Armed Train in the Apocalypse
Chapter 833 - 474: Lament
"In front of my house, there was a chicken farm with several big dogs. When I returned home late as a child, I would deliberately make some noise to get the dogs barking, and it gave me a sense of security."
Seeing the direction Su Huan pointed, Yu Yue’s mood gradually sank.
By the roadside, there were only a few dozen birch trees frozen to death, the rest connected to the farmlands at the horizon, all covered in heavy snow, rendering everything vast and blank.
No buildings, no villages, and certainly no traces of people.
Even with preparations made for winter, most people had no resistance against the sudden catastrophe of Extreme Cold.
"Su Huan..."
Yu Yue looked at Su Huan with concern.
Su Huan shook his head lightly. A year and a half had passed since the apocalypse broke out, and he was more aware than anyone else of how low the survival rate was for two ordinary middle-aged people in the Extreme Cold.
But at that time, he had just evolved, thinking of ways to guard against the people in the vehicle rebelling every day, trying to extract more resources.
By the time he advanced to Tier Four, it was already too late.
Knowing it was impossible, he had buried the thought of returning home deep down, nearly forgotten in a corner.
But standing here, his heart still couldn’t help but leap.
Energy delved beneath the snow, cautiously distinguishing between the accumulated snow and other substances.
The snow layers trembled, and within a radius of several hundred meters, the snow was enveloped by energy, gradually lifting, like a giant snowman rising, being battered by the wild wind yet never dispersing.
The black ground was revealed, and rows of red-brick houses appeared before the crowd, some iron doors cracked with cold, some roofs dented by the weight of snow, yet in front of Su Huan, a few dozen meters away.
Nothing at all!
No houses, no building remnants, not even a foundation, just a simple open space where even roads and drainage ditches did not extend.
Xiaoba and Yu Yue looked at Su Huan with some confusion, thinking he had gotten the location wrong.
But only Yu Jing’s pupils suddenly contracted.
"Su Huan, is it the one next door?"
Yu Yue asked softly.
Su Huan did not turn his head, his dark eyes compressed into a line, suppressing the overwhelming surge.
Misremembered?
No, impossible, there was no misremembering!
A Tier Four Evolver’s memory was more reliable than a hard drive, there would be no mistakes. Though the plants withered, he remembered every inch here, his family originally had only an eighty-square-meter house, with a small yard in the back. In elementary school, it was heard that they were to be relocated, so they rushed the construction and turned the front warehouse into a small house, with marks on the doorframe hammered out with a lock, specifically recording his height.
The house door was lower than the road, with two cement slabs of different heights spanning the drainage ditch.
The neighbor’s apple tree always hung over the wall, and they didn’t want the fruits, freely letting him pick them. His mother would put the small apples in a pot, steam them with brown sugar, and the soft, sweet smell lingered in the depths of his memory.
How could it not exist?
But the open space in front of him bore traces of having been plowed, and although the surrounding fences had collapsed, thanks to the ice and snow, they were well-preserved. Bamboo, wooden slats, plastic baskets, discarded tires... all sorts of materials were mixed together, something not formed in a day or two; evidently, before the apocalypse, this was a vegetable field!
Even if the old couple had moved away, they wouldn’t have demolished the house, and certainly not so thoroughly, without leaving a single brick or tile!
As if it had never existed.
Su Huan stood deep in memory, yet could not find the slightest trace of his own existence here.
The home clearly being there, yet he could not return to it.
"Whew..."
Another strong gust of wind blew, and the massive suspended snow layer burst open.
Half of the snowflakes danced upward in the wind like white gauze, while the other half flowed on the ground like a silver-white river.
Torrential ice crystals beat against the black shirt like a storm, and a small stone was swept up into a wild dance by the wind, once-supporting-the-world figures so tiny within the snow-grain quicksand, as if they would be swallowed by the snow the next instant.
Invisible vibrations appeared out of thin air, splitting the ice and snow directly ahead to both sides.
Yu Yue clearly felt Su Huan in front of her, yet as if he was very far away, this feeling unsettling her, she instinctively held his hand, her voice carrying an imperceptible tremor, "Let’s keep looking..."
"I might know where your home is."
Yu Jing suddenly spoke from the side.
The eyes of the three turned towards her, Xiaoba purely curious, Yu Yue surprised, while Su Huan’s eyes like a still sea, all the turbulent waves and small ship caught on the crest were frozen in this moment.
"But do you really want to know?"
Yu Jing seriously asked.
Su Huan did not answer, but Yu Jing saw the answer in his eyes, sighed gently, "Then let’s go."
The group turned direction, only now with Yu Jing leading instead of Su Huan.
Returning to Beidaying Square, heading further east, the four walked through the city enveloped in ice and snow. This was still not the city center but was much more prosperous than Su Huan’s "home", with more residential buildings around, and several high-rise apartment complexes to the north.
Yu Jing seemed to be comparing something, stopping occasionally to confirm directions.
Finally, the four stood in a relatively open area.
The snow was lifted again, and two yards came into view.
The yard on the left was smaller, typical of an ordinary household, with a trampoline, a children’s slide, and a willow tree in one corner.
But the sign hanging there shocked Xiaoba, who suddenly turned his head to look at Yu Yue, eyes filled with astonishment and confusion.
