Chapter 29: The Grave Lich
The chanting cut off the instant Kael’s boots crossed into the chamber.
All five hooded figures turned as one, faces lost somewhere in the dark beneath their cowls featureless, wrong, the kind of empty that made his skin crawl even after everything he’d already survived.
The information hovering above their heads told him everything their faces wouldn’t.
[GRAVE LICH] Level 22, Silver-Tier Boss.
Four [LICH ACOLYTE]s flanking it, level 21 apiece.
"Trespasser." The Lich’s voice ground out like stone dragged over stone. "You’ll regret this."
It threw its hand up, and a fireball tore loose from its palm, screaming across the chamber.
Kael read the wind-up before the spell even finished forming. Two quick steps, angled sideways, and the fireball detonated harmlessly against stone behind him.
He was already moving, sword arcing back into a ready grip, closing the distance at a dead sprint.
The General surged in step behind him, roaring, six risen skeletons fanning out at its flanks.
Farther back, the Frostwraith drew and loosed, ice-wreathed arrows shrieking through the dark toward the cluster of robed figures.
She was underleveled for this fight, technically a level 16 Silver-tier boss thrown against opponents five and six levels above her.
But cloth-armor casters had never needed much punching through, and the class passive closed most of the remaining gap on its own. Every arrow that connected still landed hard.
The return fire hurt considerably more.
The Lich planted its staff and chanted, and out of nothing, a spectral claw condensed in the space above Kael’s head skeletal, translucent, radiating a cold that had nothing to do with temperature.
It closed around him and squeezed.
Five hundred health, gone in a heartbeat.
He barely felt it.
Fused into Hollow Plate, Kael was running eighty percent of the Behemoth’s own stat sheet HP included.
His pool sat comfortably north of twenty thousand. A hit like that barely dented the number, let alone threatened it.
He closed the last few meters at full speed, picked the nearest Acolyte, and cut.
-247
The blade opened a clean line across its chest. Level gap or not, cloth defense folded to a well-placed strike the same way it always did.
He didn’t stop moving. Two steps back, putting just enough distance between himself and the cluster to line up his next play, and triggered Harrowing Roar.
Hollow Plate lit up violet from within, and a spectral outline of the Behemoth itself tore loose from the armor’s surface jaw unhinging, unleashing a visible wave of sound that rolled outward in a wide fan, catching all five enemies at once.
The General followed a half-second later, spear driving forward in a blur Combo Strike, three clean punctures opening across the same Acolyte Kael had already wounded.
On paper, five coordinated Silver-tier casters against one player and two companions should have been a losing fight.
But monsters didn’t think they reacted, purely on instinct, no coordination beyond raw aggression. And every ounce of that aggression kept locking onto the loudest, hardest-hitting target in the room.
Which was exactly where Kael wanted it.
His melee instincts hadn’t dulled a single degree in this new body two and a half years of blood-soaked survival in a life most of this server would never know about had carved that skillset somewhere past muscle memory, into something closer to reflex.
He moved through the cluster like water finding gaps, using their own bodies as cover, breaking line of sight mid-cast, forcing interrupted spells that should have landed clean.
A third of the incoming damage never touched him at all, dodged clean through footwork alone. What did land, his stat pool simply absorbed and shrugged off.
He called the focus fire himself General and Frostwraith both, hammering the same target he’d already opened, burying one Acolyte after another under combined pressure before it had a real chance to fight back.
First one dropped in under three minutes. He repeated the exact same pattern on the second, the third, the fourth grinding through the support casters one at a time until only the Lich itself remained, alone in the center of its own ritual circle, screaming something that might have been fury or might have been fear.
Alone, it hit harder than ever spell after spell tearing into Kael in a desperate final push, chunks of health disappearing in ugly bursts.
He drank through potions to keep pace, let Bloodthirsty Feast’s leech effect and the General’s shared damage absorb the rest, and held the line through a fight that would’ve flattened almost anyone else on the server outright.
His health bottomed out at fifteen percent before the opening finally came.
Bloodthirsty Feast triggered on cooldown, and a monstrous, spectral maw tore into existence in front of him the Hollow Plate’s own borrowed jaws, closing around what was left of the Lich’s health bar in a single, decisive bite.
The robed figure folded and hit the stone floor in a heap, gear and coin scattering wide across the ritual circle in a bright, satisfying cascade.
Kael took his time sorting through it. Two Gold-tier pieces. Thirteen Silver. A pair of caster-class skill books.
A genuinely stupid amount of loot for one dungeon room.
One Gold piece actually suited him.

He tucked it away for later a level or two out of reach, but worth the wait. Everything else would go straight to the auction house the moment he made it back to Frostwatch.
With the loot squared away, he turned toward the center of the chamber, toward the wooden frame still standing amid the ritual circle’s scorched runes.
A young woman hung there, wrists bound, head down, dark hair falling loose across her face. Her clothes had been reduced to little more than rags, and beneath them, bruises and old wounds marked her skin the kind of damage that spoke of days, not hours.
Kael’s jaw tightened.
Whatever the ritual had been building toward, it hadn’t been anything good.
