Armed Train in the Apocalypse
Chapter 888 501: Embers of the Long Night (Part 10)
The night not only brings fear but also shelters unease.
Su Huan had no intention of illuminating the entire battlefield. A few light points danced like fireflies before everyone's eyes, filling them with a warm glow.
Qin Mian led the way ahead, the group traversing a battlefield strewn with flesh and blood, crossing trenches that were filled, their expressions growing increasingly somber.
Qin Mian trod on soil soaked with blood beneath his feet, forcing himself to stay calm, "Don't worry, we will definitely find it. Our platoon's communication operator is here; that new radio set never left his hand, wouldn't even let us touch it. He cherished it so much, even if he's gone, the equipment must still be intact."
Su Huan watched in silence as Qin Mian crawled through trenches, flipping over one corpse after another. He could see the young man purposely avoiding looking at the faces of the corpses.
He was afraid of seeing too clearly.
Su Huan silently pulled the light away.
Until Qin Mian called him over, "I said it wasn't broken, as long as we have this, we can reach our unit."
Qin Mian lifted a military-green cube the size of a main unit from the pit, its size impressive, with visible welding marks revealing that the military's communication technology had been updated.
He placed the communication equipment on a relatively clean patch of land, and several people gathered around.
Qin Mian asked, "Does anyone know how to use this?"
A Senior Private rubbed his hands together, "I'll try. I heard some old-timers talk about it before."
After a series of operations, everyone held their breath and listened to the static noise of the radio.
Three minutes passed, the static noise persisted; after five minutes, the sound seemed to grow louder.
Fifteen minutes later, feeling the suspicious gaze of his comrades, the Senior Private grimaced, "Almost there, I feel it's about to work."
Su Huan concentrated for a while, then extended a finger to touch the metal shell outside the radio. Suddenly, a clear voice emerged from what had been silent radio, but it flickered quickly back to silence.
Everyone looked at the communication device in amazement, the Senior Private even anxiously slapped its surface.
Su Huan was aware of the problem now.
Based on the energy cycle within the train's communication set, he tried to sort it out, and sure enough, the radio stabilized.
Upon hearing the voice inside, Qin Mian and others immediately reported their numbers and location.
While everyone felt unease, a barrage of questions came from inside, "This is the 712nd Composite Division Command Center, I am Commander He Wei, how many of your platoon members are still there?"
Finally, a big fish has arrived.
Su Huan's eyes gleamed as he spoke, "Their platoon leader died in battle, currently there are only a dozen left."
"They? Who are you?" The voice on the other side hesitated, "Never mind, I don't care who you are, now you are the platoon leader. Due north is your composite brigade's main force, hurry and meet up with them, time is urgent, depart now, bring all survivors with you!"
Su Huan paused, about to explain, but the other side had already disconnected, leaving the dozen people looking at each other.
Then, everyone simultaneously raised their heads towards Su Huan.
"I told you we won, just didn't have time to clean the battlefield..."
Qin Mian's slightly trembling voice lifted everyone's spirits.
Upon hearing their brigade's main force was still intact, the pressure on everyone's hearts eased a little.
Yet the recent order left them hesitant. Although Su Huan was strong, he wasn't a soldier, and he was a rare outsider, far more valuable than those big-headed soldiers, throwing him directly into battle was too dangerous.
Moreover, listening to the commander's tone, the battle ahead seemed tense, if something goes wrong, it would be irreparable.
"Bring the equipment, let's head out."
Su Huan sighed inwardly, leading the group back on the road, heading north.
Reaching this point, could he really turn back?
As soon as they found their brigade's commander, they would explain everything face to face.
With a specific direction, Su Huan sensed a few times and found the position of the composite brigade, not far, about 20 kilometers away.
That distance was nothing to Su Huan, but he was somewhat concerned about the soldiers behind him. After all, they had fought all day and walked for five or six hours in succession, their physical strength probably close to the limit.
Yet he underestimated the will of the soldiers, everyone kept pace, even at his brisk speed, none fell behind.
After an hour, the group already heard the sound of gunfire and cannons in the distance.
Walking another half hour, they finally reached the edge of the battlefield.
Explosions, fire, and shouts rang out intermittently.
The battlefield was a chaotic mess, a few Black Armored Cavalry charging through the center, while warriors hid in trenches, occasionally popping up for concentrated fire.
No one noticed them at all.
"So we are..."
Seeing this scene, Qin Mian and others were dumbfounded.
Su Huan's eyelids twitched; due to military's special situation, he could not rely on evolvers to ascertain the position of the unit commander. Amidst such chaos, finding anyone was a dream, either wait or help them finish the fight.
But waiting was not an option.
The train conductor sighed lightly, "Wait here for me a while, remember not to go anywhere."
He then headed straight towards the battlefield's center.
Qin Mian and others were alarmed, although they knew Su Huan was formidable, the impression left by the Black Armored Cavalry's iron-blooded onslaught was even deeper, compared to the unknown power, the understandable violence induced more fear in them.
