Ascension Online: My Beasts Evolve infinitely
Chapter 36: Wraithlord
Light poured into the General’s frame and didn’t let go.
Bone cracked and reformed beneath the glow, the General’s already imposing height stretching taller still, shoulders squaring into something built for war rather than mere duty.
The tattered, rust-eaten armor plating twisted and reshaped itself piece by piece, shedding centuries of decay in seconds, until what remained was a set of black, jagged plate that looked forged rather than found the kind of armor that belonged in an old story, on a figure nobody wanted to meet on a battlefield.
A rift tore open in the air beside him, and something stepped through it a horse of bleached white bone, hooves wreathed in dancing, undead flame, each step leaving scorch marks that flickered and died against the snow.
Its eye sockets burned the same pale fire, and when it exhaled, the breath came out as smoke rather than mist.
The General mounted in a single fluid motion, a spear of deep crimson materializing in one gauntleted hand, light bleeding off its edge like something half-alive.
Sitting there, armored and ablaze, he looked less like a risen soldier and more like something that had clawed its way up out of the underworld specifically to collect a debt someone had forgotten they owed.
"Bloodline Evolution Stone consumed. [Skeleton General] (Silver) has evolved into [Wraithlord] (Legendary). New skills unlocked: [Phantom Charge] (S), [Spectral Slash] (A), [Cinder Charge] (A)."
[WRAITHLORD]
Bloodline Tier: Legendary
Constitution ★★★★★★★★★
Strength ★★★★★★★★★★★★
Agility ★★★★★★★★★★
Spirit ★★★★★★★★★★★
Skills: Phantom Charge (S), Spectral Slash (A), Cinder Charge (A), Legion of the Damned (B), Undying Fury (B), Bonebreaker Combo (B), Wraith Thrust (B)
Forty-two stars total two shy of Elara’s own number, but still leagues past what any ordinary Legendary-tier companion had any right to carry.
Enough to stand comfortably alongside a few Epic-tier pets with genuinely poor rolls.
The new skills sealed the deal. Phantom Charge summoned a full column of spectral riders to tear through a target area, brutal against anything unlucky enough to be grouped up.
Spectral Slash hit like a hammer on a single target, no frills, just raw single-target output.
Cinder Charge covered fifty yards in a blink, stunning whatever it connected with and leaving a trail of fire that kept burning long after the initial hit landed mobility, control, and damage stitched into one package.
Kael studied the readout with open satisfaction, then turned his attention to the second reward still waiting in his inventory.
The Ancient Sealed Egg sat in his palm like something alive smooth, pale as fresh-cut jade, veined with faint patterns that pulsed slower than a heartbeat but just as steadily.
[ANCIENT SEALED EGG]
Grade: Legendary
A mysterious relic containing an ancient bloodline, humming with dormant life. Bond with it, and it will hatch into a rare Legendary-tier companion.
Ascension had a habit of rewarding first-clears generously, and if history repeated itself, whatever hatched from this thing would be worth the wait.
But he wasn’t cracking it open just yet.
Reaching level 20 had unlocked something that mattered a great deal more than one more companion Reality Extraction.
The bridge between in-game power and consequences in the real world had just opened, and Kael had exactly one name he intended to test it on tonight.
That kind of business needed to leave nothing behind. No trail, no witnesses, nothing that could ever be traced back to a masked player standing in a snowfield.
His fourth companion slot wasn’t going to the egg. Not yet. It was going to something built specifically for work like this a monster fluent in the art of disappearing before anyone noticed it had arrived.
He already knew exactly which one.
First, though, there was loot to sort. The Python’s corpse had given up eight pieces of Gold-tier gear and a pair of B-rank skill books a genuinely absurd haul, even by tonight’s standards. Two pieces actually fit him.
Frostscale Eye (Gold) +39 CON, +41 STR, +37 AGI, +35 SPR, +5% physical lifesteal, Lv. 25
Snowveil Cloak (Gold) +38 CON, +35 STR, +44 AGI, +37 SPR, +7% movement speed, Lv. 25
He equipped both on the spot, feeling the fresh weight of the stats settle in, and dug the rest of the way through the corpse until his fingers closed around the actual objective a pulsing shard of frost-blue crystal. The Python’s elemental core.
He tucked it into the ring’s storage, cracked a return scroll, and let the pull of the teleport drag him back toward Frostwatch.
He didn’t head straight for the Guild counter, though. Delivering the core to Archmagister Vale could wait a little longer. There was money to move first.
He opened his contacts, pulled up the day’s entire haul every scrap of gear, every skill book, everything the Ridge had handed him and fired the whole list across to Alexis Kane.
"All of this. A hundred thousand gold. You in?"Her reply came back inside a minute, practically vibrating with enthusiasm through the text alone.
Most of what Kael had farmed sat between levels 25 and 30 exactly the bracket every serious guild on the server was desperate to gear into right now.
More than a dozen pieces of it graded out Gold-tier. A haul like that could gear out Evertide’s entire active roster in one transaction, and Alexis clearly knew it the second she opened the list.
"Yes. God, yes. Send it over."
"Full payment in gold. No partial trades."
"Give me an hour I’ll have people buying up coin the second we hang up."
"Deal."
Kael closed the chat and didn’t linger. With payment already in motion, he had no intention of wasting the wait doing nothing.
He struck out west through Frostwatch’s gates, boots crunching over frost-hardened ground, chasing a target he’d already picked out days no, a lifetime ago.
Half an hour of hard travel brought him deep into a valley that seemed to swallow sound itself, wind curling low and constant between jagged rock walls that blotted out most of the sky, the last daylight long since bled out of the clouds overhead.
There, waiting exactly where memory said it would be, stood something built entirely out of shadow given shape twin daggers, a form that flickered at the edges like it couldn’t quite decide whether to be solid, and an aura cold enough to make the surrounding air feel wrong.
Kael raised two fingers, triggered the Bond, and watched gold light spiral down around the creature’s shifting form.
It dropped to one knee the moment the rune closed, head bowed, utterly still.
"Bond established. Gold-Tier companion acquired: Voidblade Assassin."
Kael studied the kneeling shape for a long moment, satisfaction settling somewhere behind the mask.
Whatever tonight demanded of him, this fourth companion would make sure none of it left a trace worth finding.
