered with genuine emotion, seeing a familiar face for the first time in months.

Once she’d steadied herself, she told it the ambush, the tomb, the ritual, the months of captivity that had nearly ended in something far worse than death.

"If not for my lord here," she finished, glancing toward Kael, "I’d still be down there. He cleared the Lich and its circle alone and cut me loose."

"But there’s something worse. While I was gone, someone’s been wearing my face moving through the palace, attending court, doing whatever the Scourge Legion actually sent them there to do."

Her voice hardened. "That’s why I came to you first. I need to reach my father, and I need you to vouch for me before whatever they’re planning finishes playing out."

Vale’s expression sobered fast, the weight of what she’d just described settling visibly onto his shoulders.

If even half of it was true, Frostwatch had an enemy agent sitting inside its own walls, and every day that went unaddressed was a day closer to whatever that agent had actually been sent to do.

But he’d learned patience the hard way, over a long career of court politics. An unverified claim, however convincing, wasn’t proof and the stakes here were far too high for anything less than certainty.

He circled her slowly, studying every detail, searching for the seam in whatever disguise this might be. He found nothing wrong on the surface. Nothing at all.

Still, he pressed. "Appearance can be forged. Bearing can be trained. I need something no impostor could possibly know."

Something thoughtful crossed Elara’s face, then a flicker of amusement.

"You keep a second book hidden in your left sleeve, Teacher. Spellwork, for show, whenever someone’s watching. But the real one the one with the yellow binding that’s in your right sleeve. For when no one’s around."

Vale went red and cut her off with a sharp, pointed cough. "That’s— yes. Enough. I believe you."

No impostor briefed by the Legion could have known that detail. Whatever doubt remained in him vanished on the spot.

"This can’t wait." His voice snapped into something urgent, all hesitation gone. "We go to the palace. Now. The King needs to hear this directly."

The three of them made their way toward the heart of Frostwatch, Vale leading with the kind of authority that opened doors without a word needing to be spoken.

Frostwatch sat as capital of the Kingdom of Winterhold, one of seven kingdoms bound together under the Dawn Alliance. ℯ

Centuries back, before the Hollow Rift first tore open somewhere in the deep north, this city had gone by a different name entirely a quiet frontier town, nothing more.

Everything changed the day the Scourge Legion first spilled out of that wound in the world, and Winterhold found itself standing directly in the path of the invasion, first line of defense for an entire continent.

The city took a new name to match its new purpose. Frostwatch. And its ruler carried the same weight in his title King of Winterhold, though most simply called him the King of Frostwatch in casual conversation.

Even with the palace’s guard heavy and thorough, Vale’s presence cleared every checkpoint without friction.

Within minutes, all three of them stood in a grand side hall, face to face with the King himself.

He looked every bit of his fifty-some years silver threading through dark hair at the temples, deep-set eyes carrying the particular stillness of someone who’d made peace with carrying enormous weight for a very long time.

Command radiated off him without effort, the kind that came from decades of practice rather than performance.

The moment Elara lowered her hood, his composure broke exactly the way Vale’s had.

She told the story again, start to finish the ambush, the tomb, the ritual, the rescue.

The King’s face shifted through disbelief, grief, fury, and something achingly tender all at once, the mask of rulership slipping for just long enough to show the father underneath it.

But like Vale before him, he couldn’t simply accept it. He’d spent three months in the company of whoever whatever had been standing in his daughter’s place, and never once caught the seam.

"This is too significant a claim to accept on your word alone." His voice came out low, controlled, though something raw trembled just beneath it.

"Give me something no one but my true daughter could possibly know."

Elara had already prepared for this exact moment, having watched Vale demand the same thing less than an hour earlier.

Her eyes flicked toward the two guards flanking the throne, hesitation crossing her face. "Father this is something only you should hear."

Suspicion sharpened in the King’s expression. "These men have served me for twenty years. Whatever you have to say, you may say freely."

"Very well." Elara straightened, voice clear and steady. "When I was five, I followed you into the garden and saw you and the Duchess behind the ornamental stones near the fountain"

"Enough!" The King’s voice cracked out fast, cutting her off mid-sentence, color rushing to his face.

He was already moving before the word finished leaving his mouth, crossing the hall in a few long strides to pull her into a fierce embrace, checking her over with the desperate thoroughness of a father who’d nearly lost everything.

Then his expression shifted, the warmth burning away into something cold and absolute.

"Guards." His voice dropped to a register that promised violence. "Find the creature wearing my daughter’s face.

Bring it before me. NOW."

One of the guards straightened, hesitation flickering across his features before he answered.

"Your Majesty the Third Princess departed for Silvermoon Fortress at dawn this morning."
