ARK SPIRIT

Clash of the Beast Kings

  • Next Chapter

The killing intent of the Gray Shadow Wolf King spread with the icy winds around it, sharp and heavy with the scent of blood.

Across the stream, the Python King gave off a far darker presence, like poisonous mist slowly settling over the surrounding ground.

Neither beast attacked at once.

Hao Nhien quickly noticed the difference between them.

The Python King remained halfway up the mountainside, its triangular head lowered only slightly toward the stream. It made no attempt to descend or close the distance. It was simply guarding its territory.

If the Gray Shadow Wolf King turned back, there was a good chance the battle would never happen.

But the wolf showed no intention of retreating. It remained at the water’s edge for another moment, its red silver eyes fixed on the forest beyond. Wind churned continuously around its body while its claws dug deep into the stone. Then, instead of withdrawing, it stepped farther into the stream.

Watching through the screen, Hao Nhien became more certain of his earlier suspicion.

The silver-furred wolf he had killed could not have been an ordinary member of the pack. A King intelligent enough to understand territorial boundaries had pursued him all the way here and was now preparing to enter the domain of another King.

The Python King did not appear to care whom the Gray Shadow Wolf King was chasing or why it insisted on crossing the stream. It merely lowered its head, curved its neck, and pressed its tail more firmly against the ground.

The boundary was here.

Cross it, and there would be a price.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King raised one front paw, lightly scored the stone at the bank with its claws, then took another half step toward the opposite side.

The Python King opened its jaws.

Two long curved fangs emerged, and a drop of dark purple venom fell into the stream. The water hissed and began to smoke.

Inside the Cosmic Ark’s Cave Dwelling, Hao Nhien kept his eyes fixed on the viewing screen.

He did not deny the fear in his heart. Two existences powerful enough to rival formidable Foundation Establishment cultivators were confronting each other just outside. A single stray attack could be enough to kill him.

Yet beneath that fear, another feeling had begun to rise.

This was a rare opportunity to observe how beings far stronger than himself used their bodies, innate abilities, and terrain in combat. Hao Nhien focused his intent on the screen, trying to remember every subtle change in the posture of the two Kings.

Then the battle erupted.

The Python King struck the moment the wolf stepped onto its side of the stream.

Its massive triangular head shot down from the slope with a speed completely at odds with its heavy body. Both fangs pierced through the curtain of wind around the Gray Shadow Wolf King, but the wolf tilted aside at the last instant. One fang only grazed its shoulder, leaving deep punctures without fully sinking into the flesh.

Even so, a small amount of venom entered through the wound.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King did not stop.

The instant the serpent’s head passed, its body slipped sideways.

It did not retreat, nor did it meet the attack head on. It simply lowered its center of gravity, dipped one shoulder, and moved outside the strongest line of force.

A claw swept across.

Scales tore from the Python King’s neck, spraying dark green blood across the ground. Wherever the blood touched grass, the leaves curled and darkened.

Hao Nhien held his breath.

That had not been speed alone.

He replayed the exchange in his mind.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King had not tried to move far from the attack. It had only stepped outside the strongest path of force, letting the serpent’s momentum pass beside it before counterattacking while the head had yet to withdraw.

Hao Nhien rose without realizing it.

He placed his right foot half a step to the side, lowered his left shoulder, and leaned according to the movement he had just seen.

No wind appeared.

There was no astonishing burst of speed.

But when he tried a second time, he began to understand how the wolf could change direction so quickly without first cancelling all of its momentum.

The wind did not need to knock down the boulder.

It only needed to find a gap and pass through.

The thought had barely formed when a heavy collision sounded outside.

The Python King swept its tail across the stream bank.

Its body, more than twenty zhang long, carved a massive arc through the area and forced the trees ahead to collapse. Several first rank Gray Shadow Wolves failed to escape in time and were thrown away. Some died on impact, while others tumbled deep into the forest. Even one second rank wolf was struck by the tip of the tail, smashed into a cliff, and lay still for several breaths before managing to rise.

Hao Nhien doubted the sweep had been entirely accidental. The Python King had many directions in which it could have attacked, yet its tail had passed directly through the cluster of wolves behind its opponent.

If his judgment was correct, the strike had not been aimed only at the Gray Shadow Wolf King.

It had deliberately hit the pack as well.

The Wolf King paused for less than a beat.

Then its howl changed.

The wind around its body surged, and its next attacks became far more aggressive. It circled the Python King in short arcs, changing angles again and again before appearing at difficult defensive positions. Each pass of its claws tore away more scales.

The Python King did not try to match that speed. Its enormous body began to coil into broad loops, gradually shrinking the open space around itself. The closer the Gray Shadow Wolf King wanted to get, the more often it had to pass through gaps shaped by the serpent’s body.

On one exchange, the wolf darted between two coils.

The Python King contracted.

The opening vanished.

The wolf was delayed for only half a beat.

That was enough.

The heavy tail came sweeping in and knocked it across several slabs of stone, carving a long groove through the ground. Yet the wolf recovered almost at once.

Hao Nhien watched without blinking.

One used speed to find openings.

The other used its body and the terrain to control those very openings.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King sought to end the battle through rapid, precise attacks.

The Python King was dragging it into a war of attrition.

Two completely different ways of fighting.

Hao Nhien tried the step again.

His right foot shifted aside, his waist turned, and his shoulder lowered. The Tieu Dao Sword followed the movement of his body, not cutting directly but tracing close to the imagined path of an attack passing beside him.

The motion was still rough.

But the principle was becoming clearer.

He did not need to move far from an incoming attack. He only needed to avoid the point where its force was strongest.

Sometimes the difference was only half a step.

Yet that half step could decide life or death.

Outside, the battle grew fiercer.

The Python King bit the wolf again. This time one fang sank much deeper into its shoulder. The Gray Shadow Wolf King twisted free at once, raking a long wound across the serpent’s head as it escaped, but more venom had already entered its body.

At first the effects were subtle. The wolf remained fast and could still tear away entire sections of scale.

Over time, however, Hao Nhien began to notice small changes.

Its bursts became shorter.

Each change of direction took a fraction longer.

The silver wind around its body had also lost some of its sharpness.

The Python King was heavily wounded as well. Large sections of scale around its neck and upper body had been torn apart, one eye had been slashed open, and dark green blood ran along the remaining plates.

But it did not need to win with a single attack.

It only needed to prolong the fight and make every approach cost the wolf a little more than the last.

The longer Hao Nhien watched, the clearer the pattern became.

This was not simply a contest of strength. Each beast was forcing the other to fight in the manner least favorable to it.

Neither side held an absolute advantage.

The only question was which one could endure longer.

As time passed, the battle lost the clean sharpness of its opening exchanges.

There were no longer elegant bursts of speed or perfectly timed counters. Only biting, constriction, evasions, and endurance remained.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King breathed heavily. Blood ran from its shoulder and chest, while one hind leg had begun to drag slightly. The venom dulled the clarity in its red silver eyes, but its claws could still rip through the scales along the serpent’s neck.

The Python King was hardly better. One section of its body had been torn deeply enough to expose flesh beneath the scales. Its tail trembled whenever it tightened around anything, and its injured eye forced it to keep its head tilted to one side.

Hao Nhien stopped practicing.

He simply stood and watched.

At first he had felt excitement at seeing a level of combat far beyond his own. Now that feeling had faded, replaced by awe.

Greater strength did not make battle less brutal.

It only made the price higher.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King charged again.

Its speed had fallen considerably, but the killing intent had not.

It avoided the serpent’s first bite, slipped past the side of its neck, and sank its fangs into an area where the scales had already been torn away.

The Python King coiled immediately.

Once.

Then a second time.

The wolf was trapped between the coils, but its jaws did not release. Its claws kept tearing while dark green blood poured over its head.

The Python King tightened.

The sound of breaking bone reached Hao Nhien through the screen.

It was not loud.

But he heard it clearly.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King’s body convulsed once, then again.

At last, the claws gripping the serpent’s body slowly fell away. Its red silver eyes remained turned toward the far side of the stream until the last trace of light disappeared from them.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King was dead.

The Python King did not loosen its coils immediately. It held the body a little longer, and only after the wolf had gone completely limp did the serpent slowly release it.

Hao Nhien thought the battle was over.

Yet the Python King did not raise its head in victory.

It remained motionless for a long time before finally beginning to crawl back toward the mountainside. Section after section of its heavy body dragged across stone and mud, leaving a trail of dark green blood behind. Wherever the blood fell, thin wisps of smoke rose from the ground.

It moved slowly now.

The overwhelming presence it had shown upon appearing was gone. So was the towering posture that had silenced the entire region. What remained was only the instinct to return to shelter.

Hao Nhien watched.

Part of the Python King disappeared behind the cliff.

Then nearly half of it.

Its pace grew slower and slower.

Eventually, the serpent’s head vanished from view, while the rest of its body remained stretched outside the fissure.

One breath passed.

Then another.

Nothing moved.

Even the tail, which had still been contracting faintly with each effort to crawl, became still against the ground.

A long time passed without change.

The Python King was dead.

Not at the same moment as the Gray Shadow Wolf King.

It had won the battle.

But its wounds, blood loss, and the price of victory dragged it down before it could return to its lair.

The area around the stream gradually fell silent.

The surviving Gray Shadow Wolves had scattered long ago. No howls remained, nor the scrape of claws over stone. Only the wind moved through the broken trees while water slowly began to find its way through the rubble again.

Hao Nhien still did not leave.

He sat down inside the Cave Dwelling, steadied his breathing, and continued watching.

He waited another quarter hour and remained there until the poisonous haze outside had visibly thinned.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King’s corpse did not move.

Neither did the portion of the Python King still visible outside the fissure.

Only then did Hao Nhien rise. Before leaving the Cosmic Ark, he placed a basic antidote pill beneath his tongue, circulated true qi to protect his meridians, and opened the exit.

The outside air rushed in, carrying the mingled smells of blood, poison, and wet earth.

He stepped out slowly.

Even after watching the entire battle through the screen, the sight before him made him stop for several breaths.

The Gray Shadow Wolf King lay beside the stream, its dark gray body streaked with silver now completely still. Deep wounds covered its chest, one shoulder had been darkened by the serpent’s venom, and several ribs had been crushed by the final constriction.

Even in death, its enormous form and the lingering impression of its former power made Hao Nhien instinctively keep his distance.

Across the stream, the Python King’s body stretched out from the fissure. Half had disappeared behind the mountainside, while the rest lay motionless on the ground, black scales shattered in many places and dark green blood pooled beneath it.

Standing amid the devastation, Hao Nhien seemed almost insignificant.

Two Beast Kings.

One had died beside the stream. The other had fallen only a short distance from the safety of its own lair.

In the end, both remained here.

Something gradually changed in Hao Nhien’s gaze.

This was undoubtedly an opportunity beyond anything he could have expected. Yet after witnessing the battle, he could no longer look at the two corpses as simple spoils.

Before he considered taking anything from them, he needed to confirm one thing first.
